May 5 Early AM departure - Great for First Visit to Rome!

     Full Day Comprehensive Rome Tour (8 Hours)

One of our English speaking drivers will pick you up from your accommodation in Rome and take you to see the major attractions in Rome such as: Colosseum (we will have to be at the entrance about 35 minutes before the actual entrance time in order to go through the metal detector check point After having received a full explanation by your driver-guide, and you'll spend in there about 45 minutes on your own), Circus Maximus, Road of Temple, Roman Forum (from the outside), Pantheon, Trevi fountain and Spanish steps.

Then you'll have a break for lunch and afterwards you'll have 2 hours at your disposal to visit Vatican museums, Sistine chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. For this visit we can provide you with a private tour guide, who'll escort you inside helping you to appreciate the best of it, in only 2 hours!

For religious sites knees and shoulder have to be covered. Tip is well accepted by our driver-guides. The order of the sites might change due to crowds situation. In certain occasions the Colosseum will be done starting from 02.00 pm as last site of the day, to avoid crazy crowds in the AM. In this event we will visit the Vatican in the AM. No matter when, there might be some wait at the entrance of the Colosseum due to the metal detector check points even if you have already pre-bought your tickets.

     Tuscany Day Trip: Winery, Cooking Class & San Gimignano -(12 hours)

Soak in the Italian country side as we are driven in our private bus away from Rome's hustle & bustle. We are headed to a family owned and operated winery in Tuscany where we will spend our day. We will take part in a cooking class to learn some of the secrets to amazing Italian food - and we get to eat the fruits of our labor for lunch (included). We will also taste wines with the people that grew the grapes and made the wine themselves. A fabulously educational experience. This is not just any average Italian wine - and you will learn how to recognize that as we taste their pride and joy!

As part of our day we will also have a visit in San Gimignano. You have most likely seen this quaint hilltop town in travel brochures or online as you were dreaming of this very trip! After our fabulous day in the countryside, we will be dropped off at our hotel with memories to be cherished forever,

Scooterama on an  Ape Calessinos

For those that do not want to ride on the back of a scooter even with a personal driver, there is an option! The three wheeled, driver driven 'chariot' awaits!

It is called an Ape Calessinos,  is similar to a  tuk-tuk, and a perfect way for you to partake in this fun-filled tour with out having to ride a scooter.

The Ape Calessinos has a driver and can seat 2 or 3 people.

     2 people = 320 euros  which is $365/2 people or $182.50 each

     3 people = 390 euros  which is $445/3 people or $148.33

TRANSFER TOUR

Join those staying at the Hotel Pensione Barrett on a Transfer TOUR to the Port of Civitavecchia with stops at  Ancient Ostia, Nacropolis de la Banditaccia and the oceanfront Santa Severa Castle! 

This tour will depart the Hotel Pensione Barrett approximately 8:00 AM and make stops at these rarely visited sites usually missed by those rushing to get to the port and board their ship. Enjoy free time to explore each of these interesting sites as we enjoy exploring and meandering our way to our awaiting ship. $99 for 10+ people (price may be slightly higher is less than 10 people)

Ancient Ostia  Founded in the 7th century BC at the mouth of the Tiber River, Ostia was likely Rome’s first colony. While the city flourished for centuries, after the fall of the Empire, the Ostia’s fortunes followed suit, with repeated raids by Muslim pirates finally forcing the inhabitants to abandon the city in the 9th century. The city’s abandoned harbour eventually silted over, which helped protect it against the ravages of time. Today, 10,000 acres have been unearthed, centered around a mile-long main road. Here, visitors will find common homes and public toilets, as well as landmarks like an amphitheatre, a forum for the city’s many corporations, and of course, a bathhouse with exquisite mosaics. The on-site museum showcases some of the many artefacts found here, with the statuary being particular stand out. In the collection are statues from various foreign religions - a testament to Ostia’s relationship with people from all over the known world. We will have 90 mins to explore.

Nacropolis de la Banditaccia  A testament to the Etruscan’s urban planning skills, even their graveyards were expertly mapped. This sprawling complex began 3000 years ago when Etruscan society was just beginning to blossom. These early tombs were just small pits where the ashes of the dead were kept. Over the next 600 years, the city expanded, and the tombs became more sophisticated. They transitioned to build burial mounds, often carved out of stone, and even added streets in the 6th century BC. The most important members of society were interred in rows of square tombs along the necropolis’ two main streets. The entire area has been dedicated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since some of the structures represent types of buildings which no longer exist anywhere else. Some tombs are modelled after Etruscan houses, and their frescoed depictions of daily life is a unique testimony to this vanished culture. We will have approximately 90 mins to explore.

Santa Severa Castle  Built on the foundations of an ancient Roman fort, which itself was built on the site of an even older Etruscan port, this medieval castle offers visitors a bit of history with their beach. The structure seen today dates back to the fourteenth century, but a discerning eye will notice the massive cyclopean masonry at the base of the castle - this is the foundation from the Roman structure. In 1482,ownership was transferred to the Order of the Holy Spirit, and it remained theirs until 1980.Today, the ownership of the monumental complex belongs to the Lazio Region, that has trusted Santa Marinella Town Council to manage it. Rather than offering the tradition castle experience, visitors instead have access to the National Museum Antiquarium of Pyrgi, the Maritime and Ancient Navigation Museum and the Museum of the Rock. We will have 60 mins to explore.

Port of Civitavecchia ooh & aah as you first catch sight of our home-away-from-home for the next week docked in the Port of Civitavecchia. Marvel as you see the Royal Clipper in stark contrast to any other ship in port. It's like she's been there forever and she is Grand Dam of the water! We will arrive in plenty of time (approx. 2:30) to board our ship and get settled prior to the 4:00 all-aboard!

Make the most of your morning in Rome before you take a shuttle out to the port of Civitavecchia. The hour-ish transfer (which Tricia can help you reserve) will provide beautiful views of Italy's countryside and coastline. But do not be surprised when you are completely distracted by the Royal Clipper sitting in port waiting to whisk us away! She grasps the attention of everyone around and she is OURS!

She is regal. She is so inviting. She is a classic beauty. She is elegant but not pretentious. She turns heads every where we go and you will proudly say 'Yes' when locals and other tourists say 'you're on THAT ship'. What a feeling!!

Ponza:  The pastel houses of Ponza Town rise in neat terraced rows from the busy harbor where sleekly groomed yachts and ramshackle fishing boats moor side by side. Happily, there are few tourists here, so it's a delight to wander through the unspoiled town.

Palmarola:  A snorkelling heaven that is part of a group called The Pontine Islands, located off the coast between Rome and Naples. A craggy landscape with pink coral beaches and emerald coves beckons so don't forget your swimsuit and flippers. Totally unique, isolated and stunning.

Sorrento, whose city walls rise straight out of the sea, is located on the lovely Amalfi Coast and overlooks the Bay of Naples. Optional excursions might include taking a trip back in history to Pompeii, where the ashen remains of ancient Romans lie frozen in time.

During the Middle Ages, Amalfi was a powerful republic of 70,000 people, rivalling nearby Ravello. For a sense of Amalfi's medieval glory, wander through the grand Duomo, containing the remains of St. Andrew. In the evening we visit nearby Positano, said to be the most beautiful town in the Mediterranean.

Barreling under full sail through the narrow Strait of Messina past Scylla and Charybdis, where rock and whirlpool almost claimed Ulysses, you arrive in lovely Taormina. Perched on the shoulder of Mt. Etna, Taormina inspired Goethe to say that'It is the greatest work of art and nature.'

Italy's seven volcanic Aeolian Islands, just off the north coast of Sicily, are obviously a place favored by the Gods. In Lipari, climb narrow streets to the medieval castello and enjoy a secluded beach. As Royal Clipper sails past Isola Strómboli, watch the sky for frequent volcanic fireworks.

Sail around Stromboli with the backdrop of it's famous active volcano which has it's last major eruption in April 2009.

During the Middle Ages Gaeta, a coastal city south of Rome, was a fortified settlement, and vibrant port which carried out trade with countries in the eastern Mediterranean. Gaeta is shrouded in history and rich in ancient monuments. Here you will find Monte Orlando Park, a protected area with Roman ruins, Access to Monte Orlando is only on foot or by a shuttle bus during summer months. As you ascend the mountain you will pass the statue of the Madonna and Child which looks out protectively over the beautiful Bay of Gaeta. It is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.
