As part of Aviara Golf Club’s continued focus on sustainability, beginning in April, the course embarked on a project to re-grass our cool season roughs with a warm season Bermuda grass.. Once the project is completed, Aviara will eliminate the need to overseed our golf course again and will be able to provide golfers with a more consistent and better playing conditions year round. With a non-overseeded golf course, we will also be more environmentally friendly with less chemical inputs being applied to the course and reducing our water usage by approximately 20%. 

Maderas Golf Club, located in Poway, Calif., a suburb of San Diego, has been named a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International, a not-for-profit environmental education organization.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf is an award-winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. Audubon International has developed Standard Environmental Management Practices that are generally applicable to all golf courses. These standards form the basis for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf certification guidelines.

“This achievement is the culmination of four years of hard work, community and government agency outreach and partnering with the local Palomar Audubon Society,” said Michael Flickinger, general manager, Maderas Golf Club. “The process of becoming a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary began back in 2012, was nurtured by Kevin Shipley, our former Assistant Superintendent, and brought across the ‘finish line’ by our current Director of Agronomy Patrick Reilly and Equipment Manager Neal Quantrell. Maderas joins an elite group of Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries golf courses located around the world.”

As part of the process of becoming an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the Maderas Golf Club team implemented and documented environmental management practices in the following areas:

• Environmental Planning
• Wildlife and Habitat Management
• Chemical Use Reduction and Safety
• Water Conservation
• Water Quality Management
• Outreach and Education

According to Audubon International, there are currently 902 golf courses around the world approved as Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries.
