Our tour begins with a cup of coffee to take away at the Bourbon market where you will meet your guide and enjoy your surroundings. From here, we will take a walk through the vibrant market, tasting fresh fruits while learning about the agricultural history of the area. We will visit a series of stands, from a coffee, to learn the traditional Costa Rican method of production called “chorreado”, to a local folk medicine stand where we will learn how to heal everything, from a hangover to a broken heart. Coffee and markets play a very important role in the history of Costa Rica and you will understand what they mean for the city and its citizens.

Your visit to the Bourbon market will continue along the local roads that will take you to the Central Market. Seeing the diversity of sites within these markets will help you get to know the country better and its rich history. On this tour, you will use your sense of taste to be more in tune with San José. There is no better place to experience local cuisine than the Central Market, a 120-year-old building filled with typical food and traditional drinks. Here you can taste the local delicacies, learn about the herbs used in popular medicines or simply enjoy a delicious and smooth Costa Rican coffee for the second time in the day. In the end we will visit a special place where Chocolate is made!

You can receive a chocolate workshop with a complete tasting of all cocoa by-products. From the beginning you will briefly know the history of cacao in America, tasting fresh cacao fruit, then roasted seeds, nibs, cacao powder, and ancestral drink. Then we will get to work with the most modern chocolate shop, you will learn how to prepare pure cocoa, to then achieve different concentrations of cocoa in the chocolate paste (70%, 85% and 100%).With these you will make various chocolates with all the local ingredients that we have available and use your creativity! Finally, we will give you the (eco-friendly) materials so that you can pack your own creations and have a perfect memory of your trip to Costa Rica.

Get up close and personal with the nightlife in San Jose, starting with the Central Market, which, in our opinion, is the only way to learn about the city’s food (aside from eating it, which we’ll get to!). Stroll the market with your local guide and get to know the secrets and uses of the roots, herbs, and fruit common in local cuisines, including ingredients that will play a role in your authentic Costa Rican dinner later. The locals say that you can get anything you need at the Central Market, even love potions for attracting a boyfriend or girlfriend…wink.

After the market, we’ll make our way down Central Avenue, enjoying a trip down San Jose’s memory lane, learning about the city’s history and anecdotes, as well as visiting one of the most architecturally beautiful buildings in San Jose, the National Theatre.

From there, our appreciation for San Jose’s historical architecture continues, with a walk through Morazan Park to enjoy the Metallic Building, then on to Spain Park for a fantastic view of the Yellow House (now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

We’ll continue to charming Barrio Amon, one the oldest neighborhoods in San Jose. Designed by Amon Fasileau, a Frenchman who settled in the area, it has become one of the most scenic parts of the city, boasting a rich, architectural history.

We’ll be spending the rest of the evening at a favorite local restaurant that specializes in wine and gourmet food. This cosy establishment offers the best in Costa Rican cuisine, a unique space that offers art, culture and history as well as fine dining. The view from the terrace is like looking out onto an open-air museum, where 1930s architecture fuses with modern builds which infuses this delightful neighbourhood its eclectic charm.
