Prepare yourself to experience the full beauty of the land and people of Ghana, West Africa. Beginning in the Greater Accra Region of the country, this tour continues on to explore the rich culture and incredible food of three additional Regions of the country; the Eastern, Central and Volta Regions. Our travelers are able to witness first-hand the rapid and expansive growth this historic country is undergoing. In addition to touring the gem of West Africa, our Sankofa US travelers return home with a renewed sense of pride and purpose.

The Yellow Fever and COVID vaccinations are the only 2 shots required for entry into Gnana. You can get the required inoculation at a "travel clinic" near you.

Sankofa US contracts with Allianz Travel Insurance, however, travel insurance is at your own expense.

Travel for 2-3 hours to Cape Coast to explore the Slave Dungeon.

Check in to the Coconut Grove Beach Hotel

Drive along the coast through several fishing villages and coconut lined beaches. Visit the Cape Coast Castle which was originally started by the Swedes in 1652.

The Cape Coast Castle served as the headquarters and seat of the British colonial government until 1877

We will also visit Elmina Castle erected by the Portuguese in 1482, one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade.

Kakum Canopy Walk

Village of Sumaan (bring school supplies and other donated items for the service project)

Go on a morning walk of the “Kuntan Trail” with its countless medicinal trees. Climb the mountain to experience the “Canopy Walkway” suspended 100 feet from the forest ground for a panoramic view of the flora and fauna of the remaining vestiges of the rain forest.

Visit the village of Saaman to tour the traditional farming village and gain insights on their educational system.

Visit to the Slave River (Assin Manso)

Dinner at Mabel's Table (American Soul Food Cuisine)

Travel to Assin Manso the “Slave River” which was the last rest stop for the captives on their “one-way” trek to the slave dungeons along the Coast.

Afternoon Options: Relax, meditate, or enjoy the amenities at the Coconut Grove Beach Resort (horseback riding, golf, mini golf, swimming at the pool, etc.) or an afternoon session with Bishop Davis.

Our journey to Ghana and Rwanda in partnership with Sankofa and WeTravel was a uniquely enriching experience. We dove deep into African History of the Gold Coast slave trade and the Rwandan Genocide. We met local people who are building new redemptive and caring communities. We stayed in very nice accommodations and our in country transportation was wonderful. More focus on the accomplishments of the African diaspora in spite of slavery would have been an encouraging redemptive note on which to end. Seeing the reconciliation village and meeting survivors and perpetrators and hearing their testimonies of forgiveness was priceless. Michael N. Allen

I had a great time and enjoyed the food people and Ghana trip. I would love to go back again. We lost a day in Country due to weather which was a bummer. Thankfully we did not have to carry bags and we had the excellent service staff and Bishop made this trip extra special by taking care of our outing while in Country.

This was the most amazing trip that I have ever taken in my life! It was full of both history and so much fun. The people that I met are new friends that I will have for a lifetime. I am so grateful for this life-changing experience that Sankofa US provided from the beginning to the end of the trip. The staff was so helpful and nurturing, the adventures were great, and the opportunities to see multiple cities in Ghana were scheduled perfectly. This is a trip that you don't want to miss. It is very affordable and the two weeks we spent there did not feel like enough, because everything was so amazing!
