Elaine Ritchel | Lead Guide

Elaine fell in love with art at the age of five. She still remembers learning about Monet and van Gogh and being struck by the rich and vibrant colors they used. It's this same fascination and love for art that she brings to her tours.

Elaine has a master's degree in art history and has worked as a gallery teacher and art museum educator in the US and abroad. She specializes in discussion-based teaching and creates meaningful, art-centered experiences that promote visual literacy, inspire personal awareness, and deepen connections with the world around us. After a three-year stint in Croatia, where she worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb and the Croatian Association of Artists, Elaine returned to New Mexico to launch Santa Fe Art Tours.

Elaine is also an arts, culture, and travel writer. (Here’s her online portfolio, if you’re curious.)

When she's not gathering people together around great works of art, Elaine enjoys exploring the desert landscapes of northern New Mexico and relaxing at her adobe casita with a good book.

Writing this review for my daughter who travelled with her French class. The planning and organization of this trip was exceptional. Our teen daughter had a terrific time and enjoyed all of the guided expeditions. Payment and communication emails for planning were so helpful, making this a painless experience. I know our teachers had a great time as well. Thank you for helping them plan and execute a wonderful experience for all!

As first timers to Barcelona, this workshop and tour combo proved to be an excellent introduction to this wonderful city. It was so much fun to meet and create with fellow mosaic enthusiasts in a city filled with countless examples of the art. The schedule was nicely planned to accomodate the workshop, touring, and free time. Our guide David, and tour escort Paquita were informative and engaging companions on visits to the must see sights. Livia's workshop was such a warm and delightful experience. Her studio was a dream to be in for the week, surrounded by her endless treasure of tiles and materials. The time flew by as we all worked on our "we made these!" projects/souvenirs. The Hotel Astoria was a comfortable home away from home, conveniently within walking distance of bakeries, restaurants, pharmacies and supermarkets. The front desk, dining, and housekeeping staff were very friendly, professional, and efficient. They answered our questions, provided recommendations, and made sure to address any needs or concerns. A million thanks to Bonnie and Rene for putting this all together, we had a blast!

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip - it was well thought out and planned; a lovely group; the mosaic workshop was wonderful; the touring was well-organized - a really good mix of culture, history, and architecture/art, and not over-tiring. Delighted to have been part of this group!

Awesome experience! We learned so much about making mosaics and then toured areas to see beautiful mosaics in Barcelona. Astoria Hotel was very comfortable and clean. Breakfasts were delicious. Great to meet so many interesting people on the tour.

This tour consistently went above and beyond my expectations. The organizers were constantly adding events to the itinerary that enhanced my understanding of the people and culture of Catalonia. To give a few examples: 1) We stayed in a beautiful, historic hotel that featured a museum dedicated to the works of Catalan graphic artist Ricard Opisso. Could there be a better headquarters for a tour dedicated to Modernista art? 2) As the tour progressed, activities kept being added to the original itinerary such as a human tower competition and a Modernista Festival. These activities gave us opportunities to experience the vibrant streetlife of Barcelona. 3) Livia, our instructor in the art of Trencadis, was generous with her time and helped us learn about how mosaics fit into the traditions of Catalonia. She played classic jazz and World music while we worked, and everybody bonded over it. The “drink” that she offered us at the end of the tour magically turned into a full-scale tapas lunch! 4) Our escort David Brurruezo was tremendously knowledgeable and fun. Our guide, Paquita Vazquez, was indominable, scampering up and down stairs in the blazing sun and successfully challenging the bureaucrats who denied our lunch reservation. 5) Bonnie was a great co-instructor and helped us navigate the confusing COVID regulations that governed our re-entry into the U.S. 6) The hotel breakfasts were great, and the ambience was superb, marble, spiral staircase, grand piano – I felt like I was on a movie set!
