A Tahitian Outrigger Va’a Expedition

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime 10-day expedition through the spectacular Sea of Cortez, combining traditional Tahitian outrigger paddling, marine wildlife encounters, and the comfort of the M/V Valentina as your floating expedition vessel. In partnership with the Tahitian Outrigger Association, this extraordinary journey celebrates the spirit of Polynesian voyaging, teamwork, and a shared connection to the ocean.

Over seven of the ten days will be spent paddling, approximately six hours each day aboard a 6-person traditional 44-foot Tahitian outrigger canoe, exploring the remarkable coastline and islands between Loreto and La Paz. With the Valentina accompanying the expedition, enjoy the support, comfort, and onboard hospitality of a dedicated liveaboard vessel throughout your journey.

When not paddling, discover the extraordinary marine world of Baja California Sur through activities inspired by Panterra's signature marine expeditions. Swim with whale sharks, encounter magnificent blue whales, and observe the remarkable diversity of migratory marine life that gathers in these nutrient-rich waters.

Ten days. Seven days of paddling. One unforgettable journey down the Sea of Cortez.

The M/V Valentina is a spacious 38-metre (130-ft) liveaboard vessel accommodating up to 20 guests in 10 air-conditioned cabins, all conveniently located on the main deck. Each cabin features a private en-suite bathroom with a separate shower booth, individual air-conditioning controls, storage, wardrobe, dresser, hairdryer, shampoo and body soap.

Cabin Configurations

• 7 Deluxe Twin Cabins: Spacious, wide bunk beds.

• 2 Deluxe Double Plus Cabins: One double bed and one single bed, in a non-bunk configuration.

• 1 Valentina Double Cabin: One double bed, ideal for couples.

Onboard Comfort & Dining

Guests can enjoy an air-conditioned indoor dining room, a spacious upper-deck relaxation area, and a partially covered sun deck and solarium—perfect for relaxing, enjoying the scenery or stargazing.

Meals & Beverages

Full-board dining features chef-prepared cuisine inspired by Mexican, European and Asian flavours. Included beverages are water, soft drinks, coffee, tea, local draft beer and one glass of wine with dinner.

SHIP INFORMATION

Day 1 — April 8, 2028 | Arrive in Loreto

Arrive in Loreto, where our driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the Hotel Oasis.

Settle into your surroundings and join us this evening for a special traditional Mexican “Welcome to Baja” Dinner, hosted by Panterra. It is the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow paddlers and expedition team before our journey begins.

Day 2 | Loreto — Board the M/V Valentina

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and gather for our expedition safety briefing and orientation. Meet the paddling team, learn about the 40-foot Tahitian outrigger canoe, and prepare for the days ahead.

In the afternoon, board the M/V Valentina, your comfortable floating expedition vessel for the journey south. Settle into your cabin, become familiar with the boat, and enjoy our first evening together at sea as we anchor for the night.

Days 3–8 | Six Days of Paddling & Marine Exploration

Each morning begins with a light pre-paddle breakfast of cereals, yogurt, cottage cheese, and fresh fruit before heading out onto the water.

Our paddling days are designed around approximately six hours on the water, generally divided into three two-hour paddling sessions. We anticipate beginning between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. and returning to the Valentina around 1:00–2:00 p.m., depending on sea conditions, tides, and wildlife activity.

This is an extraordinary time of year in the Sea of Cortez. As we travel south, we may encounter blue whales and other migratory marine animals, along with feeding whales, mobula rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and an abundance of marine life thriving in these nutrient-rich waters.

No two days will be alike. Weather, tides, sea conditions, and wildlife movements will help shape our daily adventures. When we are not paddling, we may explore a remote mangrove alive with birdlife, visit a historic fishing village where generations have lived in close relationship with the sea, or visit a rare sea lion colony, weather permitting, where Guadalupe fur seals can be observed alongside California sea lions.

Where conditions and local conservation activities permit, we may also participate in a sea turtle monitoring program or explore the shoreline as the nesting season begins.

Each day offers the opportunity to experience the full rhythm of the marine environment—from the early morning feeding activity to the changing wildlife and conditions throughout the day. With the Valentina as our home base, we can explore, paddle, observe, and return to the comfort of the ship each afternoon.

Day 8 | Disembark the M/V Valentina — La Paz

After our final morning of exploration, return to the Valentina and enjoy lunch before preparing to disembark at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Our driver will transfer you to the historic Hotel Catedral in the heart of La Paz, where you will enjoy a relaxing two-night stay and time to reflect on the extraordinary journey from Loreto to La Paz.

Day 9 | Swim with Whale Sharks

Today offers another unforgettable encounter with the marine life of the Sea of Cortez.

Enjoy an approximately three-hour guided snorkeling experience with whale sharks, one of the world's largest fish and a remarkable seasonal visitor to the waters of La Paz.

The remainder of the day is free to relax, explore La Paz, or simply enjoy the waterfront and historic centre.

Day 10 | Departure

After breakfast, check out of the Hotel Catedral.

Our drivers will transfer you to either La Paz International Airport or Los Cabos International Airport for your onward journey.
