About this trip

Sedona Spring Yoga Retreat

Locale:

Sedona, Arizona

Dates:

April 17th - 21st, 2024

Retreat to Sedona next spring.

Create space next April to explore, immerse, and return home.

Spend 5 days in the mountains and desert of Sedona enjoying daily yoga practices, yoga workshops, guided meditations, hiking and time out in nature, and space to slow down, relax, and restore. We’ll take a deep dive into our yoga and meditation practices, and take time and create space to break down and explore the practice and all its' subtleties, nuances, energetics, and mechanics, as well as the natural beauty surrounding us.

Take time for yourself to nourish the body, mind, and spirit in one of the most naturally stunning and grounding corners of Arizona and the world. Sedona is a place and space that nourishes and enlivens the spirit and heart, and leaves one feeling joyful, connected, and refreshed.

Join us next April 17th-21st, 2024 as we take time to return to and celebrate our true nature.

We will sit and ground with guided and silent Vipassana meditations, get creative with a little brushstroke of art and painting, nourish and explore with 1-2 daily alignment-based yoga practices/workshops, and take time to slow down and relax as we soak up the beauty and energy of the desert around us.

We'll return home feeling enlivened, strong, joyful, nourished, and restored and carry the thread of heart-awakened loving kindness and awareness home with us to our own families and communities.

We will enjoy a relaxing stay and nature bath at the Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona, and enjoy red rock and mountain views from the expansive property and resort. We’ll balance our days and time on retreat with practice, hiking, meditation, as well as ample free time to unwind, rest, and explore on your own if wished.

Daily breakfast at the resort and a couple of dinners will be included within the retreat and we will get out and about for a couple of dinners as well to explore of few of the local favorites and great restaurants in town.

More About Sedona:

There is a place, unlike anywhere else on Earth. Where you can walk among ancient red rocks. Where crystal streams double as fountains of youth. A place where your spirit will soar, and your heart will race. Where a simple stroll can turn into an adventure of a lifetime. Where you can unplug from life as you know it, and connect to what’s really important. That place is Sedona, Arizona.

Delve deep into this vast landscape defined by a unique collection of soaring stone monoliths in vibrant reddish hues. Explore slashing canyons, evergreen forests and quiet oases.

Despite the small town charm of Sedona, red rock country is surprisingly large. Over 1.8 million acres (7,300 square km) of national forest land encircle the community. Trails and jeep roads branch out in all directions. So even frequent visitors rarely have a chance to do more than scratch the surface.

Yet there’s so much more to see if you only know where to look. A wild country of mountains and mesas and sprawling valleys is spread beneath blue skies and an endless supply of sunshine. This is a land held sacred by Native Americans and where cowboys once rode. Red stone formations create a haunting skyline found nowhere else in the world. This is where Arizona keeps the Old West. And this is where a New West has evolved, as a haven for artists, a center of spiritual health and enlightenment, and an epic playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

Renowned as a place of wellness, Sedona restores body and spirit. Many visitors come to experience the famed vortex sites that are conducive to meditation and self-exploration. Whether the energy originates from the vortex or just the staggering natural beauty and clean forest air perfumed by pine and cypress, this is a healthy place to be. Especially when additional time is spent at any of the soothing spas offering treatments designed to restore harmony and balance.

Everyone can chase his or her passions amid Sedona’s breathtaking grandeur. Hikers can traverse the broad back of Schuerman Mountain, an extinct volcanic mound. Follow a beautiful ridgeline down to the cool waters of Oak Creek on the Huckaby Trail, circle a distinctive stone tower and watch it transform into the famous “Three Fingers” formation on Chimney Rock Loop or explore the fragrant forests of Woods Canyon.

Mountain bikers can follow the swooping curves of the Girdner Trail down to Dry Creek, zoom across the red rock ledges of the Mescal Trail or cruise through hillsides shaggy with manzanita on Deadman’s Pass. Experienced bikers can catch some air on Llama Trail or make the steep climb on the Ridge Trail providing splendid views of Red Rock Crossing. Yet there are plenty of routes for all skill levels.

Enjoy areas that are easily missed. Picnic among the orchards of Jordan Historical Park and visit an informative museum while there. Savor a sunset from the high perch of the Merry-Go-Round, as the western horizon blazes with color and soft light melts down the cliffs like warm honey. Stargaze at a glittering canopy of celestial bodies from the base of Doe Mountain with unobstructed wraparound views of the heavens.

Feel your spirit soar at the Chapel of the Holy Cross, where all faiths come to marvel at the views and architecture of the little church rising between two stone pillars. Explore the ancient pueblo of Honanki Heritage Site, an elaborate cliff dwelling nestled against red cliffs and surrounded by mysterious petroglyphs, symbols etched into the rocks.

One reason the historic buildings and heritage sites are so well preserved, along with the unspoiled natural beauty is due to Sedona’s commitment to sustainability. Every year more steps are taken to make Sedona an even greener community. Recycling is increased, restaurants serve more locally sourced food and many of them have gone straw-free, bicycle pathways are added, significant strides are made for funding trail maintenance, visitors volunteer to assist the great efforts to clean Oak Creek, and water conservation steps are implemented. Everyone wants to protect this piece of paradise for future generations.

No matter the season, Sedona has a way of pulling people outdoors. Each time of year seems especially vivid, an idyllic version of what we want that season to be. At an elevation of 4,500 feet (1,370 m), Sedona enjoys deliciously mild summers with comfortable mornings and evenings and yes, a bit of heat in the afternoon—perfect weather for swimming holes, canyon picnics or a creekside massage. Winters have just enough nip in the air to enhance a cup of evening cocoa. The rare snowfall is almost always confined to the shoulders of the mighty formations, adding a decorative frosting that makes the perfect setting for a family photo.

Even amid the epic scope of the landscape, there’s an unexpected intimacy to Sedona. Surrounded by the wide-open spaces is a very real and welcoming community. Long beloved by travelers, Sedona is also blessed with a broad hospitality infrastructure of world-class resorts, intimate B&B's, spas, restaurants, shops and dozens of galleries filled with the work of renowned artists.

Along with the numerous outdoor locations art galleries are located in creative centers such as the Village of Oak Creek, Uptown Sedona and Gallery Row.  You will enjoy every artistic medium including whimsical kinetic sculptures, contemporary jewelry, fine art paintings, large format photography, stained glass, ceramics, woodcarvings and many more. Native American art and influence are also a prominent part of the scene with handcrafted silver and turquoise jewelry, pottery, carved kachinas, woven baskets, intricate Navajo rugs and Western bronzes on display.

There are retreats and vacations and then there are retreats and vacations in the Most Beautiful Place on Earth. There will always be more to see and do. I encourage you to return back to Sedona as often as you like and see that you will discover more beauty and magic each and every visit.

Yoga:

Together we’ll enjoy a variety of styles and dynamic practices.

We will be practicing once some days, and twice on some days and will be explore breath work, precise alignment and energetics of postures, the blueprint postures, meditation, reading and seeing bodies, the 8 limbs of yoga and living our yoga off the mat, restoratives, and more.

We will begin most days with a morning practice and meet back on the mat in the afternoon for a workshop and asana lab to dive into and break down the asanas and practice in greater depth.

We’ll flow, workshop, and restore!

Meditation:

We will enjoy guided meditation and will explore a variety styles of meditation including mindful meditation, silent meditation, and Vipassana meditation also known as insight meditation. Within this style of Vipassana meditation we will explore a variety of methods including breath meditation, and heart meditations including a compassion meditation and a metta or living kindness meditation.

We will talk about the basics of meditation, finding a comfortable seat, and the roots of mindfulness.

Hiking:

We will be getting out for 2-3 hikes while in Sedona together to further immerse in the exquisite and dynamic beauty of the desert and mountains surrounding us.

Please plan on some uphill and incline hiking as well as more mellow trails as some of Sedona’s hikes go up up up for those exquisite views and vistas, as well as mud and hiking amidst the desert floors red dirt.

Plan on wearing shoes and clothing appropriate for desert and mountainous hiking and be aware that the red dirt can stain at times so please plan accordingly and bring some clothing and hiking shoes you do not care about getting dirty, muddy if we get rain, or stained. Also great to bring a hiking day pack, 1-2 reusable water bottles or a camelpak, extra energy -rich snacks for hiking, a good hat or two, layers to cover up from the sun, reef-safe sunscreen, hiking socks and shoes, and anything you may want for hiking and the desert sun.

This trip was so great!! I had the pleasure of attending this trip in the past and couldn't wait to attend again. things have only gotten better since I last went. All of the accommodations were great, close to shops and events, and the activities are well thought out and things I would not have thought of myself. The paddle along the cliff sides is breathtaking, and the VIP experience at Cova d'en Xoroi is a once in a lifetime experience. i wouldn't hesitate to attend more Trips with Mary Susan.

Thank you, Mary for the experience of a lifetime! Mary was very prepared for any and all circumstances during our many adventures, most of which I can personally say gave me the assurance and comfort to have the best day ever on our excursions. Mary provided all dietary accommodations offered at each food venue, gave valuable insights on local customs and celebrations, personally vetted and obtained trusting relationships with all activity guides, prioritized safety protocols, and prepared a backup plan for all the weather interruptions on the trip. More importantly, at each major point in the trip she was conscious of each person’s needs for well being and rest. I personally could not have had a successful boating excursion without her peppermint oil and her guidance on how to position oneself on the boat. I also appreciated when, after seeing our state of being after a full day, she offered a lovely and deeply thoughtful meditation instead of her personalized yoga class (which I can attest gives invaluable insight into improving foundational yoga poses). I want to note that her yoga practice is not strictly abiding, and she values the allowance and space to move in a way that suits each body and mind. With no stone unturned, she offered a wide array of accessible yoga and meditation resources after the trip with thoughtful detail via email, and shared amazing photos that we could all view on all devices. Everyday offered something new and exciting, as she allowed space on the itinerary to offer some fun evening activities based on special events. We were in awe of Barcelona and Menorca for its beauty and its people. I’m grateful for Mary’s nurturing and knowledgeable approach to all her activities, as well as the friendships formed with each lovely woman on the trip. If you want countless opportunities for something your soul can smile about, I would go on one of her adventures.
