About your trip

A 6-night, moderate hiking escape through Slovakia’s High Tatras

If you’re ready to spend a full week discovering the wild beauty of Slovakia’s High Tatras, this 6-night adventure offers the perfect blend of freedom, challenge, and breathtaking scenery.

Designed for hikers with some experience and a good level of fitness, this self-guided getaway lets you explore deeper valleys, higher passes, and more iconic viewpoints — all at your own pace.

Based in the mountain village of Starý Smokovec, you’ll have easy access to the region’s most rewarding trails. From shimmering alpine lakes to panoramic saddles and remote mountain huts, each day invites you into a different corner of the national park. Expect longer hikes, more elevation, and the kind of scenery that stays with you long after the trip ends.

We take care of the essentials — your accommodation, route suggestions, trail notes, transport logistics, and local guidance — so you can focus on the hiking. With a Tatry Card included, you’ll enjoy unlimited rides on the Tatra mountain trains, making it simple to reach the trailheads and return after big days in the hills.

This escape is ideal for active travellers who want a more complete Tatra experience without the constraints of a guided group. You choose your pace, set your own rhythm, and enjoy the mountains on your terms — but with expert support always available if you need it.

Across six nights, you’ll walk some of the Tatras’ most memorable routes: waterfalls, glacial cirques, ridgelines, and high-mountain huts all feature in this itinerary. There’s also time to rest or explore the local villages, cafés, and viewpoints on your non-hiking day.

Whether you’re craving a week of meaningful mountain time, looking to build on a shorter visit, or simply seeking a fresh adventure in one of Europe’s most dramatic national parks, this moderate self-guided getaway delivers a rich, rewarding, and flexible Tatra experience.

Arrival

Day 2

Day 2 image

Deepest Lake of Tatras

Begin your walk from one of the High Tatras’ most charming lakeside resorts, following a gentle path that winds through tall spruce forests and along a peaceful valley floor. We will take a 40 minute mountain train to the start of our hike.

The trail gradually becomes more rugged as the landscape opens up, revealing dramatic peaks and the wide glacial basin ahead. Along the way you’ll reach a welcoming mountain lodge — a perfect spot to pause for coffee, enjoy a warm lunch, or simply take in the scenery before continuing deeper into the valley.

From here the route climbs steadily toward a beautiful high-altitude tarn, the largest and most impressive of its kind in the Slovak Tatras. Nestled in a cirque of steep cliffs and dramatic rock walls, the lake sits in a truly spectacular setting, with crystal-clear water and sweeping views in every direction. It’s a rewarding goal and a wonderful place to rest before returning the same way.

After the hike, you can either finish your day at the lower lodge, where you’ll find a small train station for an easy journey back, or retrace your steps all the way to your starting point if you’d like time to explore the lakeside village again.

Distance: 17.8 km
Duration: 7-8 hours
Ascent: 900 m
Descent: 900 m

Waterfalls and Lakes

Begin today’s walk from the same lakeside village where yesterday’s hike began. The route starts gently, following a forested path that soon leads you into a narrow valley filled with the sound of rushing water.

As you climb higher, the trail becomes rockier and the scenery more dramatic, eventually bringing you to a beautiful cascade tucked beneath towering cliffs. It’s an impressive spot to pause, take photos, or enjoy a short break as you watch the water spill down the mountainside.

From here, you can choose to continue further up the valley on a steeper, more rugged path for even bigger views — or simply return to the main trail and carry on toward a peaceful mountain lake nestled among quiet woodland. This second part of the walk is much gentler, offering a welcome contrast to the earlier climb as the path winds through fragrant pines and open clearings before reaching the calm waters of the lake.

After spending time at this serene spot, follow the easy trail back through the forest to the lakeside village, where you can relax by the water, enjoy a late lunch, or browse the local cafés before returning to your base.

First part of the hike:

  • Distance: 10.4 km

  • Duration: 4-5 hours

  • Ascent: 441 m

  • Descent: 441 m

Second part of the hike:

  • Distance: 9.4 km

  • Duration: 4 hours

  • Ascent: 300 m

  • Descent: 300 m

Rest Day - Leisure Day

Today is yours to enjoy at whatever pace feels right. After several days on the trails, this is the perfect opportunity to slow things down, explore the area, or simply rest and take in the mountain atmosphere. You might choose to linger in the village, wander between cafés, or take a gentle stroll along one of the many forest paths nearby.

If you’re craving something different, you could spend part of the day discovering a nearby historic town, known for its charming old streets, pretty squares, and relaxed local feel. It’s also home to a warm-water spa complex — an ideal place to unwind tired legs with soothing pools, saunas, and mountain views.

For those who want to stay active, we can arrange a guided tour or even another guided hike into one of the neighbouring national parks. Whether you’re curious about local wildlife, culture, or simply want to go deeper into the landscape with an expert, this can be a wonderful way to enrich your stay.

However you choose to spend it, this day is all about flexibility — resting, exploring, or adding a little adventure to your week in the Tatras.

Day 5

From Forest Falls to Mountain Views

Begin today’s walk directly from the village — no trains or transport needed. A short uphill path brings you quickly into the forest, where the sound of rushing water soon takes over. This route follows a series of beautiful cascades and mountain streams, crossing sturdy wooden bridges and winding between moss-covered rocks as the valley rises gently above the treeline.

Partway up, you’ll reach a cozy mountain lodge tucked into the forest. It’s an ideal place for a quick coffee before continuing toward a wide, open plateau known for its panoramic views and alpine atmosphere. Those who prefer to take it easy can ride the funicular up to this point instead and start the hike from higher ground.

From here, the trail leads deeper into one of the Tatras’ most dramatic valleys. You’ll follow a steady, well-marked route toward a remote lodge set against steep rock walls and soaring peaks — a wonderful destination for lunch or a well-earned rest before turning back.

If you’re feeling strong and want an extra challenge, you can continue higher into the mountains toward another hut perched in a spectacular cirque. This extension is steeper and more demanding, but those who make the climb are rewarded with incredible views and a true high-mountain experience.

After your visit, return the same way, descending gradually back through the valley and into the forest, where the path leads you comfortably back to the village.

Standard route:

  • Distance: 11.4 km

  • Duration: 5-6 hours

  • Ascent: 575 m

  • Descent: 575 m

Extended route (higher into the valley):

  • Distance: 18.2 km

  • Duration: 8 hours

  • Ascent: 1,085 m

  • Descent: 999 m

Emerald Waters, Mountain Valleys & Optional Cable Car Views

Today’s walk takes you into one of the most picturesque corners of the High Tatras. The trail leads through a peaceful valley framed by steep granite walls, gradually opening towards a stunning mountain lake known for its deep green colour and crystal-clear water. It’s a beautiful spot to pause, take in the alpine scenery, and soak up the quiet atmosphere of the surrounding peaks.

After spending time by the lake and having lunch at the mountain hut, you can either return the same way or extend your day with a visit to nearby Tatranská Lomnica, where an optional cable car ride offers panoramic views across the mountains and valleys below. Return to Starý Smokovec for your final evening in the Tatras.

Standard / Moderate option:

  • Distance: 21 km (you can cut 6km by taking a bus/taxi to the start of the hike instead of walking)

  • Duration: 7 hours

  • Ascent: 650 m

  • Descent: 650 m

Extended route (higher into the valley):

  • Distance: 19.9 km

  • Duration: 8-9 hours

  • Descent: 290 m
