Tips for New Campers

  • Camping orientation can be found at our troop website
  • Check In
    • Please be patient with check in.  This is youth led and they are learning from this experience
    • Springtime brings lots of new faces and it takes some time for youth and adults to get into a groove
    • It may feel chaotic, but don’t worry, they will get it figured out.
    • Plenty of experienced adults will be there for you to ask your questions to while the youth get organized
    • Driver and passenger assignments will be done at the church.
      • It’s possible we may need additional drivers to help, even from those who are not camping.  We won’t know until we get through the check in process
  • Equipment Reminders
    • Don’t forget to label all your gear
    • Dress for the weather
      • Dress in layers
      • Jackets, hats and gloves are highly recommended from early Fall through late Spring
      • Always bring rain gear
    • Every attendee should bring a “mess kit” (eating gear-plate, bowl, cup, spoon) for meals.
    • Adults are encouraged to bring a coffee cup
    • Field Uniform (aka Class A – Tan uniform) is not needed for most campouts.  We will let you know when it is needed
    • Wear Class B Scout clothes if you have them (troop shirts, pack shirts, etc.) – if you don’t have any, that’s fine too…but keep it Scout appropriate
    • Adults should bring folding chairs so they have a comfortable place to sit
    • Packing list is on our troop website
  • Tent Buddies
    • Scouts should plan on having a tent buddy.  Some exceptions occasionally made for older Scouts
    • Only 2 Scouts per tent
    • Tent buddies must be the same gender and within a 2 year age difference (except for youth siblings)
    • Scouts cannot tent with adults; not even parents
    • It’s best to secure a tent buddy prior to the campout, but we will make sure everyone has a buddy
    • Always bring a tent if they can.  This way if their tent buddy forgets his or something changes, they are ready for the campout
  • New Scout Notes
    • First time campers (Scouts) will want to make sure they are ready to “present themselves ready for a campout”.  This will be done at the campsite
    • New Scouts have requirements to setup a tent and sleep in it in order to get through some early rank advancement.  Even when we have cabins available, new Scouts are encouraged to sleep in a tent 1 night
    • Bring your Scout handbook in a zip loc bag so it has a chance at staying out of the elements
    • Requirements will be signed off while at the camp when we do advancement activities
