Following breakfast at the hotel, we will depart on the last leg of our journey to Door County. Upon our arrival in Sturgeon Bay, time will be available to explore and have lunch on our own. Our touring will then begin at the Door County Maritime Museum to uncover the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes and get an up-close look at the John Purves tugboat. Authentic and glorious in her details, this vintage 1919 tug has been refinished and restored for viewing the engine room, galley, and cabins. Dinner tonight is a unique experience that can only be found in Door County – a traditional fish boil (subject to availability) that is a favorite meal of residents and tourists alike! What began as an economical way to feed large, hungry hoards of lumberjacks and fishermen has become an integral part of the Door County experience. We’ll watch locally caught fish boil on an open fire in an outdoor, community-style kitchen, and when the master boiler yells “boil over,” flames will shoot into the air, and it will be just about time to eat! After our fiery spectacle of a dinner, we will check in to our hotel for the next two nights and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Our day begins with breakfast before we board an old-time trolley to see the best of Door County and listen to our trolley driver’s entertaining and informative narration. A stop will be made at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse for the chance to learn about the keepers who manned the light from 1868-1926. Up next is a local winery for some delicious samples followed by the bluffs at Peninsula State Park. Lunch is included at a local restaurant, and then our trolley will take us to a roadside market to browse the selection of locally made jams and other Door County specialties. We’ll cap off our day at the Peninsula Players Theatre for a live performance under the stars along the serene shores of Green Bay (subject to 2023 schedule). This is America’s oldest resident summer theater, having begun simply with “two planks and a passion” eighty-six years ago.

After breakfast we’ll say goodbye to Door County and venture south through Wisconsin to Galena, IL. Galena is the former home of Ulysses S. Grant and a mecca of small-town shopping. Galena's Main Street is known as the “Helluva Half Mile” with its more than 125 shops and restaurants. From candy and ice cream shops to fashion boutiques, art galleries, and antiques, this 1800s street boasts original buildings and absolutely no big-box brands. The diversity of goods and experiences found along this half mile is amazing. In addition to the spectacular shopping, Galena’s history is rich and the landscapes are stunning, meaning there’s something for everyone to explore during our time here! We’ll then make the short drive across the river to Dubuque, IA, to settle into our hotel for the evening and freshen up for a wonderful dinner as a group.
