Somewhere in the Indian Ocean, 1800 km from Africa’s eastern shore, or 1000 km from Madagascar’s northern tip, lay a group of more than 115 granite & coral islands, the Seychelles Islands.
Stunning & chaste, beautiful boulder-strewn beaches, thriving coral reefs, virgin jungles, and UNESCO-listed nature reserves, are some of the many attractions of this archipelago. Almost half their total land area is protected, and many of the islands & atolls are contained within marine sanctuaries. Beach connoisseurs will find one of the planet’s most picturesque stretches of sand here. Do you remember those beautiful, stunning-blue-skies with turquoise-water, beach postcards you have seen?
That’s where we’re headed!
From our starting point at Mahé Island, we ferry up to La Digue Island, just 10.1 km² in area. During evenings we will head to one of the more isolated beaches, and beautiful ones indeed: Anse Gaulette, Anse Grosse Roche or Anse Banane beaches. Two nights – for the sky – with the mighty eastern Indian Oceanillimitable in the fore direction.
Well, it’s an astronomy tour, so we’ve crafted a surprise for you. We’ve chartered a luxury catamaran boat to sail on the 3rd night into further waters around the nearby islands of Grande Soeur, Petite Soeur, Félicité, andMarianne. Now you would be truly away from any human being and would be lying down above the water of the great Indian Ocean!
Each participant will learn, observe, record/log and navigate through the skies on 3 dark nights using their own binocular. Situated just 4o below the Equator, we will be treated with equal hemispheres of the night sky, granting us views of the treasures of southern skies like clusters & nebulae, along with the staggering, dense, Milky Way band, as well as galaxy-infested regions of the northern sky.
Join Skyward with AstronAmar for this unforgettable starry Seychellois experience!
