Travel Tips for Spain in August

For Barcelona, Valencia, and Mallorca

August is one of the most vibrant and energetic times to visit Spain, with long sunny days, lively outdoor dining, beach culture, and late-night energy throughout the country. It is also one of the warmest and busiest months of the year, so planning ahead and pacing yourself will help you enjoy the experience even more.

Weather & What to Expect

  • Expect hot temperatures, especially midday

  • Average daytime temperatures range from 85–98°F (29–37°C)

  • Coastal humidity can make it feel warmer

  • Sunsets are late, often around 9:00 PM

  • Many locals rest during the hottest hours of the afternoon

Pace Yourself

Spain runs on a later schedule than many travelers are used to.

  • Breakfast tends to be light

  • Lunch is often between 1:30–3:30 PM

  • Dinner commonly begins around 8:00–10:00 PM

  • Many shops close temporarily in the afternoon for siesta hours

Do not feel pressured to pack your days too full. Slowing down and enjoying long meals, evening walks, and relaxed beach time is part of the experience.

Stay Hydrated

The summer heat can be intense, especially when sightseeing.

  • Carry a reusable water bottle daily

  • Electrolyte packets can be very helpful

  • Wear sunscreen consistently

  • Hats and sunglasses are strongly recommended

Dress Code

Spain is stylish but relaxed in summer.

  • Lightweight linen and breathable fabrics work best

  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential

  • People often dress slightly more polished for dinner and nightlife

  • Beachwear is appropriate at the beach but not while walking through cities or restaurants

Safety Tips

Spain is generally very safe, but pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas.

  • Keep valuables zipped and secure

  • Use a crossbody bag instead of a backpack when possible

  • Be extra mindful in crowded areas, markets, and public transportation

  • Avoid placing phones or wallets on restaurant tables

Transportation Tips

  • High-speed trains in Spain are comfortable and efficient

  • Taxis and rideshares are widely available

  • In Mallorca, many areas are walkable, but taxis can become limited late at night in peak summer season

  • Keep some euros on hand for small shops or taxis

Barcelona Tips

Barcelona is energetic, artistic, and very walkable.

  • Pre-book major attractions whenever possible

  • The Gothic Quarter is best explored slowly on foot

  • Watch belongings carefully around Las Ramblas and crowded tourist areas

  • Sunset along the beach or rooftop terraces is especially beautiful

Valencia Tips

Valencia offers a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than Barcelona.

  • Try authentic Valencian paella where it originated

  • The City of Arts and Sciences is worth visiting both day and night

  • Beaches are wide, sandy, and less crowded than some other Spanish coastal areas

Mallorca Tips

Mallorca is known for stunning coastlines, beach clubs, mountain villages, and crystal-clear water.

  • Beach clubs and restaurants book up quickly in August

  • Bring water shoes if visiting rocky coves

  • Boat days can get very sunny — bring extra sunscreen and hydration

  • Mallorca evenings are beautiful for seaside dinners and walks

Eclipse Day Tips | August 12, 2026

The Total Solar Eclipse will bring increased tourism and excitement throughout Spain and the Balearic Islands.

  • Expect heavier traffic and crowds that day

  • Keep eclipse glasses with you and use only approved viewing glasses

  • Have your phone/camera charged ahead of time

  • Enjoy the moment beyond photos — totality lasts only a short time and is an unforgettable experience

Helpful Extras to Bring

  • Portable phone charger

  • Portable fan

  • Lightweight scarf or sweater for flights/air conditioning

  • Waterproof pouch for boat or beach days

  • Motion sickness medication if joining catamaran excursions

Cultural Notes

  • A few basic Spanish phrases go a long way

  • Tipping is appreciated but generally smaller than in the U.S.

  • Meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly

  • Spaniards are often out late, especially in summer — cities remain lively well into the evening

Most importantly, leave space for spontaneity. Some of the best moments in Spain happen during unplanned conversations, sunset strolls, long dinners, and simply soaking in the atmosphere.

Morning & Early Afternoon – Free Time to Unwind
Spend your final hours however you choose—whether relaxing onsite or venturing out for one last stroll. Suggested activities include:

  • Lounging by the resort pool or beach

  • Wandering the charming streets of nearby Peguera

  • Visiting scenic spots like Cala Fornells or Cala del Pi

  • Treating yourself to an optional service at the resort’s Oasis Spa

Depart Mallorca at any time today. For international travelers, we recommend flying through Madrid, where you can connect to your onward flight or extend your adventure with a night or two in Spain’s vibrant capital city.

Private Airport Transfers
A private transfer to Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) will be arranged based on your flight schedule. Your retreat leader will confirm the details to ensure a smooth and stress-free departure.

✦ Extend Your Journey: Highlights of Madrid
If you’re continuing on to Madrid, here are a few must-see experiences:

  • The Prado Museum – Discover iconic works by Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco.

  • Royal Palace of Madrid – Tour the stunning interiors and manicured gardens of the royal residence.

  • El Retiro Park – Enjoy a peaceful walk through Madrid’s beloved green oasis.

  • Mercado de San Miguel – Indulge in gourmet tapas and local delicacies.

  • Puerta del Sol & Plaza Mayor – Experience the energy of the city’s bustling heart.
