About this trip

Celebrate a disconnect from all that distracts in the day to day. Immerse in nature in an unique off-grid experience. Our program is designed to support students in an authentic natural learning environment.

The program will be facilitated from our base camp, deep in the mountainous region of the Kootenay Boundary region.

Students will wake to the sounds so playful robins and squirrels, practice under old growth cedars, study creek side, and unwind by evening campfires under the stars.

The program is designed to follow the following elements :

Traditional and modern ethics of yoga

      Meditation

      Anatomy

      Yoga Philosophy

      Business

      Nutrition

      Development Of Authentic Practice

      Asanas

Our base team will be providing you with a prepared and comfortable home camp. We provide the tents / bedding / mattress / supplies. You simply arrive with your personal belongings and your mat / block / strap.

The team will be providing you with three vegetarian meals per day. Meals are designed with your nutrition in mind - healthy, fresh, energy sourced.

Our days will be diverse! It's not all on the mat. It's not all in the books. The program is intended to be immersive and inspiring. We will move, engage in fulfilling discussions, support one another, and celebrate all that nature has to offer - uninterrupted.

      What To Expect

You can anticipate four classes via zoom in advance of your arrival. In these zoom classes we will cover some of the lessons, to allow us more time together in relaxation while on site.

You can expect simple meals. All of the meals are made with careful consideration to your nutrition and fueling your body in an energy sustaining way. You can plan to enjoy plenty of hearty salads, vegetable rich soups, roasted vegetable medleys, and protein rich greens.

Fantastic sunny weather! BUT, wit that said, there is always the possibility of rain or cool evenings. We will not have access to a laundry service - please pack accordingly. Those who chill easily should pack an extra blanket.

Expect a stunning background to your day. Mountains, green surrounds, creeks in the distance and peace. Our yoga space is natural. Prepare for practicing on a surface that is not as consistently flat as your home studio!

A supportive peer group! And we appreciate that from you too! Arriving with a sense of adventure and dedication to a remarkable experience is really appreciated. Our aim is to form a positive and uplifting learning space out in the forest!

      What About Arriving?

Students will all meet in Grand Forks BC on the start date at 10 am. Then, collectively we will travel to the site and get settled in. Those who are flying, should plan to fly into Kelowna or Castlegar the day before the program starts. If you are needing assistance with a shuttle service. Please let us know so we can assist in coordination.

I wasn't able to attend this retreat due to illness. The team was very nice in all their communications, but wasn't willing to make any accommodation - travel insurance would not cover my situation but I didn't want to risk getting anyone else on the retreat sick. While I understand that there are costs associated with putting on a retreat, so it makes sense they wouldn't be able to offer a full refund, even a small credit towards a future teacher training would have been appreciated. The entire situation made me feel like Kootenay Yoga School cared more about money than spreading the joy of teaching yoga or practicing kindness.

If I could give Kootenay Yoga School 10 stars I would. Everything was so beautifully curated - the staff, housing, food, transportation, communication, people - I couldn't have dreamt up a better team and environment. Our teacher Michelle was absolutely dynamite. Her curriculum was exactly what I was looking for in a YTT Program. Lisa, Kandice, the grounds staff, the kitchen staff...every single person who made this trip run like a well-oiled machine deserves the world and all the recognition. If you're thinking about taking a trip to Isla Mujeres, think no further. Just do it. It was a trip of a lifetime.

A wonderful experience in Joshua Tree. The weather graced us with January rain storms, multiple rainbows, strong winds, and beautiful cool starry nights. The food was amazing, and plentiful. The group of ladies were wonderful, and our instructor, Marcia, was phenomenal. The accommodations were comfortable. I would have liked to have known more about the space itself prior to arrival, like the shared outhouse(with a real toilet <not port-o-potty>) the one shared indoor shower, and the sleeping arrangements (glamping trailers and a bunkhouse) Sitting on the floor of the shala for daily learning was painful for the first few days, I’d recommend bringing a small camping chair with you. And snacks if you get peckish. I brought protein powder with me and was glad to have it as the menu is mostly vegan and veggie dominant (and incredibly delicious) but not a lot of protein dense foods. Addy seriously needs to make a cookbook, the food was a huge highlight of the experience. Bring warmer clothes than you think if coming in a cooler month. Having a car would be helpful if you want to get out, you’re not walking distance to town (also a big perk the silence is incredible), and if you want to go to the park on your day off for a hike. Would recommend this experience to friends and others looking for a full experience in the desert, immersed in nature and good vibes. I learned a lot and am so happy to have attended. Thank you!

An amazing experience! Met so many beautiful people. Learned a TON, both about yoga and myself! Our instructor Michelle is fantastic, she loves what she does and it shows. The rest of the Kootenay team is also superb they always go above and beyond for the students. Thank you Kootenay!

Beautiful experience. The best part was the tight-knit community and Michele's spiritual yet modern yoga approach. I went over the December holiday and the Kootenay team did a wonderful job making Dec 25 festive, while still giving us the benefits of a peaceful, healing journey away from home. It was definitely a well-balanced training + holiday experience. (We got daily time off to explore and there were no hard & fast rules around tech usage or chores & cleaning, so it's a moderate approach to the yogic lifestyle. Wonderful for folks looking to learn and have a mini holiday. May not be suitable for advanced practitioners.) Many of the lovely people I met at the training were in their late 20s-40s+ and are adventurous travelers taking a break from or reimagining what life can look like away from the 9-5 grind. For those looking for a deeply spiritual, healing experience, I would not say this is the exact place for that. For those looking to understand yoga, deepen their yoga practice, feel confident teaching, and connect with other travelers, then this a good place for you. Just FYI participants who were able to *snag* a single room had a more comfortable living experience than those sharing rooms. Isla Mujeres is a lovely little island with a balance of quiet vistas and more touristy shops and restaurants. The yoga villa is a 5 mins walk from a really lovely, small beach and dock area - very grateful for access to an ocean swim every day! Food is delicious and bountiful, and it was a really wonderful 2-weeks to get into a routine of exercise, healthy eating, meditation, and self-care. I feel prepared with the fundamentals of yoga and yoga teaching, and inspired to seek out more training or self-learning to continue deepening my practice.

I have completed the 200-hour yoga teacher training with Kootenay Yoga School at their beautiful location in Isla Mujeres Mexico (a small Island in the Caribbean Sea). Where to start? Sign up and be totally comfortable that u’ll have the best experience. The location is in a jungle vibe, modest, clean & organized. The food is vegetarian, organic, super healthy prepared by a talented young lady - Addy the owner’s daughter, who works hard to make sure every dietary requirement is met. Lisa, the owner, is a professional woman who is very meticulous and follows up with every detail, making the experience worthy. The whole team, from Kandice, Silvia, to the kitchen staff are very helpful and kind. Stephania (Steff) our teacher made every lesson interesting and enjoyable, the fire and energy in her, the knowledge she shared in Anatomy, was outstanding as if a doctor is explaining. The course is intensive, however, well divided throughout the days. Steff is also flexible and no matter how tired one is, we would put the effort to be punctual in her classes and enjoy the information shared. I was lucky to be with amazing people from different countries and cultures, we clicked and had so much fun together. Yes, it’s hot and humid and u need mosquito repellent. It’s not that bad at all. The beach is 5’ walk from the school and it’s breathtaking. So is Punta Sur most easternmost point of Mexico and u get to see numerous iguanas in that region too. I felt so safe in the school and the whole island. 💜🧘🏻‍♀️
