Shark Encounters

Galapagos Islands

About this trip

8 Days / 7  Nights

Take a journey through all of the most frequented shark sites around the island of Santa Cruz. At  these sites you will be diving with the legendary schools of scalloped hammerheads, the menacing black tipped reef sharks, the docile white tipped reef sharks and the elusive Galapagos sharks. For those of you not so keen on the sharp toothed variety of underwater life, you can’t go to these sites without bumping into the local sea lions who always want to meet the newcomers, be surrounded by schools of reef fish, glide by the turtles cleaning stations and be amazed by the schools of eagle rays, golden rays, mobula rays and the majestic manta. There is something for everyone!

Itinerary

Day 1
Baltra

Transfer from Baltra airport to hotel with Highland Visit.

This visit consists of 3 sites: El Chato, Lava tunnels and Los Gemelos.

El Chato Tortoise Reserve is near Santa Rosa, approx 19km from Puerto Ayora. This is one of the only places where you can observe the ancient creatures up close in the wild. They look old, they smell old and they  even sound old when they suck in their necks and heads and let out a hiss of air, like an old leather cushion. The reserve is also a great  place to see the short eared owls, Darwin`s finches, yellow warblers and  paint billed crakes. After you return to the current century you will  be taken to the lava tubes, where you can walk more than 1km underground. They were formed by the solidifying of the outside skin of molten lava flow. When the lava flow ceased, the molten lava inside the flow kept moving, emptying out of the solidified skin thus leaving tunnels. Lastly a visit to Las Gemelos, the twin craters that are actually sink holes surrounded by Scalesia forest. Vermillion flycatchers and often seen here, as well as short eared owls on occasion. It is a beautiful place to take in the greenery of Galapagos and walk along the small paths around the craters to spot some of the  bird life. At the conclusion of the tour you will be transported back to Puerto Ayora and your hotel.

Please come to our office in the evening at 6pm to try on your equipment for the following day and meet your guides.

I cannot say enough positive things about Academy Bay Divers staff and Alice. Alice goes out of her way to assist/help in any way. Their dive boat is a roomy and fitted for divers, and very comfortable. On the boat the dive masters help the divers gear up and put your fins on. I would dive with Academy Bay again. They are the best dive shop in Puerto Ayora Santa Cruz. Kudos to Alice for helping make our trip a great memory. Ralph and Lisa

I can't say enough about Alice and Academy Bay Diving. This was a fairly complicated trip to organize with 12 people coming from 4 different US cities over the course of 2 days with travel delays. The itinerary Alice suggested for scuba and land tours was ideal to see a wide range of wildlife in a busy, but well managed schedule. The guides she appointed were excellent and the dive leaders were outstanding. The logistics were flawless from start to finish. From the moment we arrived we had a guide to get us to each and every activity including to and from the airport. Taxis or buses were waiting for us at our doorstep for each tour, and Alice herself met us at different points along the way to make sure we checked in at the hotel, to point us in the right direction at the pier or make sure we knew what was coming next. It was a situation where I didn't have to worry about not being familiar with the local customs or requirements because Alice or someone she chose was there to help every step of the way without feeling herded from one stop to the next. There was plenty of free time to do what we pleased and explore the town, but the guides showed up exactly when we needed them. Academy Bay made this trip feel simple with the flawless logistics and outstanding guidance.

Alice had everything planned for us to a tee from the moment we stepped off the plane and it was wonderful! The dive masters and crew had everything organized and ran all six days of diving like a finely tuned machine. They even rinsed and dried the scuba equipment we brought with us. I would definitely dive with them again and I highly recommend them to anyone!
