Cusco - Km 104 - Machu Picchu

Your journey begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 4:00 a.m. (exact time based on location), followed by a private transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station. For guests staying in the Sacred Valley or near Ollantaytambo, pickup is scheduled around 5:30 a.m. for added convenience.

For an optimized experience, we highly recommend spending the night prior in Ollantaytambo. This strategic choice reduces travel time by approximately 1.5 hours from Cusco and allows for a more relaxed start. Travelers joining a Sacred Valley tour the day before can request drop-off in Ollantaytambo, where our team will coordinate seamless pickup from your hotel.

The journey from Cusco to Ollantaytambo takes approximately 90 minutes. From there, you will board an early train and travel alongside the Urubamba River, arriving at Km 104 (Chachabamba), the gateway to the Short Inca Trail, set within the lush cloud forest. Upon arrival, you will proceed directly to the control point—please ensure you carry your original passport for entry.

Your experience is elevated from the very beginning, the adventure starts with a guided visit to the archaeological site of Chachabamba, where our expert guide will provide insightful context into Inca history and the significance of Machu Picchu.

From here, you will embark on a remarkable 7-hour trek along the original Inca Trail. The first segment consists of a steady ascent of approximately four hours, leading to Wiñay Wayna—one of the most impressive and well-preserved archaeological sites along the route. Surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes, you will explore this extraordinary site before enjoying a box lunch, locally sourced ingredients.

Refreshed and re-energized, the journey continues toward the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you will witness your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu—an unforgettable moment. Arrival is scheduled between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., when visitor traffic has significantly decreased, offering a more exclusive and serene experience.

You will then descend for approximately one hour to the Machu Picchu viewpoints, where you will arrive in the late afternoon. At this time of day, the citadel offers a rare sense of tranquility. You will explore via Circuit 1, ideal for capturing iconic photographs with minimal crowds.

Following the visit, a short bus ride will take you to Aguas Calientes, where you will enjoy dinner at one of the town’s top-rated restaurants. The evening concludes with an overnight stay in a carefully selected 3-star hotel, offering a prime location, private bathroom, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and scenic views—ensuring comfort and quality at every stage of your journey.

Explore Machu Picchu - Back to Cusco

On the final day, we rise early for the defining moment of the journey: an immersive visit to Machu Picchu, the iconic Lost City of the Incas. After breakfast at the hotel, we board the first buses to the citadel, arriving as dawn light reveals its breathtaking scale. On clear mornings, the sunrise over Machu Picchu delivers a truly unforgettable first impression.

Your expert guide will lead a 2–3 hour, in-depth exploration via Circuit 3, highlighting the site’s most significant temples, ceremonial spaces, royal enclosures, and agricultural terraces—bringing to life the history, engineering, and cultural legacy of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the guided experience, you’ll have free time to capture exceptional photos or, for those seeking more adventure, independently hike either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (advance reservations required).

Optional experience: Descend on foot to Aguas Calientes along the original Hiram Bingham trail. En route, you may visit the Machu Picchu Museum and butterfly sanctuary while enjoying unique perspectives of the surrounding landscape.

Following the visit, we return by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have time for lunch, to explore the town, and browse local markets.
