      Itinerary of the Short Inca Trail

      Day 1: Arrival at Cusco (April 8th)
      We will collect you from the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Cusco.

       Day 2: Cusco - Chinchero - Moray - Salineras  - Ollantaytambo  (April 9th)
      Pick up at 8:00 am from your hotel in Cusco, explore the center of Cusco, San Pedro Market, then drive to visit the "Land of Weavers" in Chinchero, explore the circular ruins of Moray and the amazing Salt ponds of Salineras. After lunch in Urubamba, we will drive to Ollantaytambo to explore the town and the archaeological site. Spend the night in Ollantaytambo

       Day 3: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Machu Picchu  (April 10th)
      7:00 am Pick up after breakfast in the hotel and take the first trains to Km 104, we hike for about 7 to 8 hours to Machu Picchu. We arrive in the afternoon through the Sungate, which gives us a unique chance to see Machu Picchu almost empty. Later we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes.

       Day 4: Machu Picchu - Cusco (April 11th)
      Wake up early in the hotel and take the early buses to Machu Picchu, this time we will explore the citadel in a 3-hour guided tour, after exploring Machu Picchu you will take the Panoramic train back to Cusco arriving back to Cusco around 6.30 pm.

       Day 5: Rainbow Mountain (April 12th)
      Early pick up from your hotel in Cusco (5.00 am) and drive for 3 hours to the trailhead, where your chef will prepare a picnic breakfast. Then, you will start ascending to the top of Rainbow Mountain and visit Red Valley. After a picnic lunch with amazing views of the Mountains, we will return to Cusco.

       Day 6: Humantay Lake  (April 13th)
      We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4.30 am and drive you for 3.5 hours to Soraypamapa. After breakfast below the Humantay and Salkantay Mountain, you will start hiking for 2 hours to the Humantay lake; then it's a similar time back the same route to lunch. In the afternoon, drive back to Cusco.

       Day 7: Transfer Out

      Great trip thank you. We saw the numerous interesting Inca sites and an alpaca farm, with a very nice buffet lunch. The day was packed with content. Particular thanks to our guide Katya, whose enthusiasm and knowledge seemed to be boundless. She is proud of her beautiful country and heritage, and rightly so.       The company did an outstanding job getting our group through 4 days of hiking. The breakfast, lunch, and dinners they served were unexpectedly very good and plentiful. Sleeping inside the tents was made comfortable with foam and air mattresses along with sleeping bags and pillows. Unfortunately the government is in charge of the bathroom facilities which were pretty bad, they only had flour toilets and in some cases they were quite dirty, not the fault of the company. A lot of the companies that use the Inka trail don't properly pasteurized the drinking water many hikers get diarrhea so bring anti-diarrhea medicine and consider bringing something that can filter the bacteria our of the drinking water they provide. I think I was the only one in my group who got diarrhea, fortunately I brought medicine with me and I started using my filter once it started. Fortunately it only lasted two days and it wasn't bad. The floors of one bathroom facility was covered in diarrhea by another company's group by the time we got there, that was pretty bad. There was only one cold shower facility available at the end of the third day hiking, however, all the bathrooms at the camping sites have large sinks which you can use to at least wash your hair and face. I packed baby wipes, which worked well at cleaning the rest of me and that I used to when I went #2. We saw so many archeological sites along the 4 days hiking, it was amazing. I would definitely do this hike again but would use filter/straw that removes bacteria from the drinking water they provide. Also it's very important to be in Cusco (or high altitude town) at least 3 days before the hike to get acclimated to the altitude. Taking one aspirin (325 mg) and one ginkgo biloba (120 mg) per day starting one week before you arrive at high altitudes towns like Cusco (11,000 ft above sea level) and throughout your stay will help prevent altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, etc). Bring rain gear and use the plastic poncho they provide. My rain gear didn't work that well but the poncho did.
