Some walks will be led by expert guides and some by Cheryl, or Graham and adjusted to suit all the needs of the group. Whether you are keen to hike or just want to explore this region and its hidden beauty, your guide will ensure this trip is perfect for you.
As well as immersing yourself in the Algarve’s culture by visiting the idyllic towns, beautiful architecture and enjoying its delicious local cuisine, you can explore its rich history including a visit to the remnants of the famous 1834 Sant’Ana battle, as well as many other historic sights such as the Necropolis of Pedreirinha, dating back to the Early Middle Ages.

The Historical Battle Trail - a beautiful 14km route following the River Funcho, passing the ‘secret pond’, before reaching the iconic ‘church hill’. On the hill, a large picture-tiled plaque depicts the historic 1834 Sant’Ana battle. This shows the army positions and the site where they erected a field hospital. This important historic artefact is sure to teach you about the noteworthy Portuguese history in this region, immersing you in Portuguese culture. Enjoy a delightful picnic prepared by Cheryl and Graham, in the hill top, while taking in the countryside vistas.

Funcho View Walk - Immerse yourself in the natural beauty and marvel at the wonders of nature as you embark on a walk through the captivating Funcho reservoir. Traverse the low-lying hills, observe buzzing beehives, admire beautiful heather, and discover charming ruins along the way. With uninterrupted views and stunning scenic backgrounds, this 12km hike promises to leave you in awe. Enjoy a delightful picnic prepared by Cheryl and Graham, nestled under the pine trees, while taking in the panoramic views over the river. If needed, the walk can be adjusted to suit your fitness ability.
Archaeological Circuit of Vilarinha – a journey from prehistory to the middle ages. The 8.5km walking route is rich in archaeological remains, proving to be a journey in time from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The route is also near the reproduction centre for the endangered Iberian lynx that is on the verge of extinction in Algarve.
On this route you’ll be visiting the Necropolis of Pedreirinha, dating back to the Early Middle Ages. This beautiful piece of Portugal’s history is composed of two adult and one children’s sepulchres. Enjoy a typical Portuguese lunch in the heart of the Algarve Countryside.

Our home-from-home, The River House, is the perfect retreat for nature enthusiasts seeking modern comfort, privacy, and peace. This renovated 100-year-old farmhouse riverside property boasts an infinity swimming pool, 5 large bedrooms, and can accommodate up to 10 people with the option of single or double beds.
Check-in from 16h00. Guests are requested to arrive before 21h00; otherwise, arrival should be scheduled for the following morning.
Check-out will be after the 09h00 breakfast.

Your swimming costume to enjoy the pool and swimming shoes for wild swimming or canoeing in the dam. I strongly advise wearing swimming shoes for all river activities.
Please Note: Check water levels in advance for optimal water sport experiences during dry periods in the Algarve.
If you not taking advantage of the transfer service from the Albufeira Bus Station then for those arriving by train, disembark at Messines-Alte train station and choose a quick 5-minute taxi ride to reach the villa.
If you're flying into Faro airport, you have two options: either take the train to Messines-Alte and select a 5-minute taxi ride to the villa or opt for a 45-minute airport taxi transfer directly to the villa.

The weather can significantly vary year on year, making it quite unpredictable. Although the expected rainfall in the Algarve in May is minimal, in the event of rain, we will assess the scheduled walking paths and opt for alternative routes less prone to mud. We'll pick you up from the agreed-upon location or, if you've opted for a different route, we'll warmly welcome you at the riverside villa. Take your time settling into your accommodation, surrounded by peace and tranquillity.
Join us for welcome drinks at 18h30 on the waterfront deck, offering a chance to meet your walking group and relish the sunset. Weather permitting, dinner will be served outdoors, featuring a wholesome vegetarian meal thoughtfully prepared by your hosts, Graham and Cheryl. After dinner, savour a cheese platter with port beneath the carob trees.
Later, retreat to your beautiful rooms to unwind before the first full day of your Algarve walking holiday.
