About this trip

Join Ilaria, founder of Her Wild Adventures, and Tatra Escapes for an unforgettable 5-night / 6-day hiking adventure in the heart of Slovakia. This challenging, centre-based holiday is designed for keen hikers looking to push themselves while discovering some of the country's most spectacular mountain landscapes.

Over the course of the trip, you'll summit or cross three of Slovakia's most iconic mountain routes: Rysy, the highest mountain in Poland and one of the most celebrated hikes in the High Tatras; Bystrá lávka, an exhilarating high-alpine ridge crossing featuring chains and spectacular views at the heart of the High Tatras; and the legendary Kriváň, Slovakia's national mountain and a powerful symbol of the country's heritage. Each hike offers a unique mountain experience, from glacial lakes and rugged granite peaks to airy mountain passes and unforgettable summit panoramas.

Each hike offers a unique experience, from alpine lakes and rugged granite ridges to sweeping mountain panoramas and unforgettable summit views.

To balance the challenge, the itinerary also includes a well-earned leisure day. Whether you choose to unwind in the thermal baths, enjoy a cable car ride, indulge in a traditional beer spa experience or simply soak up the local atmosphere over coffee, this day provides the perfect opportunity to recharge before the final adventure.

More than just a hiking holiday, this journey embraces Ilaria's courage-centred approach to adventure, encouraging you to step outside your comfort zone while being supported every step of the way. This is a physically demanding holiday. It is designed for experienced hikers with a high level of fitness who are comfortable completing long mountain days with significant ascents and descents on steep, rocky terrain. No technical climbing experience is required; however, some routes include exposed mountain paths, short sections with fixed chains and easy scrambling. You also have to be ok with heights to attend the holiday.

Please read the day-by-day itinerary before booking, as it provides the walking duration, elevation gain, terrain and difficulty rating for each hike. If you are unsure whether this trip is suitable for your fitness level or hiking experience, please contact us before booking—we'll be happy to discuss whether it's the right adventure for you.

Rysy Hike

After breakfast, we set off for one of the highlights of the trip – the ascent of Rysy (2,501m), the highest peak in Poland and one of the most iconic mountains in the High Tatras. Approaching from the Slovak side, today's hike follows a spectacular alpine trail through glacial valleys, past crystal-clear mountain lakes and into increasingly dramatic high-mountain scenery.

As we gain altitude, the route becomes more challenging, with sections assisted by fixed chains and metal footholds to help negotiate steeper terrain. There are also a few easy scrambling sections, making this an exciting and rewarding mountain adventure. Your guides will be on hand throughout to offer support and ensure everyone moves safely and confidently along the route.

Reaching the summit is a truly unforgettable achievement, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across both Slovakia and Poland. After taking time to celebrate, enjoy the scenery and capture a few photographs, we begin our descent, retracing our steps back through the stunning alpine landscape.

This is the most challenging hike of the trip, requiring a very good level of fitness, sure-footedness and a head for heights. Along the way, we'll stop at one of the traditional mountain huts for a well-earned lunch before completing our return to the valley.

Hike details:
Distance: 21km | Duration: 8–9 hours | Ascent/Descent: 1,200m

Bystra Lavka Hike - over the ridge

After breakfast, we set off for one of the High Tatras' most exciting mountain adventures – the Bystrá lávka (2,300m) crossing. Beginning and ending at Štrbské Pleso, today's circular hike takes us deep into the heart of the mountains, passing glacial lakes, dramatic alpine valleys and some of the most spectacular scenery in the national park.

The trail gradually climbs through the beautiful Mlynická Valley, following mountain streams and passing the impressive Skok Waterfall, one of the High Tatras' most photographed waterfalls. Beyond the waterfall, the landscape opens into a breathtaking alpine world of granite peaks and crystal-clear glacial tarns. Throughout the day, we'll pass around nine mountain lakes, each offering a different perspective of this remarkable mountain landscape.

As we approach Bystrá lávka, the terrain becomes steeper and more technical, with sections equipped with fixed chains to assist the ascent and descent. While no previous scrambling experience is required, a good head for heights and confident footing are essential.

Crossing the pass is a real highlight of the day, rewarding us with magnificent views across the surrounding peaks and valleys before we begin our descent through the equally beautiful Furkotská Valley. The return route offers a completely different perspective of the High Tatras, making this one of the region's finest circular hikes.

Please have your own lunch ready as there are no mountain huts along the way, only towards the end of the hike.

This is a challenging alpine hike, combining breathtaking scenery with a rewarding mountain pass crossing that is sure to be one of the highlights of the trip.

Hike details:
Distance: 16km | Duration: 7–8 hours | Ascent: 990m | Descent: 917m

Krivan Peak

After breakfast, we set off for the final challenge of the trip – the ascent of Kriváň (2,494m), Slovakia's national mountain and one of the country's most iconic peaks. Rising proudly above the western High Tatras, Kriváň has long been regarded as a symbol of Slovak identity and offers one of the most rewarding summit experiences in the region.

Today's route begins through peaceful mountain forests before climbing steadily above the treeline into a dramatic alpine landscape. As the ascent continues, the terrain becomes steeper and rockier, requiring a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. Every step is rewarded with increasingly spectacular views across the High Tatras and the surrounding valleys.

Reaching the summit is a memorable achievement, with breathtaking 360-degree panoramas providing the perfect finale to your Slovak mountain adventure. After taking time to celebrate, enjoy the views and capture a few photographs, we'll begin our descent back to the trailhead, reflecting on an incredible week of hiking and shared experiences.

This is a demanding hike, but one that perfectly rounds off the trip with a true sense of accomplishment.

Hike details:
Distance: 12km | Duration: 7–8 hours | Ascent/Descent: 1,355m

Tatra Escapes
Most of our trips are concentrated around Tatra Mountains and surrounding national parks (Slovakia has 9 of them!). Tatra Mountains are known as the smallest alpine mountains in Europe which are situated in the north of the country, also shared with Poland. Slovakia is a perfect holiday destination for adventure seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, mountain and nature lovers. Slovakian national parks are a reflection of true paradise for hikers and walkers, and make an ideal destination for wellness retreats, too!
