About this trip

Dr. Dolores Battle invites you to join her in Guatemala for a journey beyond compare. Engage in meaningful interaction and collaboration with speech-language, pathology & audiology counterparts to focus on the greatest challenges faced in the provision of services as well as other topics of interest. As you journey across Guatemala, you'll develop an understanding of issues related to providing culturally appropriate, sustainable, collaborative, community-based rehabilitation services. This journey is especially unique as we have partnered with a social enterprise business, Ninos de Guatemala who invest all their profits in the education of over 500 underserved children in Guatemala. Your participation directly supports their mission and you will have an opportunity to visit with the faculty, parents and students at one of the schools. Take part in many hands-on activities including a Guatemalan cooking class, volcano hiking, and visiting archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization. This journey combines the perfect blend of cultural immersion, support of local schools and an introduction to challenges faced with providing care for people with speech-language pathology & audiology concerns from childhood and beyond.

Wow, where to begin? Thanks to all who helped plan our amazing journey! I fell in love with Scotland; it's history and respect for the past truly won my heart. The people were very friendly and the food was fantastic- even the haggis, which I had with my "traditional Scottish breakfast" every morning. Our guide Edward was a font of information which was effusively shared throughout or 4 day sojourn; he was a sweetheart. Edinburgh Castle was wonderful as was Sterling. Loch Ness was a treat for the eyes with a glimpse of the Highlands as we traveled on to Oban. I enjoyed our distillery tours, both the education and the tastings. Inveraray Castle was wonderful as well with it's mix of old and more modern rooms. The stroll through the gardens seemed to take one back 500 years; the beauty of the the blooming azaleas and rhododendrons will remain a favorite memory for years. Ireland was beautiful as well with it's rolling green countryside, sheep and hedgerows. The highpoints for me were the Rock of Cashel and the time spent in Killarney National Park and the Gap of Dunloe; despite the rain, the boat ride and Jaunty cart ride were amazingly beautiful and a real taste of old Ireland. While we had a few timing issues, the overall trip was great and our accommodations were above board. I really enjoyed staying in the castle and older hotels like in Oban. We had a very busy trip but we saw so many wonderful things! I do wish we would have had more time to just stay a day and more thoroughly enjoy some of the areas. The Nanda gals were extremely accommodating and willing to meet all our needs and requests both before and during our journey. Kudos to Nicola and Debra! I would be very happy to work with them again! Thanks again to all who helped make my dream come true. God bless.

This was an educational, detailed trip about the history of medicine and nursing. I enjoyed the in depth knowledge of the local tour guides. The staff was very pleasant and willing to be flexible when needed. The hotel was in a great location, easy to get to and from the tube or with uber if needed. The meals were hit or miss, but we were allowed to have a few meals on our own. We enjoyed the one day trip out from London to Stonehenge, it was a nice break from the city.

Overall I had a great time exploring the life of Florence Nightingale and learning about the NHS healthcare system. However I’d like to express some concerns regarding the following: 1. Compressed schedule that did not allow for much needed rest [as we acclimated to the time change] and/or time for sightseeing. 2. Change in local restaurants as not all reserved for us were up to par. 3. Lack of communication between Mary (local guide) and the local guide company, and between Mary and the group. This led to confusion and chaos at times. 4. Lack of CEU’s resulting from Dr. Patricia Hanes absence. On the bright side, I’m grateful for Nora Flanagan (local nurse). Nora was the shining light that helped to add relevance to our trip. She went above and beyond to make our trip memorable.

Alana, we are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time exploring the life of Florence Nightingale and your time in London. Nora Flannigan was indeed an incredible addition to the program, and we are immensely grateful to her stepping in at the very last-minute following Patricia's unforeseen withdrawal from the program. We will follow up with our local partner to review the challenges you highlight and would welcome the opportunity to chat with you further as we always aim to deliver a program of the highest quality. We will reach out directly to schedule a call with you. Thank you for journeying with us. Nicola

Despite many setbacks, we had a great time. Patricia did not facilitate the group and I am unclear how CEU's will be provided. I felt there was not good communication with the local guide Mary or the transportation company. A few times we did not know when or where we would be eating until the last minute, and the frustration in the schedule was seen in Mary. There were some hurry up and wait times that I did not feel were due to real issues other than lack of communication in changes. On one day the entire schedule changed and we not aware until mid day. On our day of departure the bus company was not made aware of the time change and were an hour late. We felt much anxiety based on the information we were given to book our covid testing at the airport within a specific time frame. A couple travelers were so overwhelmed that they bailed out and took an Uber. Nora, the additional nursing expert called at the last minute to replace Patricia, was the best part of the trip. She went out of her way to make sure we were enjoying the trip and even found additional information for us based on all of our individual interests ( she personally accompanied us to extra evening activities on her own). Having never been on such a trip, we were also very confused with the tipping of the driver and local guide. Now that we had additional individuals assisting us in the absence of Patricia Hanes, were we to tip them as well? ( Nora and Dianne). We did, although I personally felt this was not an added expense I should have incurred due to last minute changes from the travel company. Based on how the information on tipping was presented all of us took it that we would be providing the tip at the completion of the program. The driver complained that we had not tipped him, which I felt was inappropriate, but how were any of us to know it would be expected the end of every day. I wish there had been an option to allow even a half day of free time to do something on our own. The days were so packed that it left us with very little opportunity for anything additional. Even one free day at the end would have been wonderful. I would not recommend the Wellcome exhibit, and I would have skipped the Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust meeting unless it was in conjunction with the Nightengale Museum tour. Although interesting, it was really just a presentation by a nursing director and could have been accomplished by a powerpoint. I was anticipating a round table discussion. I would have rather had a free half day to see a more interesting museum. I believe everyone was disappointed that the changing of the guards was not an opportunity. I know it is a true tourist item and not nursing history but we all wanted this experience. I would also change the dinner on day one to just be at the hotel and let the second day be a welcome dinner experience. It appeared to be a wonderful restaurant, but we were so exhausted from travel that it wasn't able to really be appreciated. I enjoyed the experience but would definitely say the communication needs to be improved for travelers.

Kelly, we are glad that over all you enjoyed your experience, and we too are immensely grateful for Nora Flannigan's professionalism, generosity and leadership stepping into the role at such short notice, following Patricia's unforeseen withdrawal from the program. We are very sorry for some of the logistical issues that occurred and thank you for your feedback, we will be following up with our local partner and would welcome an opportunity to discuss your concerns in person. We will reach out directly to schedule a call so we can review in detail the communication challenges you faced. Nicola
