During a cold night on February 17, 1864 the Confederate Submarine, H. L. Hunley rammed the USS Housatonic off the coast of Charleston, and detonated its spar torpedo sinking the Union Warship and becoming the first successful combat submarine in history.
After this triumphant foray, she also sank with her crew to the bottom of the Atlantic where she remained until August 8, 2000. On this auspicious day, after years of planning by archeologists & marine engineers from the State, National Park Service and Smithsonian, this amazing vessel was successfully raised and taken to a special tank at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston.
Today we will have the opportunity to privately view this 19th century marvel and learn about the ship's fascinating history as well as the exciting discoveries that scientists have made since it was brought up from the depths of the ocean.
This excursion also includes free time in the Old City Market for lunch on your own and shopping, as well as an overview tour of Historic Charleston with a special emphasis on its captivating Civil War History.
