South Africa, Zimbabwe & Botswana

October is a fantastic month to visit South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, as it falls within the late dry season, making it an ideal time for wildlife viewing. The weather is generally warm, and the landscapes are dry and clear, providing excellent conditions for outdoor activities. However, to make the most of your trip, here are some travel tips to keep in mind:

1. Weather Considerations

  • South Africa: October is spring in South Africa, which means warmer weather, particularly in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Daytime temperatures can range from 20-30°C (68-86°F), while evenings can still be cool. If you're visiting regions like the Kruger National Park or Senalala Safari Lodge, temperatures are warm during the day but may dip significantly in the evenings.
  • Zimbabwe: In Victoria Falls, October can be quite hot with daytime temperatures soaring above 30°C (86°F), while mornings and evenings are generally pleasant. The Zambezi River may be lower, but the Victoria Falls still offers impressive views, especially from the Zimbabwean side.
  • Botswana: In Chobe National Park and other parts of Botswana, October is one of the hottest months of the year. Expect high daytime temperatures of 35-40°C (95-104°F), but the mornings and evenings can be cooler. The dry season makes game viewing exceptional, but you should be prepared for the heat.

2. What to Pack

  • Light, Breathable Clothing: Bring lightweight, comfortable clothes that will keep you cool in the heat. Loose-fitting, neutral-colored clothing is ideal for safaris, as it helps with comfort and camouflage.
  • Layers for Mornings & Evenings: Though daytime temperatures can be hot, mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially during game drives and walking safaris. Bring a light jacket or fleece, especially if you're going to early morning activities.
  • Sun Protection: The African sun can be intense, especially in October. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect yourself from the sun's rays.
  • Comfortable Shoes: For safaris, walking tours, and exploring, comfortable and sturdy shoes are essential. For game drives, you'll need shoes with good grip, especially if the terrain is uneven.
  • Insect Repellent: Though malaria risk is lower in October, it’s still advisable to bring insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes, especially during evenings.

3. Wildlife Viewing Tips

  • Best Time for Game Viewing: October is one of the best months for safari in Southern Africa. The dry season means animals are concentrated around water sources, making them easier to spot. Expect to see large herds of elephants, buffalo, and impala along with predators like lions and leopards.
  • What to Expect: In Chobe National Park (Botswana) and Kruger National Park (South Africa), you will have opportunities to see a variety of wildlife. The Zambezi River in Victoria Falls is home to hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species.
  • Early Morning and Late Afternoon: Safaris are best at dawn and dusk, as animals are more active during these cooler times. Consider opting for early morning game drives and sunset cruises in Victoria Falls or Chobe.

4. Health & Safety

  • Vaccinations & Health Precautions: Ensure you are up to date with recommended vaccinations, such as yellow fever and hepatitis A/B, as well as malaria prevention (depending on where you are traveling). Consult your doctor well in advance to get the right medications.
  • Stay Hydrated: The heat in October can be intense, so it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your activities.
  • Travel Insurance: Make sure to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers health, cancellations, and any outdoor activities you plan to undertake (e.g., safaris, hikes, etc.).

5. Border Crossing Tips

  • Visas: Check the visa requirements for South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana before your trip. Many travelers from Europe and North America do not require a visa for stays of up to 30 days, but it's best to confirm the specifics for your nationality.
  • Border Crossing Between Countries: When traveling between Zimbabwe and Botswana (for instance, from Victoria Falls to Chobe), you will cross international borders. Have your passport ready and ensure it’s valid for at least six months after your intended departure date.

6. Cultural Etiquette

  • Greetings: In South Africa and Botswana, a handshake is the typical form of greeting, and in Zimbabwe, a handshake accompanied by a slight bow of the head is customary, particularly in more traditional settings.
  • Tipping: Tipping is common in these countries. In restaurants, tipping around 10-15% of the bill is standard, while for safari guides, it’s recommended to tip $10-$20 per day. For hotel staff, $1-2 per service is appreciated.
  • Respecting Traditions: In Zimbabwe, when participating in cultural activities, be respectful of local traditions, especially when meeting tribal members or attending local ceremonies.

7. Money Tips

  • Currency: South Africa uses the South African Rand (ZAR), Botswana uses the Botswana Pula (BWP), and Zimbabwe primarily uses the US Dollar. You can also use credit cards in major cities and lodges, but it’s best to carry local currency for small purchases and tips.
  • ATMs: ATMs are available in major cities, but in more remote areas or reserves, cash may not be easily accessible. It’s a good idea to carry cash for tips and small purchases, particularly in Victoria Falls and Chobe.

8. Packing Tips

  • Luggage: If you are traveling between countries and taking domestic flights, be sure to pack lightly and keep within the baggage allowance, which is typically 20 kg (44 lbs) for checked luggage and 7 kg (15 lbs) for carry-on luggage.
  • Binoculars & Camera Gear: For wildlife viewing, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential. You’ll want to capture the stunning landscapes and animal sightings.

9. Don’t Miss

  • Victoria Falls: Make sure to visit the world-famous Victoria Falls, especially on the Zimbabwean side, where you can get panoramic views. You can also experience activities such as a helicopter ride over the falls, bungee jumping, or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: Enjoy the incredible African sunrises and sunsets, best experienced during a morning game drive or a sundowner on the Zambezi River.
  • Local Markets: Don’t miss the chance to visit local craft markets in Victoria Falls or Gaborone (Botswana) to buy handmade souvenirs, textiles, and artwork.

10. Travel Comfort

  • Stay Cool: The heat in October can be intense, so pack light, airy clothing and keep cool with plenty of water. In the evenings, the air may cool down, so bring a jacket or shawl for comfort.
  • Comfortable Safari Lodges: In Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls, stay at luxury lodges like Ilala Lodge and Senalala Safari Lodge, where meals, excursions, and wildlife experiences are included, ensuring a seamless and stress-free stay.

October in Southern Africa promises an incredible mix of wildlife, culture, and adventure. By following these travel tips, you'll be fully prepared to enjoy everything this stunning region has to offer!

Game Drives at Senalala Safari Lodge

Twice-Daily Game Drives at Senalala Safari Lodge

During our stay at Senalala Safari Lodge, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy twice-daily game drives, each lasting approximately 3 hours. These drives take place in open safari vehicles, offering unobstructed views of the stunning wildlife and landscapes all around.

  • Morning Game Drive: Our day begins early with the first game drive shortly after sunrise. As we venture into the bush, we’ll pause for coffee or tea and a snack, giving you the chance to take in the surroundings and spot some early-morning wildlife.
  • Afternoon Game Drive: In the late afternoon, we head out again for the second game drive, timed perfectly for sun-downers. As the sun sets over the African horizon, you’ll witness the breathtaking colors of the sky before continuing with a drive through the bush aided by a spotlight, offering a chance to see nocturnal creatures in their natural habitat.

The animals roam freely within this expansive reserve, and the game drives provide us with the opportunity to view them in their natural environment. On rare occasions, when exceptional sightings occur, the vehicles may go off-road, allowing us to get even closer to Africa’s magnificent wildlife.

These game drives offer an immersive experience, ensuring each guest feels intimately connected to the wild beauty of Africa.

Packing List

    • Long-sleeve shirts and pants (protect against sun and insects)
    • Shorts and t-shirts for daytime comfort
  • Warm layers: Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring a light jacket or fleece.
    • Lightweight sweater or fleece jacket
    • A warm scarf or beanie for early morning safaris
  • Safari gear:
    • Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, brown) for safaris
    • Comfortable walking shoes for safari walks
    • Closed-toe shoes for game drives (dusty roads)
    • Light, breathable socks
    • A hat or cap to protect from the sun
  • Swimwear: For any hotel pools or relaxing after safari
  • Undergarments and sleepwear
  • Comfortable clothes for casual dinners or outings

Accessories:

  • Sunglasses: Essential for daytime sun
  • Sunscreen: High SPF, and remember to reapply throughout the day
  • Insect repellent: Essential for evening and early morning outings to avoid bites
  • Binoculars: For wildlife viewing during game drives and walks
  • Camera/Smartphone: For photos and keeping in touch with loved ones
  • Water bottle: Reusable for staying hydrated during game drives
  • Small backpack: For day trips or excursions
  • Chargers and power banks: For your devices
  • Travel adapter: South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana use the Type M (South Africa), Type C (Zimbabwe), and Type G (Botswana) plug types

Health and Hygiene:

  • Prescription medications: Bring enough for the duration of your trip, with copies of prescriptions
  • Personal hygiene items:
    • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo
    • Wet wipes and hand sanitizer (for safaris and traveling)
  • First aid kit: Include band-aids, pain relievers, anti-diarrheal medication, and any specific needs (e.g., malaria medication if required)
  • Vaccination card: If you received any recommended vaccines (e.g., Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, etc.)

Documents:

  • Passport: Valid for at least six months after return with at least three blank pages
  • Visas: Zimbabwe visa (issued on arrival), South Africa and Botswana do not require visas for US citizens
  • Travel insurance: Always recommended for international travel
  • Flight tickets/itinerary: Printed or electronic copies
  • Vaccination and health records: Especially for Yellow Fever (if applicable)

Special Items for Safari and Excursions:

  • Safari binoculars: For the best wildlife viewing
  • Camera with zoom lens: To capture the beauty of the landscape and animals from a distance
  • Field guidebook: For identifying wildlife and birds (optional but helpful)
  • Reusable snack bags: For packed lunches on excursions

  • Portable fan or cooling towel: To stay cool in the warmer climate

Optional Items:

  • Light scarf or shawl: For a stylish cover-up during dinners or for sun protection
  • Notebook/Journal: For documenting your experiences
  • Small travel pillow: For comfort on flights or transfers
  • Reusable shopping bag: For small purchases or carrying snacks

By packing these essentials, you’ll be ready to fully enjoy your adventure in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana in October!

Other Suggestions:

  • Casual, comfortable clothes are key. The morning and afternoon game drives will be colder than you think, so please bring warm clothing.
  • Bring your own shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo throughout Africa is not great and its very hard to find shampoo.
  • Wear clothes in khaki, green, beige, and neutral colors. We suggest keeping to light, neutral colors, but not white—it will get dirty and dusty very quickly.
  • Long-sleeved shirts that offer protection from the sun and mosquitoes
  • T-shirts
  • Flip flops for walking around or using the pool
  • Bathing suit
  • Poncho for the falls
  • Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days
  • Jackets and sweaters for early morning and late afternoon game drives
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket in case of rain
  • During the day, it can be warm, so our advice is to pack loose, lightweight layers in natural fabrics such as linen, bamboo, and cotton that will keep you cool and are easier to wash and dry.
  • A wide-brimmed safari hat to protect your face and neck.
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved tops are best, as they protect you from the harsh sun during the day and mosquitoes at night.
  • Take comfy, practical footwear for daytime—the roads are dusty and uneven—and make sure you have sturdy, closed-in walking shoes or trainers for trekking in the bush.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent,  moisturizer, and lip salve.
  • Binoculars and camera equipment.
  • Leave your valuables and expensive jewelry at home. You really won't need them.
  • A pashmina or sarong is a versatile item that you can use for sun protection or to 'glam' up the simplest of outfits if you feel like a change.
  • Power converter – a universal converter can be purchased from Amazon.
  • Please backlight. The small planes we will take have weight restrictions. A soft-sided rucksack is more practical than a hard suitcase—it's easier to fit into small planes or transfer vehicles. Using packing cubes can also help keep your belongings tidy while compressing the volume.
  • Use a portable phone charger to boost your battery when out and about—you don't want to miss that great photo opportunity!
  • Do not pack valuables in your checked bag.
  • Please consult with your doctor or local travel clinic at least six weeks before your adventure to Africa to find out what medications and vaccinations are best for you.
  • Please visit https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/Africa to review safe travel tips and other information related to the country you will be visiting in Africa.
  • Please bring a credit card, debit card, and around $100-$200 in cash for emergencies. You can take out money at the ATM when you arrive, and it will be in local currency. This is an all-inclusive retreat, but you will need money for small purchases and personal tipping.
  • Please bring small bills in USD for personal tipping. USD is accepted.

Visa and Vaccinations

Visa and Vaccine Information for U.S. Citizens Traveling to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana

1. South Africa:

  • Visa Requirements:
    • U.S. citizens do not require a visa for tourist visits to South Africa for stays of up to 90 days. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date, with at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
    • Additional Entry Requirements: You may be asked to show proof of onward travel (a return flight or further travel arrangements) upon entry into South Africa.

    • Recommended Vaccines: The CDC also recommends getting vaccinated for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and rabies if you plan to visit rural or less developed areas.

2. Zimbabwe:

  • Visa Requirements:
    • U.S. citizens do require a visa to enter Zimbabwe. A single-entry visa can be obtained either:
      • On arrival at the airport (Visa on Arrival).
      • Online through the official Zimbabwe e-visa portal, which can be processed prior to your travel.
    • The cost of the visa is approximately $30 USD for a single-entry visa (subject to change), but it’s recommended to confirm the latest fees online.
    • Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel date and has at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps.

  • Vaccinations:
    • Yellow Fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if traveling from a country with a yellow fever risk (as per the WHO's guidelines). If you have traveled through countries with yellow fever risk on your way to Zimbabwe, you will need to show proof of vaccination.
    • Routine Vaccines: Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations including MMR, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.
    • Recommended Vaccines: Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations are recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccination may also be recommended, especially if you're traveling to rural or remote areas.

    • Routine Vaccines: Stay up to date on routine vaccinations like MMR, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.
    • Recommended Vaccines: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and typhoid vaccines are recommended. If you plan to visit rural or less developed areas, rabies vaccination is also recommended.
    • Malaria: Malaria is present in some regions of Botswana, especially in areas like Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta during the wet season (from November to April). Malaria prophylaxis may be recommended for stays in these regions.

General Travel Tips:

  • Travel Insurance: Consider obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that covers both health and travel disruptions, especially since medical care in remote areas may be limited.
  • Travel Health: In addition to vaccinations, it is wise to pack anti-malarial medication (if required), insect repellent, and other necessary health supplies like first aid kits or anti-diarrhea medication.
  • Emergency Services: Familiarize yourself with the emergency contact numbers and healthcare facilities available in each country in case you need assistance while traveling.

Always check with the U.S. State Department and the CDC for the most current visa and vaccine requirements, as these may change. It’s also advisable to visit the official embassy or consulate websites of each country for up-to-date information before your trip.

My friends and I had the best time visiting Zion and Bryce Canyon! The accommodations were beautiful. We enjoyed the wrap-around deck views, relaxing in the hot tub after hiking, and the star-gazing was phenomenal! Alle was a very knowledgeable yoga instructor who did a great job of guiding us through stretches and flows to prepare us for hiking and address any aches and pains afterwards. The concierge service and direction she provided in the parks was a fabulous and worry-free way to travel. Our chef, Amber, completely spoiled us with her delicious, healthy cooking to fuel our hikes and her desserts were off the charts! Thanks for taking such good care of us :) It was fun to meet like-minded yogis and nature lovers from across the country!

I was amazed by the care and kindness by everyone involved. My room was amazing. Loved the hot tub. The views and the walks were breathtaking. A personal chef, come on. A Yoga instructor, come on. The car ride was more than I expected getting to and from the cabin. Other than that, I had the best time. Highly recommend visiting! (Oh, bring an analog watch.)

Thank you, Christina! We’re so glad you felt the care and kindness from our team—it’s exactly what we hope every guest experiences. From the views and hikes to the hot tub and chef-prepared meals (yes, come on! 😄), we’re thrilled it all came together for a trip you’ll remember. And love the analog watch tip—we might need to add that to our packing list! Hope to see you again on another retreat soon.

This was an 11/10 experience for me as a retreat co-host with Walker Wellness and as a human experiencing this retreat. Each day, excursion, meal, and yoga journey topped the former. I'm still riding a high of gratitude from this soul cleansing & peace centering trip! Thank you, Walker Wellness team for this life imprinting experience! If you are a retreat host looking to partner with a team of EXPERTS - Walker Wellness is it.

This was my second trip with Walker Wellness, this time to celebrate my 50th birthday. Cherry blossoms in Japan has been a long time bucket list trip for me, and Amy did not disappoint. From the moment I signed up, she was in communication with me to ensure the itinerary was everything I wanted. Her attention to detail and excellent service along with first class luxury experience made this a trip I will never forget. We were a small group of five women, I travelled solo and felt more comfortable abroad not knowing the language to go with a retreat group that I knew and had a great experience with before. Immediately, the other women embraced me into their fold, and now I feel like I have made new friends that I would easily travel with again. If you’re on the fence, do not hesitate, I can’t imagine a better way to experience Japan for the first time! I’ll definitely be traveling with them again!
