Dear Participant. This is an authentic slow tourism package. The package is about Greenland, the culture, the food, the history, and the people. Of course you will see one of kind stunning nature along the way.
Accommodation ranges from normal hotels with either private bath, but also some are shared bath, to roughing it a bit. We will be staying a few nights both on a farm and in a very small community. There is no infrastructure here, and they are not used to tourists. Some of the communities do not have stores, nor running water in the homes. We will do just as the locals do and prepare some of the food ourselves. You will be expected to help.
There are long walks and hiking in the package. Our modes of transport vary greatly but we will be getting around mostly by small boat, and by walking. Some of the walks are more than 3 hours along dirt paths with good inclines. Generally sailing around in south Greenland is beautiful and care free, however there can be bad weather and rough seas.
The itinerary is set, but weather can always alter our plans. You have to be flexible on our trip as plans can change, and delays can happen.
We will be visiting a number of local Inuit farmers and communities. We must be respectful to the way people live.
Full time Guide, Nik who has extensive experience in Greenland. Also local guides who will guide us in depth.
All local transport by boat or helicopter. There are no roads connecting communities in South Greenland
All Accommodation in Greenland is covered. This ranges from private hotel rooms, to farms stay with local host.
A stop at Uunartoq hot springs and a bath.
Meals outside of Farm stays or Tasiusaq are on you.
Aug. 26 you will depart Newark Airport with a direct flight that arrives into Nuuk Greenland at 18:45. Your guides will meet you and take you to hotel Aurora where you will have accommodation for the night. Dinner and walk around Nuuk
Today we will depart Nuuk for our flight to Narsarsuaq on Air Greenland. The flight will land in Narsarsuaq, where we will spend a little time exploring the area. They have a great museum, a brewery, that also serves good lunch and fantastic nature. We will later depart by boat to Igaliku. The boat will drop us off at Itelleq from where we will have a 4km hike up the Kings Trail to Igaliku. Igaliku is a picturesque village in South Greenland.
Today we will have a very long hike 17km. We will hike along Tunulliarfik Fjord and then up to about 600m where we have a perfect view of Qooqoq Glacier. This is the perfect place for a picnic and some time to really enjoy the view. After coming down, we need to hike back to Itilleq for our 2 hour boat ride to Qaqortoq. In Qaqortoq we will arrive in the evening, intime to enjoy some local food and a walk around town.
Qaqortoq means "white" in English. One explanation is that the river with the vast amounts of trout was well attended by gulls that made up an impressive white spectacle when people approached, and the many gulls took off. We will have time to explore, meet locals, try local special food with Heidi and time to explore the town on your own.
Qaqortoq is the major hub of life in South Greenland.
It is home to shops, museums, fishing industry, skin tannery, fish market, and plenty to do.
Today we will be picked up by RIB boat and work with local guides. Salik owner of local company Tasermiut will take us south to the community of Tasiusaq. We will stay the next couple of days here in a typical Greenlandic house. On the way sailing we will have a couple of hours in Uunartoq hot spring. On arrival to Tasiusaq, there will be some time to explore before cooking together
Today we have to hike a couple of hours to Saputit Tasia a sheep farm run by Peter and Aviaja. We will spend the day with them learning about sheep farming in Greenland and learning about how the local population lives.
We will prepare food with them and share dinner and stay on the farm.
We will hike back to Tasiusaq where a boat will be waiting to take us to Nanortalik.
Nanortalik is a large town by Greenlandic standards, and is the most southern town.
It is home to a heritage museum very worth visiting.
Touring Nanortalik Museum - it's the best museum in the entire country, in my opinion, second in size only to the National Museum & Archives in Nuuk. There are 11-12 buildings with exhibits about historic healthcare, plants and animals plus medicinal uses, fishing, migration of East Greenlanders around the tip of Greenland to South Greenland, Viking history, geology, the Hans Hedtoft ship sinking and disappearance, colonial era and more .
We will have time to explore the village after this before heading to the hotel for rest.
Today we will depart Nanortalik by Air Greenland Helicopter to Narsarsuaq. We will take a morning majestic short flight over Eriksfjord back to Nasarsuaq. We will leave our things at the the airport and explore Nasarsuaq on foot. Nasarsuaq is a changing community. Home to one of the original airports in Greenland. The airport was built by the US military as a base during WWII. It is also home to a great little museum and the Qajaq Brewery. The outskirts of the town are full of beautiful nature and summer houses.
Afternoon flight back to Nuuk, where you will be in the same hotel.
