Participants can explore tools like birding apps and field guides, practice visual and auditory ID, and learn simple strategies to boost their birding skills. This trip is ideal for birders of all experience levels, and especially welcoming to those who are new to the hobby or looking to build confidence in the field—all without the pressure of a fast-paced itinerary.

Welcome to Arizona! After arriving at Tucson International Airport (TUS), you’ll meet your guide and fellow travelers for a scenic start to the trip. We’ll begin with a visit to Sweetwater Wetlands, a unique desert oasis on the edge of the city. This well-known birding site offers our first chance at specialties like Gambel’s quail, Gila woodpecker, vermilion flycatcher, verdin, and Abert’s towhee. Later, we’ll check into our comfortable hotel in Green Valley, where we’ll settle in and enjoy a welcome dinner as a group.

Trip starts and ends at Tucson International Airport (TUS).

We’ll begin the day at Desert Meadows Park, a thoughtfully designed desert garden with diverse plantings and excellent bird habitat. Feeders and water features attract hummingbirds, woodpeckers, sparrows, and desert specialties. We’ll take time here to observe behavior, practice identification skills, and enjoy close views in a comfortable setting. In the afternoon, we’ll visit a popular feeding station in the nearby Santa Rita Mountains. This lively site attracts a variety of regular visitors, including multiple hummingbird species—among them Rivoli’s hummingbird, the second-largest hummingbird north of Mexico—along with Mexican jays and Arizona woodpeckers.

Today we head to the Patagonia region, one of Arizona’s most celebrated birding areas. We’ll begin at the Paton Center for Hummingbirds, where well-maintained feeders provide excellent viewing of desert and riparian species, including the localized violet-crowned hummingbird. We’ll also explore other Patagonia hotspots, which feature varied habitats ranging from scrub and canyon to riverside woodland. Casual trails and open views make these sites great places to continue honing field skills while adding to our species list.

We’ll end our trip with a visit to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a renowned natural history and botanical center showcasing the region’s unique landscapes, plants, and wildlife. It’s an inspiring final stop that ties together the birds, habitats, and ecosystems we’ve experienced throughout the weekend. After a farewell lunch, we’ll return to the airport for departures.
