About this trip

Africa is a destination that captures the imagination of travelers like no other. Once considered the “Dark Continent” it remains mysterious and alluring in the travel imagination  Imprint’s Southern Africa includes the best the continent has to offer and the most diverse 12 days that can be had on a tour. We start with thundering Victoria Falls – “The Smoke that Thunders” as it was known by the natives. Then it is amazing game-viewing with 5 days of safari in Zimbabwe and Botswana. Then, with a complete change of scenery we conclude in vibrant Capetown. We’ll venture to Cape Point, photograph penguins, sample wine, ascend Table Mountain, and enjoy Africa’s most engaging urban center. For those who choose to extend to Namibia, we’ll experience another entirely new ecosystem as we explore the desert state.

Itinerary

Southern Africa
Victoria Falls, Botswana, & South Africa

Day 1  Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Meeting; Zambezi Sunset Cruise; Dinner
The Kingdom Hotel is one of Victoria Falls most luxurious accommodations and it is walking distance from the market, downtown, and the falls!  After a mid-afternoon get-acquainted meeting we’ll enjoy a sundowner cruise on the Zambezi River.  The Zambezi sunset cruise is a traveler’s institution:  animals coming to the river for their evening drink (and an open bar for us!), beautiful scenery, hippos lounging alongside, the thundering sounds of the falls approaching, and another amazing African sunset.  Then it’s on to our Boma Dinner. Get ready for an energetic evening of music and dancing entertainment accompanied by a spectacular buffet dinner.
The Kingdom Hotel (4 nights)  https://www.thekingdomhotel.co.za/

Day 2  Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls National Park; Township Visit; Free afternoon
Spectacular Victoria Falls, one of the world’s seven natural wonders, is our goal this morning.  “So lovely it must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” said David Livingstone of the spectacular Mosi-oa-Tunya - ‘The smoke that thunders’.  The mighty Zambezi River is divided into a series of braided channels that descend in many separate falls.  Together, the Falls are over a mile across and boast the largest curtain of water in the world – over 130 million gallons of water per minute go over the falls and drop more than 300 feet to the roiling gorge below.  We’ll be here at the end of the dry season so photography will be at its best.
Later this morning we visit Chinotimba Township. The word Chinotimba describes the roar of the water from the Falls in the local Nambya language.  We will be hosted in a local family residence for light lunch and a Q&A session.  The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the area and its many excursions, wildlife viewing, and adventure activities.  Options include:  walking or night safaris; white water rafting, a large variety of adventure sports activities, and much more.

Day 3  Victoria Falls
Rhino Safari
An early morning start takes us to a private game preserve where black rhinos reside.  The viewing success rate exceeds 90% so we should see the elusive animals.  And of course, we will see other wildlife as well.  We’ll be back at The Kingdom before lunch and the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish.  Tonight we’ll have dinner together at the Lookout Café, overlooking the dramatic gorge that zig-zags away from the base of the falls.

Day 4  Victoria Falls
Today our activity is the “Flight of Angels” helicopter ride over the falls.  This activity has been so popular in the past we’ve decided to include it on this year’s tour.  The rest of your day is free.

Day 5  Chobe National Park
Sunset cruise
Today we cross into neighboring Botswana.  Upon our arrival in Kasane we enjoy a sunset cruise on the Chobe River where we can watch elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and myriad birds without having to reach for our binoculars.  You’ll be near enough for close-up photographs, not to mention the chance of a spectacular African Sunset. Kwalape Safari Lodge offers the perfect base to discover the wonders of Chobe NP.  The main restaurant and bar are nestled into the surrounding bush with a pool-side bar, ideal for sun downers and sharing the day’s experiences.
Kwalape Lodge (3 nights)  https://kwalapesafarilodge.co.bw/

Day 6  Chobe
AM game drive; Q&A
In case we’ve not seen enough animals on previous safari outings, today will begin with a Chobe game drive.  The park is over 4000 square miles of wilderness area watered by the Chobe & Savuti Rivers – big game magnets.  This includes lion and some of the highest concentration of elephants in Africa, an estimated population of around 25,000.  In addition, we’re likely to see zebra, giraffe, warthog, and numerous antelope including Sable, Roan, Oribi, Reedbuck, Lechwe, and the colorful Chobe Bushbuck.  Bird watching opportunities in Chobe are ample and include some 350 species including the African Fish Eagle, the rare Pell’s Fishing Owl, saddle-billed storks, long-toed Plovers, pink-backed Pelicans, African Skimmers, Bradfield’s Hornbills, and Carmine Beeeaters. Another Chobe highlight, exclusive to Imprint, is an informal Q&A session with our host, Milton K., director of the lodge.  Among other topics, he will share what life is like in today’s Botswana, why Botswana is so different from the surrounding countries, why its people are so confident, how his marriage was arranged, and how he got his nickname!

Day 7  Chobe
AM game drive; PM game drive or river cruise; local entertainment
More game drives highlight the day's plans. But today’s unique activity is a wonderful music and dance performance from a local dance troupe.  At Imprint, we have arranged local music and dance performances in many countries – this is by all measures the most energetic, the most authentic, the most fun, and the most engaging performance we have ever offered.

Day 8  Cape Town South Africa
Today is a travel day.  We have a morning at leisure before being transferred to Kasane's airport.  We fly via Johannesburg to our destination of Cape Town (flight included).
Daddy Long Legs Art Hotel (4 nights)  https://daddylonglegs.co.za/

Day 9  Cape Town
Cape Excursion
This is an awe-inspiring day-long tour to the towering headland known as Cape Point.  The drive south highlights the 12 Apostles peaks, historic and picturesque coastal villages, and photogenic beaches.  At the Good Hope Nature Reserve we’ll enjoy rich fynbos vegetation, bird life, endemic antelope and zebra, and the historic lighthouse.  For lunch we travel on to Simon’s Town with its charming Victorian architecture.  Then a visit to the charming penguin colony at beautiful Boulders Beach.

Day 10  Cape Town
Winelands
A delightful drive takes us into the heart of the Cape winelands, through superb mountain ranges, vineyards, and Cape Dutch homesteads.  Our first stop of the morning is a local wine estate. An informative cellar tour and wine tasting gives us personalized insight into the finer points of wine-making.   We proceed to the town of Franschhoek, which dates to the 17th century when French Huguenots arrived.  Billed as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, this charming town retains its French Huguenot style. Then it’s on to Stellenbosch via scenic Helshoogte Pass. Take a stroll down the canal-lined avenues in the shade of giant oaks and past beautifully preserved historic buildings or enjoy the coffee shops, galleries, antique shops, and wine bars that line the sidewalks.  This university town exudes an air of quiet intellectualism and wine-making history. With the great numbers of wine estates on offer we are truly spoiled for choices when we enjoy our second wine tasting of the day.  After our return to Cape Town, your evening is free.

Day 11  Cape Town
Free day
Imprint will assist with free time transportation arrangements and bookings.  Two obvious options are Robben Island and Table Mountain. Located in Capetown’s Table Bay, Robben Island is the infamous Apartheid era prison.  The most famous inmate, of course, was Nelson Mandela.  All groups are escorted through the complex by former inmates – a fascinating cultural connection experience. The rotating Table Mountain Aerial Cablecar sweeps visitors to the top of Table Mountain. It is one of Capetown’s most popular tourist attractions.  The upper cable station is on the westernmost end of the Table Mountain plateau, at an altitude of 1067 meters (3500 feet).  The station offers views over Table Bay, Capetown center, Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south.  Our final dinner together is at Marco’s African Place, a famous Cape Town restaurant renowned for live Marimba music and its exquisite indigenous African and cape cuisine fusion.
[Note:  Imprint Tours’ operational values are to include all major sights on our tours.  However, Robben Island does not offer any group discounts, meaning we are unable to add value by including it.  The Table Mountain excursion is weather dependent and cannot be guaranteed.  Therefore, we have elected to make these excursions optional.]

Day 12  Tour Over
Tour over after breakfast. For those extending to Namibia we will depart after breakfast.  For those departing for home today, Imprint will assist with airport transfer arrangements.

Namibia Extension

Day 1  Clanwilliam
Cederberg Wilderness

Day 2  Orange River
Today is largely a travel day as we make our way to the Orange River which serves as the Namibian border.  Upon arrival we can relax in our lovely riverside bungalows or have a sunset drink by the hotel pool as the river meanders by below us.  Dinner together at our hotel.
Felix Unite Camp Provenance (1 night)  http://felixunite.com

Day 3  Fish River Canyon
Canoe trip; Fish River Canyon
After breakfast we’ll indulge in a leisurely paddle as we travel by canoe on the Orange River.  In the afternoon we’ll drive to nearby Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and second largest in the world.  Hopefully there will be time for a quick, easy hike along the canyon rim upon arrival and possibly another African sunset with the magnificent views from the canyon rim.
Canyon Roadhouse (1 night)  https://gondwana-collection.com/accommodation/canyon-roadhouse

Day 4  Sossusvlei
Today is another travel day as we have lots of miles to cover.  Our goal is the clear highlight of southern Namibia – magnificent Sossusvlei, home to the globe’s highest sand dunes and gateway to the Namib-Naukluft National Park.  We’ll have a picnic lunch on the road and at the end of our day we can settle into our comfortable lodge.
Desert Camp (2 nights)  https://www.desertcamp.com/

Day 5  Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei; Sesreim Canyon
Today is our desert activity day.  An early start will allow us to enjoy the early golden light that electrifies the reddish sands of Sossusvlei’s magnificent dunes.  Our destination is Dead Vlei with its stunning, picturesque black petrified trees, backed by the golden dunes and blue desert skies.  We’ll finish off our morning with an easy hike through Sesriem Canyon, carved millions of years ago by the Tsauchab River. This is an absolutely spectacular photographic day – the clear highlight of the extension. With luck, there may even be water in the vlei (lake).  In the afternoon we can help arrange an optional scenic flight.

Day 6  Windhoek
This day will be spent driving the edge of the Namib Naukluft National Park on our way north to Windhoek.  The Namib-Naukluft Desert is an ancient land with an ageless spirit. It is home to some of the rarest plant and animal species in the world; sightings of this flora and fauna on a Namibian safari are a must. The animals of this harsh landscape include the Oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, leopards, and cheetahs. One can also see the Welwitschia mirabilis, an odd-looking desert shrub, one of which is a large, protected specimen estimated at over 1 500 years old.

Reviews

We really enjoyed this trip. Japan is beautiful with lush green rolling hills. The people are fantastic. They are polite and helpful at every turn and they enjoy the American tourists attempts to butcher their language. Our tour guide, Lulu, was absolutely exceptional. She was a bright spot on the days when we were feeling a bit fatigued. Even with the ample free time the trip felt somewhat fast paced. Accommodations were in-line with expectations of Japan and their tight spaces. We were glad we took the trip and enjoyed every aspect of it, including the earthquake.

It was the trip of a lifetime! We especially loved our tour guide, Lulu, who went above and beyond for everyone! We felt like we got to experience everything and had such an amazing time.

This was a fantastic trip!! Lulu was one of the nicest, most positive guides we have ever had on a trip - and we've taken quite a few tours over the past ten years! We appreciated the choices of hotels as they were always good quality and very convenient to food and transportation throughout the cities we visited. In addition, the stops made were enjoyable, interesting, and informative. I really feel as though this is a great overview of Japan. It also made us want to go back to see more! My only complaint was that Maia would often address the group in a patronizing manner when giving information or instructions. None of us were children and we were all experienced travelers, so that really wasn't necessary. I know she is young and just starting out in this field, but it would be great if she could learn some more positive methods of communication. Overall, however, this was a really wonderful adventure.
By Elizabeth M for Japan on Jun 21, 2024
I had a great time and really enjoyed the tour. Lulu our in-country guide is the BEST! She has a personable, engaging, informative, & lovable demeanor. Which makes for a great tour guide! Unfortunately, she is leaving Japan to live in Europe. But sounds like Imprint does a good job at finding their local in-country tour hosts from other travelers who have gone on prior Imprint tours. It's a well-curated Japan 'overview' trip. You go to key cities. Imprint focuses on key castles, shrines & temples. You can add more during your free time if you think you want to visit/see more. The trip also has some fun experiential activities (Zen meditation, sushi making, sweets making). If you can, add a day or two ahead, for more time in Tokyo. Hiroshima is a key, important city to visit, very sobering. If you can, plan something uplifting, meditative, lighter, post visiting the key historical A-bomb sites and museums to help re-establish balance for the day. ~10 to 12 on our tour were able to get tickets for a night baseball game (the Carps) in Hiroshima. If you can get tickets to a baseball game somewhere on the trip - GO! The enthusiasm of the crowd/fans is infectious. Plus good baseball. Make sure you stay for their 7th-inning rituals too! Games are sold out in advance. If you can buy local tickets from boxoffice - best value (general seating section - seats not assigned). Can use Stubhub but will pay a premium for the same general festival seating areas. (still worth it to catch a game). But go early to secure general, open seats, or may be hard to find seats. If you want to experience the traditional Temple lodging (eg tatami-mat style eating & food (vegetarian) and sleeping), public bath and participate (optional) with Buddhist meditation and prayers in a less intimidating manner the Koyosan extension is a great experience. The Koyosan mountain area and the Okuno-in cemetery is incredibly historical/important to Buddhism. As well as one of the most peaceful, and naturally beautiful cemeteries I've ever visited. The trip's hosted meals (i.e., 1st night in each new city, except for Osaka, where Imprint hosts the last night meal) are focused on more common Japanese food, which accommodates a wider range of eaters. At all of the hotels, during breakfast, you can experience other unique Japanese dishes (e.g. noodles, soups, natto, rice, fish, vegetables, Japanese curry, etc.,). You can experiment more with your open meals too. You also have access to Japanese-style eggs, sausages, yogurt, fresh fruit (at most hotels), and breads. If you are a big coffee drinker and tend to get up early, consider packing a single cup, pour-over funnel plus filters. You can bring some initial ground coffee and can get more as you travel. There is always a hot water pot & coffee cups in your room. You can get powder creamer from the lobby. All rooms have small refrigerators too. There is always a convenience store just steps away! Coffee shops (e.g., Starbucks/Tully's & local shops) often open much later (e.g., post 7 am or 8 am). Some hotels have self-serve espresso machines but you may not have access until 7 am, when the breakfast area is open. We learned this travel tip from a fellow traveler & will do this in the future! Travel is eased through the use of a private coach bus for most of the transportation. There is one local train & Shinkansen travel leg (Takayama-Kyoto). Consider having a small overnighter bag & using Japan's inexpensive & very efficient luggage transport if you don't want to worry about managing your luggage for this transport leg. We shipped our spinner bags from our Tokyo hotel, day packed for Takayama and our bags were waiting for us in Kyoto. You will also use some local subway trains/buses for some activities/sites. As well as for your free time ventures. Have great walking shoes - you'll be getting in your steps and walking up/down a fair amount of stairs too (stations and sites). Hotels were well located, usually near key/fun neighborhoods and train/local subway stations. One hotel also had an onsen in the hotel. So the tour group could try without having to be on the Koyosan extension. Rooms are small compared to US standards - but manageable. Imprint usually reserves two twin bed rooms for couples. These rooms are often larger. Use packing cubes to help keep things organized & accessible as you may not be able to unpack your suitcase. You'll love the Toto/Toto-like toilets everywhere! I have never encountered cleaner public bathrooms (in towns and rest stops) with high-end Toto toilets in my life! You may see some squat toilets, but all of our stops had Western-style toilets too. For our trip, a few of the hotels (Kyoto & Hiroshima) have very effective wash & dry (i.e. combined-cycle) machines plus laundry detergent built in. So if you pack for 7 - 8 days, you should be fine. Save up some coins for these stops. Some machines only take 100Y coins (500Y-600Y per wash&dry load). Some may take Suica/Pasmo too. Try to check in advance, machines are often in high demand - with your other tour partners and other hotel guests! (Bring a coin purse or small Ziploc baggie to hold and manage your coinage during the trip!). If Japan is on your travel list, this is a great way to get a solid introduction to a beautiful country. The country is beautiful, incredibly clean - especially for the population/number of tourists, very safe, and the Japanese people are gracious hosts, who take great pride in their country, craftmanship, and service! On our first exposure to the local subway trains (~9 pm) from HND airport to our hotel in Asakusa, locals were quick to help us in the train stations to ensure we were at the right platform and got on the right train. Learn about Japan's history, its culture, and embrace the customs and you will have a great trip! Note if you are a tall person ~5' 10" to 6ft or taller, be prepared to stoop/duck a LOT. I would not let that stop travel but be aware.
