City Tour and Table Mountain

This majestic mountain lies at the southern point of Africa. For many centuries it kept a watchful eye on the constantly changing city of Cape Town. The name ‘Table Mountain’ comes from the flat-surfaced top of this mountain. The locals call the white clouds that roll in from the North ‘the tablecloth.’ Since the first person laid eyes on Table Mountain, it has exerted its powerful and charismatic pull, enchanting and drawing all that fall under its spell. The way to the top has never been easy, and for many centuries only a handful of bold and enterprising people could say that they had climbed it. The Table Mountain project was delayed yet again by war; this time the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). The plan was resuscitated in 1926 after a Norwegian engineer, Trygve Stromsoe, presented plans for a cableway to the top of Table Mountain. The plan caught the collective eye of a group of eminent local businessmen. The idea that an easy route up would finally become a reality drew them together, forming the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) to finance the construction. Work began soon afterwards, and the project was finished relatively quickly. On the 4th of October 1929, the Mayor of Cape Town, Rev A J S Lewis, headed the official opening ceremony that was attended by over 200 others.

Bo-Kaap Walking Tour

DateMonday, Oct 18, 2027
You will visit a cultural-rich Bo-Kaap quarter; do a walking tour viewing Parliament, St Georges Cathedral and Company Gardens. You will then visit to the Castle of Good Hope and Table Mountain, if the weather permits. Bo-Kaap, which lies on the fringes of Cape Town’s city centre, is full of character and colourful houses (pink, orange, lime green and turquoise), many of which are national monuments and date back to the 1750s, with cobbled streets that rise up to meet the lower slopes of Signal Hill on which the suburb lies. A lively suburb, the Bo-Kaap’s inhabitants are a blend of cultures that descend from slaves imported by the Dutch in the 1700s. They came from Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago.

District Six Museum Visit

DateMonday, Oct 18, 2027
Originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants, District Six was vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, the process of removals and marginalization had begun. The first to be 'resettled' were black South Africans, forcibly displaced from the district in 1901. As the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became a neglected ward of Cape Town. In 1966 it was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act of 1950, and by 1982, the life of the community was over.

Robben Island Tour

DateTuesday, Oct 19, 2027
After breakfast, our guide will meet you at your hotel for a full day Robben Island and afternoon Peninsula tour. Since the Dutch settled at the Cape in the mid-1600s, Robben Island has been used primarily as a prison. Indigenous African leaders, Muslim leaders from the East Indies, Dutch and British soldiers and civilians, women, and anti-apartheid activists, including South Africa's first democratic President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and the founding leader of the Pan Africanist Congress, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, were all imprisoned on the Island. Robben Island has not only been used as a prison. It was training and defence station in World War II (1939-1945). In the 1840s, Robben Island was chosen for a hospital because it was regarded as both secure (isolating dangerous cases) and healthy (providing a good environment for cure). During this time, political and common-law prisoners were kept on the Island. As there was no cure and little effective treatment available for leprosy, mental illness, and other chronic illnesses in the 1800s, Robben Island was a kind of prison for the hospital patients too. Since 1997 it has been a museum and a heritage site. The museum is a dynamic institution, which acts as a focal point of South African heritage.

Cape Wine Taste at Groot Constantia

DateWednesday, Oct 20, 2027
Groot Constantia is the oldest winery in South Africa. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples. In 1685 he chose 891 morgen (about 763 ha) situated behind Table Mountain for its wine-growing potential and magnificent scenery. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product. Our founder named his farm "Constantia" after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today we follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Explore Pilanesberg's Wildlife and Volcanic Landscapes

general icon

Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a sanctuary for a variety of Wildlife including the Big Five - rhino, lion, elephant, leopard, and buffalo. Situated inside the eroded crater of an extinct volcano in the Northwest province (adjacent to Sun City), it has a history that covers many centuries. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic and Alkaline Ring Complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature. The early presence of man can be seen in the numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that are scattered throughout the park. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as 'Bushveld'. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. The colorful hues, varied habitats and panoramas will delight and entertain photographers and visitors. Off the center of the park is Thabayadiotso, 'the Proud Mountain' and the beauty of Pilanesberg is reflected in a large central lake, the Mankwe Dam.

Geological and Ecological Features

The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg National Park – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature. The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills – the formation rises from the surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the 'Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex'. Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex. Several rare (but not necessarily economically important) minerals occur in the park. Pilanesberg National Park rates high amongst the world’s outstanding geological phenomena. Pilanesberg has survived ages of erosion and stands high above the surrounding bushveld plains. The early presence of man can be seen in the numerous Stone and Iron Age sites that are scattered throughout the park. The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as 'Bushveld'. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found cohabitation with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.
