Short answer: come and find out for yourself. Long answer: it's sort of like India, without the madness and crowds. It's still mad, and there are still crowds, but not quite on the same scale.
It's a small island that somehow packs in everything, ancient cities carved into rock, mist-covered tea plantations climbing into the hill country, jungle thick enough to hide leopards and elephants, and beaches that would headline a trip on their own anywhere else. You can be watching monkeys from a 5th-century rock fortress in the morning and picking tea on a plantation by lunch, then driving down through the clouds to the coast by dinner. Not many countries let you do that in a single day.
It's also got a serious cultural legacy from centuries of trade and immigration, Sinhalese, Tamil, Indian, English, Portuguese, Dutch. Pretty much every seafaring culture has touched the island at some point, and you can see it everywhere: colonial forts sitting next to Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils down the road from mosques, and a food scene shaped by all of it. Which means the food is seriously good. Like don't even get us started.
And because it's compact, roughly the size of Ireland, you don't lose your whole trip to travel days. You genuinely feel the country change around you as you go, hill country to coast, jungle to desert-dry plains, in a way that would take weeks to cover somewhere bigger. That's exactly what makes it work from the back of a Tuk-Tuk.
Ah, the humble Tuk-Tuk. The ride so nice they named it twice. These are standard issue, Indian-made, Sri Lankan-modified Tuk-Tuks.
They’ve got three wheels (don’t ask us why), an open frame, a canvas roof with drop down sides, a cabin for the driver and two seats in the back. Oh, and an engine: a 4-stroke beast that is probably slightly more powerful than a horse.
Tuk-Tuks have a few advantages: they’re durable, easy to use and very forgiving. They’ll happily handle almost any surface, climate or level of abuse. Their cruising speed is a tasty 35kph (22mph). Their cruising altitude is about one foot.
The Challenge is broken up into various driving legs. Each team gets a road map and a daily navigational sheet, which they’ll use to get from A to B each day. The winning team isn’t necessarily the team that finishes first, it’s the one that accumulates the most Challenge points. How do you get points? By nailing various challenges, we set you along the way.
That means that racing is not really encouraged. In fact it’s actively discouraged. There’s no need to set a new Sri Lankan ground-speed record (very difficult to do on a 200cc Tuk-Tuk, but still…) We’ll provide mechanical support when you need it, but essentially you’re hiring a Tuk-Tuk and driving it independently each day. By yourself. Han solo.
Our Tuk-Tuk adventure is about new experiences, cultural immersion but mainly about having fun. Where you have to work for it, get dirty but finish off indulging in a fresh drink and outrageously delicious food while laughing about the challenges of today.
All of our Adventure Challenges are geared around fundraising and responsible travel. It’s kind of our thing. That means that 5% of every dollar we get goes straight back to flagship charity projects and tree-planting campaigns in the countries we visit. The grassroots organisations that can really make a difference in the world.
Tuk-Tuks are unique vehicles that require careful handling and maintenance. While our team works tirelessly to ensure the safety and reliability of our fleet, it´s important to note that Tuk-Tuks are delicate machines that can experience mechanical issues or breakdowns due to improper handling or poor road conditions.
We take great pride in providing our customers with an authentic and adventurous travel experience, and part of that experience is accepting the risks and challenges that come with driving a Tuk-Tuk.
In the event that a Tuk-Tuk does experience mechanical issues we have mechanics on hand and, depending on the nature of the breakdown, it may be the responsibility of the driver to repair the vehicle at their own expense.
We understand that this may be an inconvenience, but we believe it is a fair price to pay for the thrill and excitement of Tuk-Tuk travel.
So, if you´re ready to embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure, just remember to drive carefully, follow our safety guidelines, and embrace the challenges that come with this unique mode of transportation.
After all, it´s all part of the adventure!
Just a quick heads-up—if your adventure falls on a Sri Lankan public holiday, there may be restrictions on alcohol consumption in public places due to local festivities and religious observances. While this means bars and restaurants won’t be serving alcohol on those days, there will still be plenty to enjoy and eat and drink!
This is just a small reminder that part of the adventure is embracing and respecting local cultures and traditions, and we appreciate your understanding.
