About this trip

Join Blue Planet for another week of world-class diving in St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Croix’s rich culture and history, along with its beautiful beaches and exciting recreational activities, create an experience unlike any other in the Caribbean. Whether you are newly certified or an advanced diver, diving is easy, accessible and offers an array of experiences for everyone. Dive a wreck, wall, pier and reef all in one day! We'll also be offering coral restoration training and dives for any citizen scientists on the trip.

St. Croix

Formerly the stomping grounds of some of history’s most famous pirates, the Virgin Islands are now invaded by thousands of visitors who arrive daily by air and by sea. There are approximately 100 green, hilly islands, some governed by the United States and some by Great Britain. Christiansted and Frederiksted, the two main towns of St. Croix, flourished as commercial ports during the eighteenth century and nineteenth century. Distinct architecture reflects the seven flags--Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish, and American -- that have flown over the island. Today, visitors to St. Croix can enjoy many indoor and outdoor activities, from fine dining, shopping, and a casino, to golf, scuba diving, and horseback riding.

The Diving

Minimum dive certification/experience:  Perfect for beginners. A great spot to complete your Open Water Diver certification, Advanced Open Water Diver and more.

Sea life is abundant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than 500 species of fish, 40 types of coral and hundreds of invertebrates inhabit the water. Vibrant blue tang, silvery horse-eye jacks, queen triggerfish, spiny Caribbean lobster, spotted eagle rays, creole wrasses, and cleaner gobies are just a sampling of the marine life populating the underwater terrain. As sun sets, octopus, seahorses and moray eels make their appearance. Hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles, call the USVI home and can be seen on many a dive. Lucky vacationers may even witness turtles hatching on one of the many turtle nesting grounds.

The best scuba diving is along “The Wall” that runs about 7 miles parallel to the North Shore of St. Croix. Cane Bay Dive Shop has a prime location on this northern shore and offers divers more than twenty different dive sites to explore within one mile in either direction as well as the "must-do" Frederiksted Pier, the Wrecks at Butler bay and other west end dives.

Other Activities

From visiting historic Fort Frederik and following the Heritage Trail to hiking the rainforest and wading in secluded tidal pools, there much on St. Croix that awaits your discovery. Buck Island Underwater National Park is one of St. Croix's most popular attractions, boasting 704 acres of clear water and healthy coral reefs. Estate Whim Plantation, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and casinos are the other popular attractions on the island.  Plus there's kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, biking and more to keep you busy! Sunset sail, anyone? Or a rum and beer tour?

Cane Bay Dive Shop & Arawak Bay Inn

The Cane Bay Dive Shop is a PADI 5-Star IDC Dive center that's been diving the north shore of St. Croix for almost 30 years. In addition to to boat dives, we can do shore dives right in Cane Bay plus dive the Frederiksted Pier.

Located on the tranquil north side of the island of St. Croix, the Arawak Bay Inn overlooks the beautiful Salt River Bay. The charming B&B has 14 rooms, each with a king bed or 2 full-size beds, a balcony and air conditioning, plus a pool, honor bar and more. It's just a short 15 minute drive from the airport, a 7 minutes drive from the Cane Bay Dive Shop and 3 minute walk from the Salt River Marina from which kayaking and boating tours can be arranged.

When traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands, U.S. citizens enjoy all the conveniences of domestic travel  -- no passport required! You should plan to fly into St. Croix (STX) on Saturday, July 20. You can fly home at any time on July 27. Please email or call the shop before booking your flight!

Blue Planet is a different kind of scuba diving organization — aimed at providing the best education and experiences to divers in the Washington, DC area and beyond, while harnessing the excitement and adventure of scuba diving to help protect our fragile oceans.

The diving was great! Sharks, wrecks, and schools and schools of fish! We also saw eels and octopuses! Josh and Heather were very approachable and easy going organizers who made space for everyone to opt-in to the group dinners but definitely gave no pressure. They addressed any problems immediately and with grace, and generally added to the experience. While the staff were all very kind and friendly, the NC dive shop (Olympus) offers very little in terms of included amenities and services. You do everything yourself: analyze and record your own EAN, put your tanks on the boat, set up your equipment, and the dives are self-guided. Lunch and refreshments are not provided on board (but there is plenty of space to put your own in the coolers and minifridge, plus a toaster oven and microwave). This was all fine and communicated ahead of time, but is quite different from my experiences elsewhere, so worth noting, especially since the prices were higher than I am used to. Most sites were about 2 hours offshore, so I assume much of the cost can be attributed to fuel. Two of the three days, we did both dives on the same site. The first day, the other Olympus Dive Shop boat was anchored on the stern of the huge wreck and our boat was anchored on the bow. It seems to me that we could have at least switched locations of the two boats during our hour plus surface interval to get a somewhat different dive in for the second tank, but instead we did the exact same dive twice (which albeit was a great dive). Only two people from our group stayed in the dive lodge, which I highly recommend for those with a tolerance for hostel living. It was very well located, an easy walk to most of the restaurants and (crucially) to the dive shop. Lots of space in the fridge and a chill living room area, plus the bathrooms were clean. I could see it getting a little crowded if at capacity, but we only had 6-9 people staying there any given night. Definitely a good budget option! Plus you get to meet some other divers, hear their stories, and get their advice on the sites. All in all, a great trip! I would definitely recommend it to experienced divers who like sharks, wrecks, and fish galore!
Another great Caribbean dive trip with Blue Planet. Dive shop, dive masters, and the BP staff made sure we had fantastic dives and fun as a group. Was a good value for the money too!
Awesome trip! Delicious food! Amazing crew! Great group! Well equipped vessel! Diving was good. 5 dives a day - sweet! Got to see the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, manta rays, tiger shark, many frogfish, nudibranchs and much more. Completed many night dives, including a Blackwater dive. All crew were highly knowledgeable, caring and interactive 24/7. I will never forget being covered with a warm towel post every dive :). Super trip with an awesome dive team and divers.
We all enjoyed the trip. The dive crew was very well organized and great to dive with. The hotel that we stayed at was privately owned. The owners we very nice and responsive to needs. I Had never traveled with Blue Planet before. I found the group to be made up of great people. Very respectful of the differing skill level of the group. Their enjoyment of the dives as well as their respect for the environment was obvious. I plan to travel more with them in the future. Really relaxing week.
Had a great time with the crew from Blue Planet. Marin is the best! While the Hilton hotel (Resort, what a crock)was in a great location, the price they charged for breakfast is outrageous! 23 bucks what a rip off! Really ticked me off!!! Majority of the dive shop personal were very helpful, professional. Capt Scott a true professional in his briefings and handling the boat! Didn’t like how one dive guide was inattentive and basically lost the group, claiming we were “ ahead of her” . Overall Marin and the rest of the folks from Blue Planet made me feel right at home,
