About this trip

Celebrate New Year's by exploring the best trail running in Spain on our winter 2019 running holiday in Europe. The trails of the Costa Blanca region are a hidden gem, offering everything from technical rocky summits to mellow coastal roads. Our Spain running retreat offers the best of both worlds: sun and moderate running temperatures, mountains and the beach, trails and roads, adventure and relaxation at a Spanish villa, wine and delicious and fresh Spanish cuisine.

We'll provide transport to the best trails and hidden summits of the area for guided daily runs, where we'll explore ridge running, farm roads through olive and almond trees, and seaside runs along the mediterranean coast. You're free to run as much or little as you like from the home base of our villa. Enjoy sunrises, sunsets, and afternoon siestas from our Spanish villa, which offers place to relax and soak up the sun on our terrace overlooking the nearby mountain range. Optional side activities are plentiful, ranging from exploring the nearby beach towns, swimming in the nearby lake, lounging on the terrace, wine tasting at local bodegas, or kayaking the sea caves at the coast.

This retreat adventure is open to ages 15 and up of any pace. In this trip you can run as much or little as you please. To participate in the guided daily group runs, must be able to complete 7-15 miles of running, including hills. Routes will vary from rocky mountain running to flat coastal roads and trails. Optional 12-week training package available from an experienced running coach to ensure you're trained and ready to go for this adventure of a lifetime!

Food

Located in the Alicante province, the traditional food of the Guadalest valley is an important part of the culture and history of the region. Restaurants in the region offer typical dishes such as “pilotes de dacsa”, as well as combine traditional cuisine with a modern twist.

Food and beverages available from the local markets and grocery stores are extremely affordable and delicious. Traditional Spanish food such as paella, jamón ibérico, and famed wine from the Rioja region are also available.

Accomodation

At a comfortable Spanish villa set in the mountains overlooking the sea, you'll have access to a sun terrace, lounge chairs, a self-catering kitchen, and a washer and dryer. Double accommodation is included. A single supplement option is also available. Please see pricing for more information.

Location

We'll be based in a mediterranean hillside village between Aitana and Xortà mountain ranges. Our village was built on a pinnacle, which offers some amazing views of the mountains and coast. The charming sun-bleached villas and shops in town offer a chance to sample local restaurants and culture, but it is the landscape that truly dominates this spectacular region of the Costa Blanca. Our home base is perfectly situated between the top trail running locations in Spain, and the sea is just 30 minutes away for afternoon adventures.

Flights

You can find affordable international flights into our meeting location of Alicante Airport. We've found incredibly cheap flights during this time frame into nearby Barcelona, which is a quick flight or train ride away. We recommend checking out Skyscanner for the latest deals.

I had a wonderful trip! The Dolomites were the perfect location for a trail running vacation, and Liz picked a wonderful route for us! The refugios were fantastic, comfortable lodging with great food and drink. I would highly recommend this trip!

Hands down the best vacation I've ever taken. The Dolomites were spectacular, and Liz did a great job ensuring people of all abilities had a wonderful time. The group was the perfect size - and we all got along great! The food at the Refugios was great and the wine and company was even better. I absolutely loved this trip and would recommend it to anyone!

This trip was hands down the coolest and most awesome thing I have ever done. Liz Gill is a rockstar. I couldn't have imagined a better guide to lead this trip of a lifetime. The breathtaking beauty of the Dolomites cannot be properly captured by photographs which means you must go and see it for yourself! There is no one better than Liz Gill to take you!

It was a really good trip. 'Liz did a really good job at organizing everything and making sure everybody was comfortable and safe. She hired a guide for the slower runners/hikers and did a good job

I'm still riding a high from this trip. I'm so thankful for our organizer, Liz, who is a logistical genius. Because everything was planned and ready to go long before we began our trek, I was able to be entirely present for the duration of our journey. When you're hiking or running through the Dolomites and staying in unique, culture-rich refugios every night, the ability to "take it all in" is of utmost importance. In addition to gaining new perspectives on both culture and adventure, I gained something much more valuable--a new appreciation for the beauty of friendship and community. You just can't put a price on that!
