Located southwest of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Tongo Reef is one of San Cristóbal’s best-known surf spots. The area features three sections of left-breaking waves, offering different possibilities depending on sea conditions, swell, and the surfer’s experience level.

🏄 Tongo Reef

Tongo Reef is characterized by a series of left-breaking waves formed along the volcanic coastline.

Depending on ocean conditions, the different sections can offer opportunities for surfers with varying levels of experience. Your surfing area and point of entry will be selected according to sea conditions, your comfort level, and your surfing ability.

San Cristóbal receives southern and south-southwest swells throughout different periods of the year, making the island an exciting destination for travelers interested in surfing.

The experience is not only about catching waves. Being in the water at Tongo Reef also means enjoying one of the most dramatic natural settings around Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

🌊 Access to the Surf Spot

Depending on the conditions and the passenger’s preference, access to Tongo Reef may vary.

One option involves entering from the beach and approaching the surf area on foot before paddling toward the breaking waves.

Another access point offers an easier entry closer to the surf zone, with an area similar to a small rocky platform or pier from which surfers can enter the water and begin paddling toward the break.

There is also a small beach area surrounded by volcanic rocks.

The most suitable access will be selected according to comfort, ability, sea conditions, and safety.

🦭 Surfing Surrounded by Galápagos Wildlife

One of the most remarkable aspects of surfing in Galápagos is the natural environment surrounding you.

Depending on wildlife activity and ocean conditions, you may encounter or observe:

• Blue-footed boobies

• Pelicans

• Frigatebirds

• Lava lizards

• Other coastal and marine wildlife

Sea lions are frequently associated with the coastal waters around San Cristóbal and may occasionally appear near surfers.

All wildlife is completely wild and free-ranging. Sightings and encounters cannot be guaranteed.

The surroundings of Tongo Reef also provide an opportunity to appreciate mangroves, native vegetation, volcanic rock formations, and the coastal ecosystems of San Cristóbal.

The contrast between the Pacific Ocean, dark volcanic terrain, and Galápagos wildlife creates excellent opportunities for photography and filming before, during, or after the surfing experience.
