There is no place on Earth like Svalbard in the spring.
Here, in the High Arctic, the long polar night has just lifted, revealing a world reborn in snow and silence. Ice-choked fjords, wind-swept plateaus, and glacial peaks stretch toward the horizon, still cloaked in winter’s grip. And with the return of the light comes the return of life—Arctic foxes on the hunt, reindeer picking their way through thawing ground, king eiders in breeding plumage, and polar bears patrolling the sea ice.
Join Reefs to Rockies on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to this raw and remote archipelago. In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we’re inviting just 12 guests to experience Svalbard as few ever will—aboard a classic small expedition vessel designed for adventure, not the crowds. This is experiential luxury in the truest sense: breathtaking wildlife encounters, dramatic landscapes, and intimate exploration at the edge of the world.
This journey is timed to coincide with the Arctic spring—when snow still covers the land, sea ice glitters in pastel light, and the wildlife is most active and visible against a pristine white canvas. Whether you’re here to photograph, observe, or simply take it all in, each moment promises something rare and unforgettable.
With no fixed itinerary, our days are dictated by the whims of nature—not by a schedule. Our guides and ship crew make the most of every opportunity to get you up close to the Arctic’s wonders, whether by Zodiac, on shore, or from the viewing decks.
And because this is a small-group expedition, you won’t be jostling for space or waiting your turn to see the sights—this is your Arctic, wide open.
Piet van den Bemd: Piet is a professional photographer, polar guide, and true Arctic soul, spending more than 280 days a year in the field. His photos have appeared in scientific journals, documentaries, and conservation campaigns—but it’s his enthusiasm and adventurous spirit that guests remember most. Piet’s teaching style is hands-on and fun, blending technical skill with a passion for storytelling and spontaneity. He’s not just here to help you take better photos; he’s here to help you see the Arctic in a whole new way.
Sheridan Samano: Co-founder of Reefs to Rockies and lead biologist guide, Sheridan brings decades of experience exploring wild places and connecting travelers to the natural world. With degrees in wildlife and fisheries science and biology, Sheridan is a passionate advocate for conservation and immersive, small-group travel. Her sharp eye in the field and instinct for finding wildlife in surprising places mean you’ll likely hear a lot of “How did she see that?!” moments. Whether it’s spotting a camouflaged Arctic fox or sharing stories over dinner, Sheridan’s presence helps make this a true Reefs to Rockies experience.
MV Freya is a true expedition vessel, with the highest ice class rating (1A) and the ability to venture far into Svalbard’s frozen wilderness. Originally built as a lighthouse tender, Freya combines rugged capability with surprising comfort, including spacious cabins, multiple observation decks, and even a sauna and hot tub—perfect for unwinding after a day of Arctic exploration. An open bridge policy means you’re welcome to join the crew up front and witness navigation in real time—another way to stay fully immersed in the journey.
From Freya, we’ll launch Zodiacs to reach remote shorelines, get closer to wildlife, and explore glacier fronts up close. With two Zodiacs and just 12 guests, everyone gets a front-row seat to the Arctic.
Over the course of eight days (May 17-24, 2026), we’ll sail deep into the Svalbard archipelago, guided by light, ice, and instinct. Our route may include iconic locations like Alkhornet, Poolepynten (home to a walrus colony), and the ice edge—prime territory for polar bear sightings. Historic trappers’ cabins, cultural sites from centuries past, and glacier-lined fjords like Magdalenefjorden and Lilliehöökbreen offer both natural and cultural context to our journey.
Each day brings new opportunities for wildlife viewing, Zodiac cruising, possible shore landings, and quiet moments to reflect on the magnitude of this remote, magnificent landscape.
