About your trip

Your day begins in Kisarawe town with a guided visit to the vibrant local market where you’ll learn how to choose ingredients like coconut, cassava, spices, green bananas, and fresh fish. You'll then head to a humble Zaramo homestead and take part in a hands-on Swahili cooking session in a traditional kitchen—grinding spices with mortar and pestle, cooking over firewood, and learning the secrets behind dishes like pilau, maandazi, kachumbari, and coconut curry.

As the food simmers, explore the neighborhood, meet community members, and learn about Zaramo traditions, storytelling, gender roles, homestead structures, and local crafts. After the cooking session, enjoy a hearty meal together with the host family. This immersive tour offers a taste of Swahili hospitality and the rich heritage of Kisarawe's Zaramo community.
