There is something truly remarkable about the mass hunting of wildebeest during the Great Migration between late January and early March. Within weeks, most wildebeest give up their young in a synchronized birth that makes the southern Serengeti plains more than 400,000. It is estimated that 8,000 wildebeest are born per day, or 300 per hour! While lions, cheetahs, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs certainly prey on these swaddled wildebeest, synchronized calving is an effective survival mechanism for the species: simply there is too much food to consume for the predators. Wildebeest are concentrated in the southern Serengeti plain, the Ndutu area and the northern area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). They are attracted to the abundant fresh grass of the fertile plains and the calcium in the soil, which is essential for growth and is passed on to calves through breast milk. From late January to mid-March, more than 80% of breeding female wildebeest will release their young within a few weeks. More than 400,000 tiny wildebeest dot the plains and predators swoop in for easy prey. Wildebeest still occupy the southern part of Serengeti National Park, but are preparing to move north as the plains dry up
