Wildebeest's massive migration Calvin season safari from late January to early March is truly noteworthy. Within a few weeks, most female wildebeests drop calves in a synchronized birth that fills the southern plains of Serengeti with more than 400,000 young people. It is estimated that 8,000 wildebeests are born per day, or 300 wildebeests per hour. Synchronized calves are an effective survival mechanism for species while lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs feast on these lean wildebeests. There is just too much food for predators. Wildebeests are concentrated in the southern part of the Serengeti Plain, the Nutu Mountains, and the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). They are attracted to the abundant fresh grass in the fertile plains and the calcium in the soil. It is essential for growth and is passed to the calf through the mother's milk. From late January to mid-March, more than 80% of fertile female wildebeests give birth within a few weeks. With over 400,000 small wildebeests lined up on the plains, predators rush to eat simple prey. Wildebeests still live in the southern part of Serengeti National Park, but are preparing to move north when the plains are depleted.
