This hīkoi, led by a local Māori tribal guide, takes you from early settlement by our ancestors, to the arrival of the missionary Rev Brown and colonial settlers. Tauranga has a history of amazing stories. Our local guide will transport you back in time to expertly guide you through to what makes Tauranga what it is today.

To begin our walk you are transported back in time to the arrival of our Māori ancestors to Aotearoa from our ancient homeland, Hawaiiki.

Settlement conflict

We visit the site of an ancient pā (fortified village) which saw inter-tribal conflict which eventually became the final resting place of colonial soldiers from conflicts with our local tribes during 1864

A place of great significance in the history of Tauranga. Your guide will take you through these beautiful grounds that witnessed so many important events that helped shape Tauranga

Taumata Kahawai Pā

Location of the armed constabulary

Taumatakahawai Pā(Māori fortified village) became a redoubt established by the colonial forces. From here you can view the city including The Strand and the historic Clarence House
