Situated in the center of the Western Mediterranean, Mallorca belongs to the Balearic archipelago and is a paradise with spectacular mountains.
Serra de Tramuntana, the main mountain range on Mallorca, crosses the island from NE to SW and covers 63,084 hectares (almost 30% of Mallorca’s total area), has a length of 90 km and a width that varies between 15 and 20 km, and there are 54 peaks with heights above thousand meters. Most of these 54 peaks are concentrated in the central part of Tramuntana. They are barren and rocky.
All 54 thousand can be hiked without extreme difficulty, except two of them: (1) Puig Major, the highest peak of Serra de Tramuntana, which is officially a military zone, and (2) Agulla des Frare summit, at 1,205m can be climbed only using climbing gear such as ropes and harnesses.
Although the 54 thousand can be hiked in daily tours without great difficulty, it is important to remember that they are not part of the signposted routes, like GR-221 and other coastal walks. The hikes require good orientation skills and a good level of fitness and agility to enjoy the challenge of climbing the highest peaks of Mallorca.
Ticking off all the 54 peaks above 1000 meters should be on every mountain lover’s list.
