Workshop Travel Requirements

Pre-Departure Zoom Meetings:

Once the workshop begins to fill up, Greg will hold an Initial Meet and Greet Zoom meeting to allow for introductions. Greg will review many aspects of the trip to ensure you are fully prepared for the workshop. International travel is not difficult, but you do need to have an understanding of the various requirements that can trip you up.

MEDICAL RELATED:

Health Conditions:  If you have a physiological condition that could create an issue for a roommate, please contact us or consider the single room upgrade. These trips are fatiguing, and everyone needs a good nights sleep.

Immunizations: We suggest that you review CDC Recommendations at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/tanzania

** Regarding the CDC, we suggest using some practical thinking. Depending on your overall health and previous immunizations, you certainly may not need all that they suggest.

Antibiotics: Past workshop participants have consulted with their personal physician and brought a 10-day prescription for a general antibiotic in the unlikely event they become sick. Others have also brought Ivermectin in the event of COVID-19 exposure.

Imodium: We suggest you bring Imodium in case you need it. All water is filtered and served out of a carafe. There is also plenty of bottled water in our tents for drinking and brushing our teeth.

While treating diarrhea can help alleviate symptoms, acute diarrhea, usually lasting one or two days, resolves on its own.  Diarrhea lasting more than two days may be a sign of a serious condition. Chronic diarrhea lasts at least four weeks, and symptoms may be continual or may come and go. Diarrhea of any duration may cause dehydration. By treating diarrhea quickly, you can start to feel better again and get on with your day.

CPAP: If you require a CPAP, please contact us for additional information. The Bush Camps do have adequate power via generators, but there is always the potential that these could go down. Some companies have miniature CPAP devices with battery backup, so that may be an easier travel option.

TRAVEL SPECIFIC:

1. We Highly Recommend using Delta and KLM for your flights/connections to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). Please refer to Trip Exclusions under pricing.

2. You will need a Visa from Tanzania. Start working on this immediately. You can apply for your E-Visa at this website:

https://visa.immigration.go.tz/

3. Before traveling requirements:

https://tanzania-eservices.org/arrivals-international/?gad_source=1

4. Visa Guidelines:

https://visa.immigration.go.tz/guidelines

5. Use of Credit Cards while on Photo Safari: We suggest that you use "CASH" to the greatest extent possible. You will have a couple of opportunities for limited shopping. Some items, such as Jade or Tanzanite carvings, can be quite expensive. It is just safer in terms of potential Credit Card theft to use cash. Also, you will require cash for tips or miscellaneous items.

Designed as a buffer to mitigate against delayed or canceled flights, today is at leisure to also recover from the long flight over and adjust to the change in time zone.

Note: There is no need to arrive a day early, as this day is ours to rest and relax or walk about the property.

This morning, you’ll have the chance to meet your lead Safari Guide before your adventure starts. This exclusive 1–2-hour question-and-answer session offers unmatched access to an expert with decades of experience in northern Tanzanian parks, who deeply understands wildlife behavior, habitats, and photographers’ needs. Discover how his exceptional spotting skills, knowledge of where to find animals—especially elusive big cats—and expertise in lighting, vehicle positioning, distance, and angles will enhance your safari experiences and photography opportunities.

This afternoon, enjoy a photo workshop hosted by your tour leader and photo expert Greg Johnson.

Fall asleep tonight knowing that the splendors of the world’s top national parks await you. For wildlife photographers, the northern Tanzania circuit is undoubtedly one of the best locations on Earth for wildlife photography. The quality of light, the density of subjects, the diversity of habitats, and the dramatic scale of the landscapes all come together to create photographic conditions that professional wildlife photographers return to year after year, decade after decade. But great safari photography isn’t just about being in the right place. It’s about being in the right place at the right time, at the right angle, with the right light—and staying there long enough for something extraordinary to happen. A private vehicle, guided by our expert-rated private guide, who thinks photographically as well as ecologically, provides all of this. He’s not just a driver familiar with the parks; he’s an expert spotter, naturalist, tracker, storyteller, and strategist—someone who has spent decades immersed in these ecosystems and possesses personal knowledge that no guidebook captures and no briefing can fully convey. Combine this with vehicle positioning optimized to enhance light quality; engine off to ensure complete stability at critical moments; precise distance and angle to eliminate distracting backgrounds; and generous, unhurried time that allows the subject to move, behave, and fully reveal itself to your camera lens. These elements come together to create a unique experience and an unrivaled photographic journey.

NOTE: We highly recommend booking flights through Delta and KLM, routing through Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro (JRO). This ensures we all arrive at the same time.

NOTE: There is no need to arrive early. We have a built-in day to relax in our itinerary. Additionally (see what is not included), there may be no rooms or meals available before 2:00 pm on the day of arrival. Any transfers before this would, if available, be an additional cost.

Day 3 Todays Adventure

Day 3 Todays Adventure image

Ngorongoro Crater with overnight at Lions Paw: www.karibucamps.com

Today’s Adventure: Arusha / Ngorongoro Crater with overnight at Lions Paw: www.karibucamps.com

After an early breakfast, depart from Arusha with your dedicated, expert-rated guide and private vehicle. Our destination is the famous Ngorongoro Crater: the scenic 3.5-hour drive takes you along the winding Rift Valley Escarpment with sparkling soda lakes below and lively little market towns. The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Tanzania, is the world’s largest intact, inactive volcanic caldera, formed 2–3 million years ago. Spanning roughly 100 sq miles and reaching depths of 2,000 feet, it is a premier safari destination known for its high-density "Big Five" wildlife population, including the rare black rhino.

After stopping at the Loadare Gate to process your access permits, proceed to the rim road with a stop at the viewpoint for your first view of this ancient volcanic caldera before descending into the world's largest intact, unbroken, and unflooded caldera. It is called Africa’s "Garden of Eden" because of its diverse environments and abundant wildlife. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the most extraordinary spots in the world — the 8th Wonder of the World! What a perfect location for your first safari lunch!

Populations of around 25,000 to 30,000 large animals inhabit the crater, including the highest density of both lions and hyenas in Africa. An impressive 55 different mammal species have been recorded here, along with over 400 bird species, ensuring spectacular wildlife viewing on your own terms. Stay as long as you like at each sighting, waiting for the perfect moment. After lunch, continue exploring the crater: in addition to herds of zebras, gazelles, elands, and wildebeest, you'll find a variety of other predators, such as servals, caracals, and jackals. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliable places in Africa to see the Big Five—rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo—in a single game drive. And that isn't just marketing talk; it's simple geography. In this enclosed ecosystem, with the right guide, these encounters happen naturally.

The crater's lion prides are large, well-studied, and very comfortable around vehicles, often seen in the open grassland where there's nowhere to hide and plenty to observe. In fact, the rare Black-maned lions are among the crater's stars—famous for their dark, striking manes that often reach knee level. The bull elephants that inhabit the crater have some of the largest tusks in Africa, thanks to the mineral-rich soils and grasses. The hyena clans, which in Ngorongoro are often the top predators rather than just scavengers, as commonly thought, frequently clash with lions. Additionally, the area is home to both white rhino and the critically endangered black rhino living wild and side by side—while black rhinos are more secretive and prefer forest cover, white rhinos thrive in the open grasslands, greatly increasing your chances of capturing great photos.

In the late afternoon, we'll go to Lion's Paw Camp, which lets us be among the last vehicles to leave the crater and among the first to return in the morning. Compared to others, Drive On Photography guests usually enjoy an hour or more of extra time in both the morning and afternoon, which is vital for excellent game viewing without the crowds and for capturing scenes during the golden hour. We focus on strategic itinerary planning and camp placement to maximize your wildlife viewing and the value of your safari dollars.

Day 4-5 & 6 Serengeti

Day 4-5 & 6 Serengeti image

Serengeti (3 overnights) at Woodlands Camp www.karibucamps.com

Seringeti National Park

Enjoy one more early game drive before leaving the crater and heading to the unmatched Serengeti National Park, passing Olduvai Gorge, "The Cradle of Mankind,” en route. We’ll then stray from the usual path, passing Laetoli - one of the most important paleoanthropological sites on Earth and the discovery site of 3.6-million-year-old fossilized hominin footprints. In this area of ancient windswept plains and volcanic hills, we’ll visit a Maasai village set far from typical routes and other safari vehicles. Life here continues much as it has for generations, with Maasai coexisting with wildlife — photograph warriors dressed in vivid red shuka, intricate beaded earrings and necklaces, herders guiding cattle across open grasslands, and traditional earthen bomas emitting smoke and filled with color, culture, and daily pastoral life. After our visit, we’ll keep driving through this remote and scenic landscape, enjoying a picnic lunch overlooking the rolling countryside somewhere along the way. Then, it’s on to our highlight — the southern Serengeti. Each year between January and March, vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle gather on the nutrient-rich short grass plains, transforming the area into one of the most extraordinary wildlife photography destinations on Earth… and we have three days to fully experience this remarkable region.

The landscapes around Ndutu, Lake Masek, and Naabi Hill—the focal points of our game drives over the next three days—become the primary calving grounds of the Great Migration. This concentration of prey attracts extraordinary numbers of predators, creating one of the highest wildlife densities anywhere in Africa. In addition to the 1.5 million adult wildebeest, over a six to eight-week period—peaking in mid-February—approximately 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day. Nowhere else in Africa will you find such a staggering density of prey animals. 300,000 Zebras accompany the migrating herds, and with zebra calving peaking in January, there will be thousands of these tiny striped beauties waiting to have their photographs taken. And Drive On Photography will put you in the epicenter of the vast herds of the Great Migration.

The southern plains support remarkably high densities of big cats, with established lion prides living in Ndutu, Lake Masek, and Naabi. Cheetahs thrive on the short-grass plains, where they can be seen hunting gazelle and wildebeest calves, while leopards are generally found near kopjes and acacia groves. Other predator species in the area include black-backed jackals, serval cats, bat-eared foxes, and spotted hyenas—highly skilled apex hunters that often travel up to 18 miles a day from their dens to the calving grounds. Beyond the Great Migration, look out for elephants, giraffes, warthogs, various antelope species, buffalo, hippos, and more.

For wildlife photographers, this is a season of constant action, dramatic predator encounters, and exceptional lighting. However, it is the rarely found combination of key ingredients like expert guides, unlimited daily game drives with no mileage or fuel caps, unrestricted game drives (within allowed areas and times), sunrise to sunset game drives with a picnic lunch to maximize time in Africa’s top park, and strategically located camps near wildlife gatherings that allows DRIVE ON PHOTOGRAPHY to deliver an unmatched experience for our photo clients.

More about the game drive areas and the Drive On Photography value await you.

Game drive destinations are plentiful from Woodlands Camp: based on wildlife reports and your guide’s advice, they might include Ndutu, Lake Masek, and Hidden Valley, among others. Here’s a quick overview of what each destination offers you:

The surroundings of Ndutu have been a favorite for scientists, biologists like Jane Goodall, and professional filmmakers and photographers like Hugo Van Lawick for decades. This is because of the area’s high number of territorial predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, civets, servals, wild cats, and caracals. Hidden Valley is another hotspot for wildlife, with lions, zebras, gazelles, jackals, and warthogs often visiting. Large clans of hyenas can sometimes be seen patrolling the shores and wallowing in the shallow waters. Lake Masek, a hidden gem, often hosts large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra, but receives fewer vehicles, making it ideal for exclusive wildlife viewing and peaceful photography. Then there are the broad short-grass plains of Matiti, favored by female herds during the Great Migration, which create one of the highest-biomass areas in Africa. However, reaching this special off-the-beaten-path destination, also known for good chances to see cheetahs in action, requires an operator that offers unlimited mileage and unrestricted game drives… and that is Drive on Photography Photo Safaris!

Besides the superior quality of its guidance, one of the key differences between Drive On Photography and others is that we offer unrestricted access to both ecosystems—the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. These two neighboring landscapes together form the heart of the southern calving grounds of the Great Migration. During calving season, large herds of wildebeest graze across these short-grass plains, which extend seamlessly between the two protected areas. However, administratively, they are managed separately, and each area requires its own permit from Drive On Photography for vehicle access.

To reduce expenses, almost all safari operators only hold permits for one of these areas at a time. Since the migration and the predators that follow it constantly move across these invisible boundaries, this restriction can significantly limit where guides can go game-driving. Park authorities monitor these boundaries closely, and operators caught crossing into an area without the correct permit face hefty fines—meaning guides must turn back just as wildlife activity may be happening beyond the boundary.

Our Drive On Photography safaris eliminate this limitation entirely. By holding permits for both ecosystems, your Drive On Photography private guide can effortlessly follow the natural movements of the plains—tracking migration herds, cheetah families, and lion prides wherever new wildlife activity emerges. This flexibility is further supported by our unlimited mileage policy and vehicles that are never restricted by fuel allowances. These benefits of Drive On Photography allow our guides to focus on wildlife behavior and your photography opportunities above all else. For photographers, the outcome is clear but impactful: more sightings, longer encounters, and the ability to carefully position for the best light,

behavior, and composition without restrictions—an unmatched advantage during one of Africa’s most vibrant wildlife displays.

In summary, always keep your camera and extra memory cards ready because wildlife sightings during your 3-night stay at Woodlands Camp will be incredible.

Day 7 South Serengeti

Day 7 South Serengeti image

Overnights at Sametu Camp www.karibucamps.com

After an early breakfast, we begin our game drive northwest toward the legendary Gol Kopjes, a remote cluster of granite outcrops rising dramatically from the endless grasslands.

The Gol Kopjes are regarded by Serengeti experts as the highest-density habitat for free-roaming cheetahs in the world. This is due to ecological perfection: during the green season, large numbers of Thomson’s gazelles migrate onto these short-grass plains, following the fresh grazing prompted by seasonal rains. These gazelles are the primary prey for cheetahs, and their presence attracts the world’s fastest land predator in large numbers. On a typical day in this area, it is not uncommon to see female cheetahs with cubs watching from termite mounds, coalition males patrolling their territories, and high-speed chases unfolding across the open plains.

The landscape adds another layer. The kopjes—ancient granite outcrops shaped by wind and time—stand like islands in the sea of grass. These formations provide shade, denning sites, and high vantage points for predators scanning the plains below. Lions often rest atop the rocks, while gazelles graze in the surrounding grasslands. For photographers, the Gol Kopjes offer something rare: clear horizons, striking granite formations, and some of the most consistent cheetah sightings in Africa.

Few safari companies routinely include game drives through the Gol Kopjes because of the need for special permits and higher operational costs. Drive On Photography is one of the few that can obtain these permits, giving our clients the best chance to photograph cheetahs in this unique habitat. Our safaris are flexible—offering unlimited mileage, no fuel caps, and sunrise-to-sunset game drives—allowing us to track cheetahs over large areas and spend as much time as needed to capture the perfect shot. Along with our expert guiding standards, these factors make a significant difference for dedicated wildlife photographers.

As the afternoon fades, we’ll continue our game drive to Sametu Camp. The Sametu area of the Serengeti is a big cat photographer’s dream, offering one of the richest and most dynamic environments in East Africa for observing and capturing lions, cheetahs, leopards, and other predators. The area is not only home to big cats but also hosts a variety of other iconic wildlife. Elephants are frequent visitors to the Sametu Marsh, while giraffes are commonly seen browsing the acacia trees around the Sametu Kopjes. Their elegant poses, combined with the dramatic landscape, make them excellent subjects for wide-angle shots. For those seeking smaller, more elusive predators, the caracal and serval are occasionally spotted. These solitary cats are nocturnal by nature, but with a little luck, photographers often catch them in the early hours of the morning or at dusk as they move through the tall grasses. Both species add a unique element to the region’s diverse predator mix.

Day 8 East Serengeti

Day 8 East Serengeti image

Sametu Camp www.karibucamps.com

Flexibility is one of our key strengths, and we can customize today's game drive to match your preferences. While The Gol Kopjes allows us to focus on cheetahs, and the Sametu environment is known for lions, a visit to nearby Namiri Plains offers the chance to spend the entire day immersed in an area that is home to both lions and cheetahs—and to photograph them in their natural habitat. Why choose Namiri? For over twenty years, this area was closed to tourism and reserved for cheetah research, protecting one of the most significant cheetah populations in East Africa. When it reopened to visitors in 2014, the benefits of that protection to Drive On Photography became immediately obvious. The plains now support healthy cheetah populations alongside thriving lion territories. Along with the Gol Kopjes, Namiri is considered one of Africa's premier spots for cheetah photography. The open terrain allows these swift hunters to chase in daylight, often offering extended views of stalking and chasing—rare opportunities for wildlife photographers. With our clients' photography interests in mind, we will stay in the field as long as lighting, wildlife activity, and park hours permit. By day’s end, you’ll have captured some of the most intimate and exciting moments of Serengeti big cats, all thanks to the expert guidance, flexibility, and access provided by our Drive On Photography team.

Alternatively, after your time immersed in the predator-rich Sametu/Namiri ecosystems, we might consider a full day in the Seronera River Valley (SRV), which offers photographers a different and equally compelling perspective. The Seronera ecosystem is often seen as the heartbeat of the Serengeti: with permanent water, riverine forests, and open savanna coming together to attract species from both environments, it becomes one of the most wildlife-dense areas in Africa. Besides giraffes, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, a variety of antelope and gazelle, black-backed jackals, bat-eared foxes, vervet monkeys, and olive baboons, photographers can encounter a remarkable array of other species. For example, the Retima Hippo Pool hosts over 200 lively hippos packed into the deep waters, while enormous Nile crocodiles rest motionless along the banks. For photographers, the interactions among hippos, crocodiles, and the dramatic riverbank scenery offer endless opportunities for striking compositions.

With Drive On Photography known for delivering Big Cat sightings to our clients, it would be a missed opportunity not to mention that the SRV is one of the few places in Africa where tree-climbing lions are regularly seen by our clients, offering unique photographic moments. Additionally, the SRV boasts one of the highest scientifically recorded densities of leopards in Africa: With your Drive On Photography guides’ exceptional spotting skills, photographers often find leopards draped across thick branches or descending gracefully from the tall boughs of the acacia and sausage trees lining the Seronera River.

With DRIVE ON PHOTOGRAPHY and our expert guides, private vehicles, unlimited mileage, and the freedom to stay with wildlife as long as the moment unfolds, a day in the SRV becomes an immersive photographic experience in one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife settings.

Day 9 Central Serengeti

Day 9 Central Serengeti image

Arusha/Kili Seasons Hotel Day Room/ https://kiliseasons.com/

Enjoy one last early morning game drive as you make your way to the Seronera airstrip. Have your camera ready, though, as the Central Serengeti abounds with wildlife.

The flight departs around 11:10, and while flight paths may vary from day to day, expect to see the shimmering waters of the Seronera River, the lush plains of the central Serengeti, and the wildlife-filled caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater from above. Fly over the Rift Valley and the dry Maasai steppe with its ancient soda lakes, often dotted pink with flamingos, before arriving at Arusha Regional Airport around 12:30, depending on bush stops along the way.

Upon arriving in Arusha, a Drive On Photography driver and vehicle will be ready to transfer you to the Arusha Coffee Lodge for a Jikoni lunch: the term "Jikoni" means "kitchen" in Swahili, and the lunch is crafted to resemble an authentic outdoor African kitchen that showcases traditional Swahili and Tanzanian flavors. The menu includes regional favorites such as Nyama Choma (grilled meats), Ugali (the local maize-based staple), Kachumbari (a fresh tomato and onion salad), and traditional stews, often with coconut-based vegetable or bean curries. Weather permitting, it is served in the lodge’s lush gardens under the shade of evergreen coffee trees, and since the lodge is situated on one of Tanzania's largest coffee estates, the meal often ends with a fresh cup of Estate Coffee.

When you’re ready, we’ll take you back to Kili Seasons Hotel, with time to freshen up and relax in your day room (a regular room reserved for a portion of the day rather than overnight).

Dinner will be fairly early, followed by a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) for your return flight back to the USA.
