About your trip

The rich history of encounters between individuals from Germany and people of African descent prior to World War I has gone largely unnoticed in the historical literature, because Germany became a nation and engaged in colonialism much later than other European nations and became known for the Holocaust, with the exclusion of Black suffering or faces.

This trip explores the intersections of Black, German, and Jewish history in Germany. During this cultural transformation journey, you will learn the history of Germans' perceptions of Black people, Blackness, and the Jewish community during the Holocaust to present day. You will learn about a variety of Black–German encounters, including depictions of Black saints in religious medieval art, Black Hessians fighting in the American Revolutionary War, Cameroonian children receiving an education in Germany, and African American agriculturalists in Germany's protectorate of Togoland.

This trip offers the opportunity for you to experience the Black Diaspora culture in Germany through food, historical tours, community events, and interactive workshops. You will find pleasure in giving back, learning, unwinding, transforming, and connecting with like-minded people.
