On August 2, 2027, the moon is going to swallow the sun whole over Luxor for more than six minutes. That is the longest totality on accessible land until 2114. Unless you have a very aggressive longevity plan, this is your one shot.
We'll watch it together on Luxor's West Bank, surrounded by temples built by a civilization that worshipped the sun. When the sky goes dark at midday and the horizon glows gold in every direction, we'll hold ceremony before, during, and after totality. We'll set intentions for what you're done carrying and what you're ready to burn down, and then let the dark do its work. Surya in India and Ra in Egypt were both sun gods, worshipped on opposite sides of the ancient world. That afternoon, we salute them both.
The journey there is its own pilgrimage. We're chartering an entire private dahabiya, a traditional Nile sailing boat, and sailing slowly from Aswan to Luxor, stopping at the temples ancient Egypt built to honor the sun. An expert archaeologist guides us through every site.
We'll visit Philae, the island temple of Isis. We'll stand before Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II built a temple for his queen Nefertari, one of the few great temples dedicated to a woman. We'll walk the terraces of Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh and had herself carved with the royal beard, because power recognizes power. The morning after the eclipse, we'll end at Dendera, the Temple of Hathor, beneath its famous zodiac ceiling. The women of this story have been written out long enough, and on this trip we read them back in.
It's August in Upper Egypt, so it's hot. Average highs in Luxor run around 106°F, with lows around 80°F, and Aswan runs just as hot. The trade-off is a sky that stays clear almost every day, which is exactly what you want on eclipse day. We plan each day around the heat: temple visits early in the morning, practice in the cooler hours, and midday for shade, air conditioning, naps, and cold drinks on deck. Totality peaks around 1:05 PM, with the sun nearly overhead, so we'll have a shaded viewing spot ready. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, loose linen, a refillable water bottle, and electrolytes.
Yoga and meditation are woven through the week, timed around the heat and the temples, so the practice meets you wherever the journey is.
