Feminary founder, Joanne Frederick, is a human by birth and a therapist by training. She teaches meditation and yoga through a trauma-informed lens. While on a SHE RECOVERS® retreat with a group of fabulous women in Mexico in November 2022, she set an intention to create The Feminary®: a community for women recovering and practicing the art and science of mythical feminine connection. She is thrilled beyond words and deeply grateful for the opportunity to co-host these retreats with the co-founder of SHE RECOVERS®, Dawn Nickel.

The Feminary Retreat was magnificent! Seven heavenly days and nights of relaxing, eating good food, laughing, crying, and bonding with other women in recovery, all against the beautiful backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. I got everything I wanted out of this experience and more!

Some experiences stay with you. They shift something inside, recalibrating the pace of your thinking, the way you hold a moment, the things you begin to notice for the first time and again. The Feminary Retreat was one such experience for me, a beautiful and restorative week that I will carry with me for a long time. From the moment I arrived, grumpy tired and sweaty after a long journey from Ireland, I was taken such exquisite care of. I was welcomed with warmth and immediately enveloped in care, every detail had been thoughtfully considered. The retreat venue itself is stunning with generous and comfortable spaces surrounded everywhere by beautiful nature. The food was exceptional: fresh, nourishing and clearly prepared with love. Being so thoughtfully catered for felt like a real gift, and actually became an important part of the experience for me. This is down to the team who looked after us, they were remarkable - warm, attentive and deeply professional - creating an atmosphere that felt both supportive and completely relaxed. The retreat created real space to slow down, reclaim rest, and reconnect with ourselves and with one another. Each morning began with grounding yoga sessions, beautifully guided. I also took part in a traditional healing ceremony, long walks along the beaches, and a day trip by boat to a nearby island. I had some of the best massages ever. In between the adventures, I read books by the pool, watched birds glide overhead and let the warmth of the sun do its deep work. Sometimes I swam. Sometimes I snoozed. I chatted and laughed (a lot). What stayed with me most, though, were the people I met. The Feminary Retreat seems to attract my favourite sort of humans, clever, thoughtful, brave, curious, kind, honest and extraordinary women. It creates something many of us rarely receive: real space for rest and connection, with nature, with one another, and with ourselves. It was a restorative, joyful and deeply nourishing experience. I left feeling rested, connected and incredibly grateful to have been part of it. Thanks Jo, Dawn & Taryn xoxo

Everything about the retreat was perfection—the villa, the food, the yoga, the beach, and the incredible group of women who gathered there. The programming offered exactly what I needed: the chance to slow down, reconnect, and return home feeling grounded, refreshed, and ready to step back into my busy life with a renewed sense of well-being. Jo, Dawn, and Taryn created such a warm and welcoming space—one that felt safe enough to follow whatever my heart and intuition were calling for. The women I shared the week with felt like they were meant to be there, each one reflecting something back to me that my soul had been quietly asking for. We arrived as strangers and somehow left feeling like we’d known each other for years. I came home feeling renewed and deeply grateful… and with a sore stomach from laughing so much. Truly the best medicine for the soul. Thank you to everyone who made it so special.

This trip nourished me in a way I desperately needed. It was incredible to be cared for the entire week. I appreciated the excellent communication, particularly on my day of arrival as I navigated the airport and transfers. It was lovely to have all the meals made for us, and they were delicious! There was ample time to relax, and no pressure to participate. A highlight for me was the amazing yoga each morning after sunrise. It was a beautiful way to start the day! The sharing circles were deeply healing and connecting. The only negative was the beds and pillows. The mattress was incredibly hard and the pillows very flat and old. Bedding was stained and very thin.

The feminary retreat was just what my mind, body and soul needed. Jo, Dawn and staff covered all the bases of nurturing our bodies with delicious food, yoga and the offering of massages under the canopy of majestic palms and birdsong. The magical connections with fellow beach walkers are memories I’ll cherish. Thank you Jo, Dawn and the lovely staff of The Feminary Retreat. XO Robyn Witherell
