      About this trip

“Run along the way laid out above with the unspeakable sweetness of love”

      – From the Rule of St. Benedict, c. 540 AD, translated by Owen Ó Súilleabháin

      An Ancient Pilgrim Path

We gather together in a beautiful rural setting, on the banks of the River Fergus, near Clarecastle in Co. Clare. You reside within the renovated walls of an 18th century garrison, the surrounding lands once held by the indigenous King of Thomond, and subsequently the de Clare family.

It is within this ancient Gaelic kingdom of Thomond where our voyage will unfold as we venture to places of holy pilgrimage both ancient and contemporary. Given the moniker “the Golden Vale” because of its fertile and lush agricultural, it is the perfect setting for our journey which will in no doubt inspire your own contemplations beyond the “Golden Veil”.

      The Daily Round

Each morning we gather for a session of song, story, poetry and myth, opening us up for a day of exploration through the ancient and holy lands of the surroundings. This lived and shared experience of the Celtic imagination can fortify us and nourish us with a renewed sense of grounded and generous soulfulness.

Each day, we walk the pilgrim path to ancient sites and places of stunning natural beauty. The walking will not be strenuous, but on one or two occasions, we will lead a longer walk — to be followed by a warm, hearty supper and the nourishment of Irish music.

      Nourishing Body & Soul

All the makings for a hearty self-prepared breakfast are provided daily. We share an abundant lunch and dinner each day, except for two or three meals when you will explore an Irish town and its offerings. You will be lavished by Ireland’s organic and indigenous ingredients! At certain feasts, we will learn about the artisan food culture from those leading the culinary resurgence in Ireland.

      Secluded Historic Residence

We stay in a lovingly renovated home which was originally a soldier’s barracks dating back as far as 1778. This wonderful secluded accommodation is situated alongside the River Fergus and the ruins of a castle dating to the Middle Ages. We will occupy the three houses present; Thomond House, Castle House and the Coach House which are all situated around a Courtyard with access to a beautiful walled garden to the rear. Here we will create a circle of friendship, gathering in the kitchen, around an oak-wood table and wood-burning stove, or in the gardens when the sun blesses us with its presence.

This is tourism as it should be – where your attention and open ear is as much a gift to the landscape as the riches you receive in return. Turas d'Anam is an invitation from a family and a welcoming community, walking the landscape and encountering the genius of the soul and soil of Ireland.

This trip for me was a visit and exploration of my heritage - my maternal grandmother was born and raised in Glen, county Limerick. The adventures to sacred spots, healing wells, burial grounds really touched my heart and made the culture of this part of Ireland come alive for me. Added to that was the knowledge, history and music of Owen, Micheal and Noirin... Their voices and command of Gaelic stole my heart. We would arrive at a spot and were instructed to treat the place as sacred ground and as I paid attention to my surrounding the three of them would sing and I was transported to a place deep in my soul that connected me to the earth and to those who lived here before me. Thank you...

I have traveled to 51 countries both on my own as well as a part of various group travel experiences, and the Golden Vale - Journey to the Heart of Ireland is the one nearest and dearest to my heart. This is a very special opportunity for individuals seeking to learn more about themselves through personal and powerful exposure to the wonderful Irish heritage, culture, and natural beauty of the Emerald Isle. You will be treated to amazing music, soul-stirring poetry , and stories offered in a very personal and visceral way, and will leave Ireland forever changed and deeply appreciative of the entire Ó Súilleabháin family and their clan of like-minded seekers. This trip was a unique, curated feast of Irish experiences with opportunity to immerse in the culture, landscape and spirit of Ireland. The make up of a wide variety of group participants created an alchemy in which participants were able to converse, share and learn from each other in a safe and supported environment. Group leaders Noirin ni Riain, Owen and Micheal O'Suilleabhain along with a supporting cast including Hugo O'Byrne and Cathal O'Neill embodied generosity of spirit and Irish hospitality insuring we were well looked after. The accommodations at The Barracks of Clare Castle were five star and meals by chef Damian were delicious. Experiences with a private tour of Glenstal Abbey and Irish artist Richard Hearns felt so very special, even magical. Attention to detail such as the delivery of fresh bread from a local bakery for breakfast and music and poetry offerings in our morning gatherings were the "cherry on top" of this one of a kind adventure of "soul friends." The investment is worth every penny and those who say "yes" won't regret this unforgettable journey.

What an enchanting and enriching experience this was. For anyone remotely partial to Irish music, poetry, mythology, history, fine food, good company and travelling through breathtaking landscape in the west of Ireland, this tour should be close to the top of any dream list. Owen and Micheal O Suilleabhain, together with their extraordinary mother Noirin, managed to weave together a week of unforgettable moments ... as well as deliver a timely reminder that magic still exists. Thank you

This is definitely not the usual commercial tour. Rather, this was a unique, genuine, and uplifting experience. I and my fellow travelers participated in song, instrumental music, poetry, Irish history and spirituality, Celtic and pagan customs, hiking to ancient ruins and standing stones, and group meals with good food. The trip leaders, Nòirín ní Riain and her sons Eoin and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, lived and were trained in the arts and culture of the region. They are master singers of ancient and traditional ballads, Gregorian chants, and liturgical music. They are also poets and beguiling story tellers. Because of them, this was an authentic exposure to everything Irish. The two other assistants, Hugo Byrne and Cathal O'Neill, were also artisans and practitioners of conscious living. The small group of people who were on the tour were a delightful collection of travelers of all sorts --not a rotten egg among them. I think the nature of this tour naturally appeals to the good souls who appreciate art, history, and humanity. If you are such a person, you should join this tour. I recommend coming a day or two early to stay in Limerick. It will give you time to slot into the time zone and tour this pretty city.
