The Northern Lights in Fairbanks, Alaska: A Detailed Guide
The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. These luminous, dancing waves of light grace the night sky with vibrant hues of green, yellow, pink, blue, and violet, creating an ethereal display that captivates all who witness it. Fairbanks, Alaska, is one of the best places on Earth to experience this incredible phenomenon due to its location within the auroral zone, clear skies, and low light pollution.
The aurora borealis occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun, traveling at speeds of up to 45 million mph, collide with the Earth's atmosphere. The Earth’s magnetic field protects us by redirecting these particles toward the poles, where they interact with atmospheric gases to create the brilliant, fluorescent displays we see in the night sky.
Fairbanks is uniquely situated within the auroral zone, the ring-shaped area about 1,550 miles around the magnetic north pole where auroras are most frequent and vivid. This makes it one of the top destinations in the world for aurora viewing.
Key Advantages of Fairbanks:
While the Northern Lights occur year-round, they are only visible in the dark sky. The best times to visit Fairbanks for aurora viewing are:
Though seeing the aurora borealis is never guaranteed, here are tips to improve your odds:
The aurora is unpredictable and can vary in intensity and duration.
Fun Fact: Many first-time viewers mistake dim auroras for ordinary clouds. A good camera or phone with long-exposure settings can help capture the lights in greater detail.
Q: What are my odds of seeing the aurora in Fairbanks?
A: With clear skies, Fairbanks offers about a 90% chance of seeing the aurora over a 3-night stay.
Q: Do I need special equipment to see the aurora?
A: No special equipment is required—just your eyes. However, a camera with manual settings can capture details invisible to the naked eye.
Q: What time of night is best for viewing?
A: The best time to watch is between 10 PM and 2 AM, though auroras can occur any time during the night.
Q: How do I stay warm while viewing?
A: Dress in layers, wear insulated boots, and bring hand warmers. Many viewing locations, like the Aurora Borealis Lodge, allow you to step indoors to warm up between viewings.
While the Northern Lights are a significant draw, Fairbanks offers much more. Explore the beauty of Alaska’s wilderness, enjoy local hot springs, and immerse yourself in the culture and hospitality of this unique region. Remember, even if the aurora eludes you, the journey itself is unforgettable.

Aurora Borealis Lodge - FAQ Sheet
Q: What are my odds of seeing the aurora borealis?
A: Two primary factors determine if you’ll see the aurora: weather and solar activity. Even with significant aurora activity, a completely cloudy sky can obscure the view. Conversely, clear skies without aurora activity mean no lights. Weather is usually the more important determinant. From our location on Cleary Summit, you have about a 90% chance of seeing some form of aurora on a clear or partly clear night.
Q: Do I need to be on top of a mountain or hill to see the Northern Lights?
A: No, but you do need to be away from city lights and in a location with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky. While hilltops like Cleary Summit or Murphy Dome are ideal, other open locations such as lakes (Chena Lakes, Olnes Pond, Tanana Lakes) or fields (Creamer’s Field, Dog Musher’s Hall) work well too. Avoid densely wooded areas that block the sky.
Q: How far are you from Fairbanks?
A: The lodge is located 20 miles northeast of downtown Fairbanks, about a 30-minute drive. The Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), located on the west side of town, is about 26 miles away (approximately a 40-minute drive).
Q: What is provided in the kitchen?

Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska!
Your Northern Lights adventure begins in the heart of Alaska!
Most flights into Fairbanks arrive late at night or in the early hours of the morning. The primary airline carriers are Delta and Alaska Airlines. Delta's flight arrives at 12:13 AM on January 23rd. Although the retreat officially begins on January 22nd, flights typically arrive late at night, and check-in at the lodge is not available until after 4 PM.
For your arrival, plan accordingly: If your retreat begins on January 22nd, your flight should arrive in the afternoon of the 22nd or the early morning of the 23rd. Arriving too early—such as at 1 AM on January 22nd—would mean waiting a long time before the retreat begins that evening.
If you’d like to extend your stay by booking an additional night before or after the retreat, we’d be happy to assist with those arrangements.
Upon arrival, Amy Walker will personally greet you at the airport with a Walker Wellness Retreats sign in the arrivals hall. From there, you'll be taken to a nearby grocery store to pick up snacks and drinks for your room. We will then make the 30-minute drive up the mountain to settle in and get ready for our search for the northern lights!
Tonight, the Northern Lights await! From the comfort of your room, with its north-facing window, you can relax and watch for the aurora to appear. Optimal viewing is typically between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Radios are provided in each room to communicate with others when the lights are spotted.
Important Notes:
Lodging: Aurora Borealis Lodge Nestled in Cleary Summit, this lodge is designed for aurora viewing. It offers cozy accommodations, private kitchens, and large windows facing north to maximize your chances of seeing the lights.
