About this trip

Accomplished and admired yoga globetrotter Gernot Huber at last brings the self-empowering teachings that he’s been sharing in Asia and Europe to our tranquil Big Sky oasis. There are yoga asana teachers, yoga anatomy teachers, and yoga philosophy teachers. With clarity, sensitivity, and humor, Gernot integrates all three disciplines to expand your knowledge of each, as well as the interconnections between all three, to arrive at a more profound and accurate understanding of our true nature.

Gernot skillfully fuses asana instruction with core meditative concepts, enabling students to enhance the mental as well as the physical benefits of their practice. Consciously or not, we tend to regard body and mind as separate entities, a misunderstanding of reality that short-circuits one of our most accessible tools for transforming the mind: the ability to consciously direct the body in ways that change the way the mind works. This gifted international teacher translates his comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience into instructions that reveal intricate connections between movement, breath, and alignment on the one hand, and mental processes on the other.

Discovering how patterns of movement and breath can either support or sabotage mindfulness builds proficiency in countless ways that redound to your benefit on and off the mat. Emphasizing awareness and serenity, Gernot employs meticulous and accessible cues to maximize positive effects on your peripheral and central nervous systems from your physical practice. Under his skillful guidance, you’ll learn and practice patterns that disrupt negative feedback loops and reliably favor healthier, positive ones. In addition to helping you make your yoga practice more mindful and thus more beneficial, Gernot will also offer practical tips for increasing your mindfulness off the mat, such as turning daily chores into mindfulness practices and keeping technology from locking you into puppy mind.

Drawing on a broad spectrum of life experiences that range from working in Silicon Valley and volunteering for nonprofits to traveling on all six continents and teaching wildlife monitoring to inner city youth, Gernot relates with natural ease to students from every walk of life. We invite you to embrace this opportunity to study in our intimate, nature-drenched Ranch setting with a skilled and experienced teacher who conveys the concepts of yoga with such welcome playfulness and refreshing precision. This workshop program is appropriate for yoga practitioners of all levels.

Summer Vacation Tip

Extend your time in peace and beauty while savoring Western hospitality by exploring the great West’s national park treasures either before or after your Feathered Pipe experience with Gernot. Glacier National Park is a scenic 3.5 hour drive north and west of the Ranch, while Yellowstone is just a 4.5 hours drive south and east of the Ranch through some of the prettiest Western territory you’ll ever see.

About Gernot Huber

Gernot has been practicing and studying yoga since 1996, when a co-worker at his Silicon Valley startup offered to teach him Ashtanga vinyasa and pranayama in the spare conference room during lunch breaks. When he quit high tech two years later and took a career counseling class to figure out what to do with the rest of his life, he clearly remembers thinking “Perhaps I should be a yoga teacher”, only to immediately dismiss the idea as preposterous: “You are too lazy, too fat, and not athletic enough to teach yoga!” It took another 10 years, a traumatic breakup, and the stress of being in grad school at Cornell University to make him realize that yoga was no longer optional in his life. He defended his thesis on the correlation between wing shape and migration distance in swallows in April 2009 and in June 2009 completed his yoga teacher training. He has been teaching yoga full time ever since.

His yoga background includes Anusara, Iyengar, Forrest, Kripalu, and Ashtanga Yoga. His main influences include Erich Schiffmann, Richard Freeman, Desiree Rumbaugh, Ana Forrest, Roger Cole, Doug Keller, Carlos Pomeda, and Richard Miller. Born in South Africa and raised in Germany, Gernot has spent over 20 years in the United States and is now based in Thailand, while teaching workshops and retreats in Asia, Europe, and now the US. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University and a master’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University.

In his teachings, Gernot draws on a broad range of life experiences that includes working in Silicon Valley, traveling extensively in Asia and South America, volunteering for anti-globalization and alternative-transit nonprofits, making salads in a restaurant in San Francisco and baking pies for a café in Chiang Mai, conducting biological fieldwork in California’s Sierra Nevada and Argentina’s Pampa, and teaching wildlife monitoring to inner city youth. He loves cooking, eating, bicycling, and wilderness travel, and practices monkey acro yoga with his two young sons.
