About this trip

In spite of a worldwide interest in Japanese Buddhism, Japan remains a country largely inaccessible to those who do not speak the language, and the variety of sects and traditions can feel overwhelming and confusing – even to people who were born and raised here! Nevertheless, whether walking through the densest parts of Tokyo, hiking Japan’s famous mountaintops, or staying as a guest in a Japanese home, you’ll encounter temples, shrines, and altars, a testament to the rich spiritual history of this island country. From tea ceremony to Japanese landscape gardening, from the aesthetic of simple stained-wood architecture to the practice of calligraphy, the hand of Buddhist teaching is evident in numerous facets of Japanese life. Allow our multilingual guides to introduce you to the quiet, everyday practice of Zen, to the famous vegan “purification cuisine” of Shingon on Mt. Koya, and to the open-hearted, all-welcoming joy of Pure Land Buddhism.

Itinerary

Nikko and Tokyo
Day 1-4
Travelers will be greeted at the airport on October 2nd and guided to the hotel. For the first full day in Japan, we will begin with a cleansing and relaxing visit to Nikko, about an hour outside of Tokyo, where shrines, temples, and ancient carvings are tucked away into cool, moss-covered forests and surrounded by Japan's colorful red maples. After returning to Tokyo in the evening, the following two days will include visits to important spiritual sites in Tokyo including Sensoji and Meiji Jingu, as well as some free time to explore this fascinating city.
