About this trip

** Scroll down this page to view the complete, day by day, itinerary**

Immerse yourself in Guatemalan history, culture, and culinary delights as you dine with locals, visit artisans and entrepreneurs and attend the amazing Holy Week activities.

Semana Santa is considered one of the most colorful celebrations in all of the Americas with processions and vigils scheduled throughout the 40 days of Lent. However, none are as beautiful and magical as those in Antigua, Guatemala, the lovely colonial city just one hour from the capital of Guatemala. The processions fill the streets of Antigua, passing over-elaborate "alfombras" made of flower petals, fruits, vegetables, and colored sawdust at all hours of the day and night.

During our time in Guatemala, we will observe traditions and celebrations in both La Antigua Guatemala and on the famous Lake Atitlán. Not only does this trip give you a deeper insight into the history behind Guatemala's most celebrated holiday, but we will also immerse you in the multiple versions of "everyday life" that are common here. Our tour focuses on small business and entrepreneurship in Guatemala and is designed to support local artists, artisans, chefs, mixologists, farmers, and business owners!

Be a part of this tradition that has gone on for centuries as we observe respectfully and participate when invited!

Day One
Welcome to Guatemala

Participants will be flying in from a variety of different places to Guatemala City’s airport. That being said, we encourage participants to book flights that arrive in the morning or early afternoon so that they have time to get settled before the welcome dinner that evening. If you need assistance booking your international airfare please let us know!

Upon arriving at the airport, your Heart of Travel Tour Leader will be waiting to escort you to the beautiful colonial town of La Antigua via private shuttle (1-hour drive, without traffic, 1.5 - 2 hours with). Once in La Antigua, you will be checked into your hotel and given a brief orientation of the city. In the event, you arrive early in the morning and would like to coordinate any specific activities during the day just let us know so we can accommodate your requests.

We’ll enjoy a traditional Guatemala meal and learn how to make tortillas during an interactive dining experience at our friend Joaquín’s cooking school just outside of La Antigua. We will hang out in the rooftop kitchen and dine on the terrace. This is a great opportunity to meet your guides and fellow travelers and to discuss the upcoming activities for our adventure here in Guatemala.

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

One of the best cooking classes I've ever done! The Heart of Travel + Cuscun Team catered the meals to be veggie friendly for us so we were able to try traditional Guatemalan food with a veggie twist - which is difficult to find in the country. The views, atmosphere, outdoor rooftop kitchen, and mainly the company was incredible. Felt like we were getting together with old friends, having some drinks, and making a meal together. Learned a lot and 100% recommend this! Antigua highlight for sure!

10/10 recommend. Incredible pre & post communication from the Heart of Travel team which also included some Guate recs; which I loved! Specifically, the book & film recommendations to learn from before arriving. The airport transfer was seamless, Luis Miguel was there on time, easy to find, and great! Can't wait to do more experiences with them during my trip!

From my very first contact with her, Chelsea impressed me with her professionalism. responsiveness, and enthusiasm for ethical and sustainable exploration in Guatemala. She provided me with two itinerary proposals for a family visit to Guatemala in July 2021 and then tailored the one we chose to our family's needs and preferences. We opted to stay within a limited area to minimize in-country travel time and give us a few days to relax on Lake Atitlan. Our family of 4 (me, my husband, and our 2 boys, ages 13 and 18) enjoyed our trip immensely. The destinations and accommodations Chelsea booked for us were all excellent, and -- even more importantly -- the guides and local partners she chose were all outstanding. I'm a nervous passenger, and our drivers navigated both the traffic of Guatemala City and the winding mountain roads of the Highlands with equal calm and competence. Our guide Selvyn was unfailingly kind, patient, and knowledgeable (also a good, safe driver). A highlight was our visits to producers and artisans -- from Don Jose, the coffee grower outside of Antigua, and Joaquin, who gave us a cooking lesson on our first night (a do-not-miss experience), to the home cooks and textile artists in the Highlands and in San Juan on Lake Atitlan, everyone we met taught us something new and showed us something beautiful, moving, or delicious. At all of our accommodations, Chelsea had made all necessary arrangements, and our rooms met or exceeded our expectations. Chelsea was also an invaluable aid when it came to getting things like tipping and other local details right. She also arranged for covid testing on the eve of our departure; basically, she provided all the support we needed to ensure that our visit to her adopted home would be smooth and safe without feeling like we were just parachuting in for some R & R. After our eleven days in Antigua, the Highlands, and Atitlan, I hope to get back to Guatemala and Central America soon. When and if we do, Chelsea at Heart of travel will be the first person I'll contact.

I can't say enough about our custom trip to Guatemala. We changed our itinerary a few times before we even traveled and Chelsea was fantastic about all of our modifications. All of the information that we received prior to travel was amazing and had us very prepared when we arrived. Once we got there, everything was just as expected. All of the places chosen were beautiful, the local guides we had were the absolute best and our experience was nothing short of amazing. Given that we decided to go in June, during rainy season and the rainiest month of the year, we expected to have some potential weather issues. We were incredibly lucky to have great weather for the majority of the trip. However, for the one issue we did have, we asked to re-route our trip due to a weather issue and Chelsea and our fantastic local guide Selvyn made all of the changes for us last minute. We never would have known that we decided to take a completely different itinerary for 2 days if we hadn't requested them because everything went so smoothly. We learned so much about the country and the culture from Selvyn, saw everything we asked to see plus some, and truly enjoyed every moment we were there. They are truly the best and I wouldn't travel with anyone else if you go to Guatemala.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 11-day/10-night trip to Guatemala and highly recommend Heart of Travel. The itinerary Chelsea planned for me was perfect. The pricing was very reasonable. Her communication and support before and during the trip was exceptional. She went above and beyond in helping me solve a couple of SNAFU’s of my own making. I look forward to traveling again with this company in the hopefully not too distant future. I consider myself a well-traveled (104 countries), fairly adventurous, 61-year-old. My previous trips have ranged from completely self-planned to high-end travel companies, solo to small group. I seek unique, authentic experiences. Probably more so than most travelers my age, I enjoy being active and even physically challenged. However, like most travelers my age, I have become old and spoiled and place great value in a good night’s sleep in a comfortable bed in a safe environment.
