About your trip

A Science Trip for the Ages!

GREAT TRIP FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES! SOLD OUT.

Born from volcanoes, Socorro is one of four islands that make up the Revillagigedo Archipelago. They sit in a unique geographical location that attracts some of the most mesmerizing marine life in the world. From giant manta rays, 10+ shark species, dolphins, to the occasional whale. Experience Socorro with us and discover why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dream dive destination for divers around the world.

The word “SHARK” often conjures images of a ruthless and terrifying killing machine demonized in popular media. However, Dr. James Sulikowski, Director of Oregon State University’s Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES) and a Professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences (FWCS), is working to change this narrative. His ground breaking research is pioneering new scientific approaches that focus on studying “sharks as moms,” The complex and interdependent nature of  current and emerging challenges facing shark moms requires an integrated approach that puts innovations in science and education into action. As mother sharks travel the ocean, their journey to find a safe place (nursery grounds) to give birth is filled with perils from commercial fishing, to urbanization, to warming waters driven by climate change. If we cannot identify critical habitats and protect these mothers and their babies, there will be profound and generational impacts felt by humanity and the planet.

Dr. Mauricio Hoyos Padilla is a renowned marine biologist specializing in shark research and conservation. He is the Director and Co-founder of Pelagios Kakunjá, a nonprofit organization dedicated to studying the movement patterns, habitat, and behavior of pelagic sharks and other marine species.

Dr. Hoyos has been studying sharks since 1998, focusing on areas such as nursery grounds, reproduction, and movement patterns. His research has taken him to various locations, including Guadalupe Island, the Gulf of California, and the Revillagigedo Archipelago in Mexico, as well as international sites like Cocos Island in Costa Rica and Malpelo in Colombia.

In addition to his role at Pelagios Kakunjá, Dr. Hoyos collaborates with Attached Marine Research and Conservation. These expeditions aim to conduct research on shark populations and promote their conservation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hoyos has been involved in outreach and education, delivering numerous talks to audiences ranging from elementary school children to university students. He has also serves as a scientific advisor for documentaries produced by international networks such as National Geographic and Discovery Channel.
