Giant Tortoises, Volcanic Trails & Galápagos’ Ultimate Bird Sanctuary

The Natural Galapaguera & Punta Pitt Tour is one of San Cristóbal’s most immersive full-day wildlife experiences, combining the search for giant tortoises in a natural environment, volcanic hiking, exceptional birdwatching, and snorkeling.

This adventure takes you through two very different ecosystems: first, the natural habitat of the endemic San Cristóbal Giant Tortoise, and later to Punta Pitt, one of the most remarkable seabird nesting areas in the Galápagos.

It is an excellent experience for active travelers who want to explore San Cristóbal beyond its most visited sites and dedicate a full day to wildlife, landscapes, and nature.

🐢 Natural Galapaguera

The first part of the adventure takes you to the Natural Galapaguera, a protected natural area where the endemic San Cristóbal Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidis chathamensis) lives and moves freely within its natural habitat.

Unlike visiting a breeding center, this experience involves walking through the natural environment in search of giant tortoises.

Because the tortoises are completely free-ranging, they may be found in different areas depending on weather, vegetation, season, and natural animal movement. This makes the experience more adventurous and authentic, but also means that tortoise sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Along the trail, you may also observe native vegetation and wildlife such as:

• Palo Santo trees

• Matazarno

• Manzanillo

• Darwin’s finches

• San Cristóbal mockingbirds

• Lava lizards

• Other native flora and fauna

The Galapaguera portion requires extended walking through a natural environment and should be considered a physically demanding activity.

🌋 Punta Pitt

The adventure continues to Punta Pitt, located on the northeastern tip of San Cristóbal Island.

After arriving at its distinctive green-sand beach, naturally colored by the mineral olivine, you will begin a guided hike of approximately 1.5 kilometers through volcanic terrain toward impressive panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Punta Pitt is especially famous as the only visitor site in the Galápagos where the three species of boobies can be found nesting in the same area:

• Blue-footed Booby

• Nazca Booby

• Red-footed Booby

The combination of volcanic scenery, panoramic viewpoints, and remarkable birdlife makes Punta Pitt one of San Cristóbal’s most rewarding destinations for birdwatchers and photographers.

🤿 Snorkeling at Pitt Islet

After the hike, the experience continues with snorkeling around Pitt Islet.

The snorkeling experience offers a wonderful contrast to the terrestrial wildlife and volcanic landscapes explored earlier in the day.

Please note: This is a physically demanding full-day tour designed for travelers who are comfortable with extended walking and outdoor activity. The visit to Galapaguera involves hiking through a natural area in search of Galápagos giant tortoises, so sightings depend entirely on wildlife activity and cannot be guaranteed. If you prefer a less demanding option, you may choose to skip the Galapaguera hike and enjoy only the guided hike at Punta Pitt, followed by snorkeling near the islet.

The itinerary and activities are subject to Galápagos National Park regulations, weather conditions, sea conditions, trail conditions, and the instructions of the naturalist guide.

This tour is confirmed with a minimum of 3 passengers.

If the minimum number has not yet been reached, you may choose to secure the departure by covering the cost of the remaining spaces. If additional travelers later book those spaces, the corresponding amount paid for those spaces will be refunded to you.
