About this trip

This tour leads us to the small fishermen village La Boquilla and we highly recommend it for nature lovers.

On the beach of La Boquilla, we will see two very different facets of the city, since this is one of the poorest parts of Cartagena but 5 star hotels and luxurious apartments are built here.

After arriving in La Boquilla (about 30 minutes from the city center), we will get on our canoe and cross the mangrove forest and the lagoon Ciénaga de Juan Polo. We go through some natural mangrove tunnels (Tunnel of Friendship, Love and Luck). At the lagoon, we will see fishermen working. The perfect word for describing this gorgeous scenario is peace. The mangrove forest offers great flora and fauna. Among other things, we may see different species of birds and if we are lucky we might see a coon or a green parrot may appear on the riverbanks.

After the canoe tour, we will receive a cold coconut. Then, we will walk a bit through the village and along the beach whereas our guide will tell us more about the daily life of the people that live mainly of fishing.

We will get to a restaurant, where we can have lunch and try the typical local dish: fried fish with coconut rice, plantain and salad. After lunch, we can take a dip in the Caribbean Sea or relax on the beach.

Trips are about unique experiences, and my most recent trip to Cartagena with Alternative Travel was not only that but also unforgettable. The intrepid Josmary Palacio, our Asesora de Ventas, made much of my dreams come true as I was not only my group’s trip planner but, undesirably, also the birthday planner. For this role, Josmary was extremely accommodating to my questions and had a keen eye for planning out whatever I needed on our stay in Cartagena. One memorable experience was Alternative Travel’s Mangroves Tour experience, which is genuinely immersing and peaceful. Juan Lombana, our tour guide, is a bright young man who enjoys putting a smile on his groups’ faces. He was informative and charismatic, which helps to fully appreciate the mangroves, the people, and wildlife that play a vital role in this Caribbean ecosystem. My overall experience with Alternative Travel is an absolute 10, but I imagine that anyone that chooses to go with Alternative Travel will also feel the same way afterward. Enjoy!

It was very nice, the lunch was great, the personnel very kind and the place beautiful we left our personal things there safe... The only thing to improve is the departure time, it could be 8am instead of 9am, this way the tourist can enjoy more time and not having a tight itinerary in case there is another extra activity scheduled... Also the return time, but this is more dependant on the ocean waves and wind...
