About this trip

A unique exploration of Ireland's 'True North' in 5 days / 4 nights. One of our most popular tours and one of the few tours to focus exclusively on Northern Ireland and Donegal.

We at ‘Essential Ireland’ are passionate about including the beautiful and fascinating North of Ireland and Donegal in our tours. We highly recommend you visit!

Our tour-guests are fascinated by the story of Historic Derry, the beauty and legend of the Causeway, modern peaceful Belfast and its troubled past, the characters and the communities of this beautiful part of Ireland that only 25 years ago was a no-go zone for tourists and is now one of Europe’s top attractions.

On our Northern adventures we take pride into introducing you to the fun and endearing locals from both cultures and communities, the indigenous Irish community and Northern Ireland’s ethnic British culture.

We also venture into majestic Donegal, a remote magnificent corner of Ireland that is often overlooked by mainstream tours. Join us for a unique adventure!

Itinerary

DAY 1:
Dublin to Belfast (& Titanic Experience)

[9am] Depart central Dublin. We pick up in one central location (the Leonardo Hotel opposite Christchurch Cathedral)

[10.30ish] Our first stop is the historic, and usually unvisited, town of Drogheda. Destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. (You’ll be hearing a lot about him on this tour!)

Visit the elaborate Church of St. Peter that resembles a grand medieval Cathedral, maybe light a candle to invoke blessing on our travels and gaze in awe at the head of St. Oliver Plunkett (yes, his fully preserved head) who was hung, drawn and quartered in London in the year of Our Lord 1663 and whose head is preserved in an ornamental glass case beside the altar!

As a bonus, St. Peter's Church also displays a relic of the True Cross.

History buffs will really enjoy this.

[11am] free-time to maybe find yourself a Coffee and a wee cream-bun.

[11.30] Visit Monasterboice, ancient and glorious Monastic ruins deep in the serene countryside and lush farmland of County Louth. Learn of its majestic Round Tower and its famed Celtic-Christian High Crosses, the finest in Ireland. Your guide will help you recognise the messages and stories contained in the carvings.

This is a truly special archeological site.

[Early afternoon] Arrive in Belfast, the proud Northern capital. Everyone is free for lunch in the bustling city-centre.

[2pm] We’ll enjoy a short panoramic city tour and experience a good introduction to our temporary hometown for 2 nights.

[3pm]: The late afternoon is devoted to the epic Titanic Experience, voted the #1 visitor attraction in the world. (yes, the world!). You’ll be amazed at this state of the art visitor centre, no expense has been spared to bring to life the story of one of the most famous ships in history, built in Belfast 1912. We spend 2 hours at this brilliant attraction.

[5.30pm] Check into our central Belfast hotel. You'll be free for dinner in one of the many pubs and restaurants around our hotel, your 'Essential Ireland' guide will make plenty of recommendations.

Some of us might meet up in the famous Victorian  ‘Crown Saloon’, just maybe the most beautiful bar in the world!

This is one of the best tours I’ve taken. Stephen is the magic that makes this such a memorable vacation. Loved the Ashford Castle, the Hilltown Hotel in Dingle, Stephen’s staff , and of course the falconry. You also get to meet Seamus. If you go on the Essential Ireland website, you can find out who Seamus is. Great trip Stephen - thank you.

I enjoyed the tour and all the stops and hotels. The tour guide was informative. The only suggestion is if there were more time at the stops to enjoy the site, fir example the Cliff of Moyer.

Much enjoyed the tour, and the efforts of Essential Ireland to provide a great trip for my siblings and our spouses. Chris was a great guide, and we all enjoyed the tour. Essential Ireland takes great pride in providing a smaller group experience; we'd highly recommend.

The original itinerary and tour director for our Wild Atlantic trip unfortunately were changed. It was re-routed in reverse order, which impacted some of the logistics. The sites we visited were generally as promoted but several changes were made which I found disappointing, the greatest of which was substituting Stephen McPhelmy with another guide. The first day when Stephen did accompany us was excellent. Very interesting stops, much enriched with his professional expertise and insights and background knowledge. We did appreciate the small group size and the selection of places we toured. Several activities we were treated to were off the beaten path and arranged through Essential Ireland’s personal connections. The tour of the Dingle glass cutting factory, the private Irish music performance and the hands-on falconry demonstration were particularly special.

Many thanks for travelling with us Cheryl, it was a pleasure to welcome you and travel with you, thank you for your kind words and positive feedback regarding the "off the beaten path" Irish experiences that we are famous for like the historical insights and personal anecdotes, the private Irish music and Irish dancing evening and things like our School of Falconry. There is always a possibility of one of our tours going in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, as you mentioned every activity and site was still delivered, experienced and enjoyed, nothing was missed out on. We pride ourselves on that and also our 'never cancel a tour' guarantee. That being said I fully understand your point and I'm certain that in 2025 this tour '7 day Wild Atlantic Way' itinerary will always go in the clockwise direction (unless there is some unforeseen circumstance, like a major festival and we may have to go to Killarney first instead of Galway, this possibility is stated in our information, although we always do our utmost to avoid it in future and I'll endeavour to make guests aware of it much earlier in the unlikely event it needs to happen). In 2025 we hope to offer around 20 public tours for the season and I will maybe guide only a handful of them (God willing), its not possible for me to guide them all. I'll make sure this is clearer on our website. I'm a 48 year old Grandfather now and I've loved being on the road touring for 28 years but I will be slowing down a bit to spend time with my wee Grand-daughter, focus on my private tours and making our small-group, open-to-the-general-public-to-book 'Essential Ireland tours' even better. I've even officially retired from guiding tours for my good friend and mentor Rick Steves after 25 years, so I can free up some summer time in my calendar for important things like my wife, my children/grandchildren and my Irish wolfhounds :) My beloved brother Chris and all the other 'Essential Ireland' guides are all highly experienced tour-leaders and passionate Irish citizens and I'm 100% confident they'll guide our tours excellently if not available to guide that week. Best wishes to you and I really hope we will get to welcome you again in future. Is mise le meas ('from me to you with respect' in Irish Gaelic") Stephen McPhilemy

Traveling with Essential Ireland is like being a part of the family. Our tour guides/bus drivers were the McPhilemy brothers, Stephen and Chris. Their cousin, David McGinley, also participated by driving us one day from Derry to Dublin with a stop in Armagh to see St. Patrick’s Cathedral. All were great guides and kind people. The Northern Ireland trip was wonderful with great accommodations. We learned so much about the area and saw some very interesting sights. I really enjoyed traveling with a small number of people and Stephen was very flexible making it possible for us to join in the tour of Northern Ireland. We were well cared for, given some good pointers about what to do on our free time and being treated to a couple of meals unexpectedly was like the cherry on top!
