About your trip

This will be our first annual “Michigan in May” excursion on the Colonial Crafts!  This year, we are traveling between New York, Chicago, and Grand Rapids, Michigan.  In addition to visiting the Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan, you can go to a Cubs game,

visit the many museums and attractions Chicago has to offer, or take a day trip from Grand Rapids to many other sites around

Western Michigan.  In 2027, we plan to take the Colonial Crafts from Chicago to Detroit to visit Greenfield Village, the Ford Museum,

and the Motown Music Museum.  And in 2028, we will travel on the Amtrak “Blue Water” route to beautiful Port Huron,

the "Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes" including the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, the boyhood home of Thomas Edison,

and the gateway to Sarnia Ontario in Canada.

This trip begins in New York City where the Colonial Crafts will be coupled to the rear of Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited.  After enjoying the breathtaking scenery up the Hudson Valley, you will enjoy a full-course dinner on the history route of the 20th C Limited.  After a restful overnight sleep in your original Pullman bedroom, you will awaken to the smells of fresh brewed coffee, applewood smoked bacon on the griddle, and hearty thick slices of Railroad French Toast.  Once you arrive in Chicago, there is plenty to do.  Make your own lodging plans and plan to enjoy many of the fine restaurant offerings in Chicago.  The Cubs are playing at Wrigley Field Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, the Colonial Crafts will begin shuttling between Chicago and Grand Rapids on the rear of Amtrak’s

“Pere Marquette”.   You can buy one-way tickets to or from Grand Rapids, or you can save some money by purchasing a Round-Trip Package.   Your Round Trip Package can originate in Chicago for those who are staying there, or it can originate in Grand Rapids for folks from Michigan who want to visit Chicago.  The yearly Tulip Festival is a true sight to behold. See fields of tulips of multiple colors. Each Passenger should visit the Tulip Festival website and plan your own visit.   You must buy tickets for each event separately.  https://www.tuliptime.com/ Hotels in Grand Rapids have more availability and are less expensive than hotels in Holland.   You can either Uber or rent a car in Grand Rapids.  If you are a ticket holder on any of our trip segments, we would be happy to let you hitch a ride from Grand Rapids to Holland on our way to Chicago in the morning, and/or pick you up on our way back to Grand Rapids in the evening.

Explore the majestic scenery of Holland, Michigan, with windmills, wooden shoes, and traditional music and costumes, without having to travel across the seas to the Netherlands.  Grand Rapids is a city full of art and culture, awesome dining and nightlife, inspiring natural beauty and exhilarating community spirit. The very walkable downtown offers more than 90 restaurants, clubs, theaters, and museums. This city will surprise and delight you. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library is a must-see attraction.

While on the Pullman car, you will be served a first-class Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, snacks, and beverages all in historic luxury with personal care by our on-board servers.  Make your 2026 a year to remember with this once in a lifetime trip. You are able to tailor your trip however you like.  Ride Amtrak one way and take the Pullman car the other; fly to Chicago or Grand Rapids and meet us there to enjoy the journey through Western Michigan. Plan to stay as many or as few days as you like in the Holland/Grand Rapids area.  Your round-trip ticket is good for any combination of dates on the available shuttle trains between Grand Rapids and Chicago.

After enjoying your time away in Michigan, you can return East on the Colonial Crafts.  Our two-day trip leaves Chicago on Monday and arrives in New York City on Tuesday.  With your ticket, you have access to the Amtrak VIP lounges in both Chicago and New York prior to your journey and after you arrive.

Passengers who purchase tickets that involve an overnight segment will be assigned one of our four private bedrooms.  Each bedroom has an upper and lower berth and an attached private bathroom with a toilet and sink.  Our on-board staff make up each private room for day time travel with comfortable chairs and a table.  In the evening while you are at dinner, the chairs are folded away and the bunks are made up and turned down for your comfort.  If you do not have a traveling companion, we will assign another single passenger to share a room with you. If you are traveling by yourself and do not want to share a room, please purchase two tickets.  There is an all-stainless steel shower room at the end of the hallway available for use at any time.

About your organizer

We operate a historic railcar that's available for use throughout the United States. We offer scheduled and chartered vintage railcar experiences. The Colonial Crafts was built in 1949 for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a three double bedroom, one drawing room, buffet kitchen, lounge. We can sleep nine passengers and seat twenty in the lounge. Elvis rode the car in March 1960 from DC to Memphis after returning from military service overseas. He then rode the car out to Los Angeles a couple weeks later to shoot the picture G. I. Blues.
