AFTERNOON DISCOVERY OF THE CITY
In New Delhi, we will visit Raj Ghat, the memorial to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is a simple black marble platform marking the spot of his cremation on January 31, 1948. We will then drive past India Gate, a memorial built in 1931 to honor the Indian soldiers who died in World War I and the Afghan Wars. The names of these soldiers are inscribed on the walls of the monument.
Next, we will pass by the President's House, the official residence of the President of India, which was constructed in 1931. Originally known as Viceroy's House, it served as the residence of the Governor-General of British India until 1950.
We will also visit Humayun's Tomb, a magnificent memorial for Mughal Emperor Humayun, built in 1562. This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is noted as the first example of this style of Mughal architecture in India.
Finally, we will explore the Qutub Minar, constructed in 1206 by Qutub-ud-din Aibek. At 72 meters, it is the tallest brick minaret in the world and a significant example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The Qutub Minar and its surrounding monuments are also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
